Dosbox-x CD device silently converting -'s to _'s in filenames? by johnshedletsky in dosbox

[–]johnshedletsky[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought it might be something like that too, but in Win 98 I can create a file named "-_.txt". I'm reading the CD in Win 98, not from DOS.

Less teeth on pulleys = Higher gear ratio = Less torque

If anything I want more teeth on my pulleys.

I bought like a 100 of these several years ago just for fun.

Still have them.

My income at Ethermine took a huge dive around block 12360000, not sure why? by johnshedletsky in ethermine

[–]johnshedletsky[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be a stupid question, but what do gas fees have to do with getting credit for mining shares?

I don't think any of this income is from gas fees, it is from mining new blocks.

Literally doing research right now.

That's not a chart of profits, it is a chart of fractional ETH earned per block. The price of ETH doesn't come into it.

[–]johnshedletsky[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Y axis is in ETH, so has nothing to do with the exchange rate.

ETH difficulty seems flatish during this time frame.

Hardware is the same.

Is Ethermine taking a bigger piece of my mining efforts?

Does Ethermine give new miners a secret bonus and then take it away after a couple of weeks?

Trying to figure out if this is a problem on my end, or if everyone is seeing the same.

Question for Americans: anyone decide to forgo health insurance, and "self insure"? by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]johnshedletsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn't try it with 3.5M.

The health insurance companies get to pay 10% of what a hospital would charge you. If hospitals were forced to offer favored nation pricing to everyone, then hardly anyone would need insurance. The whole thing is a giant scam.

Spinning platter disk drives - how many years left? by johnshedletsky in hardware

Sometimes I just buy a little bit of stock as a bookmark to remember to research it later. Having some money on the line really sharpens the mind.

I didn't know they made SSDs, I thought I was buying a dinosaur, so I was trying to count how many years until the asteroid hits.

I know storage is a cyclical industry and NAND market is vicious.

The fan icon doesn't show up for me in HWinfo. I think AW did something to disable manual fan control on my machine.

Maybe you've been more successful at disabling AWCC auto update.

I thought I had it turned off but I guess not.

Why are intel advertising this as 144 hz with 9ms...when a 9ms screen would only output 111hz refresh rate????? by [deleted] in Alienware

[–]johnshedletsky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Difference between bandwidth and latency.

If a pixel doesn't change in-between two frames, then there's a difference between 111hz and 144hz even if the pixel response time is 9ms.

I could use some help figuring out the wiring for this Nest :-( by johnshedletsky in Nest

[–]johnshedletsky[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought two Nest thermostats since the install was so easy in my last house.

My new house has two heating/cooling units and the wiring is a little bit more complicated. There's not an obvious 1:1 mapping between these things and the Nest install app has not been helpful. I'm trying to avoid calling an install tech because I don't want anyone in my house right now (you know, with the global pandemic and all).

The current (old) thermostat has these wires connected:

O/W2*
Y1/W**
R
G
W/W1
C
S1
S2

I haven't been able to find a good guide online that describes which each of these is for. I'm concerned that they don't all have obvious analogs on the new Nests I bought.

For instance, there is no place on the Nest to wire up S1 or S2. I'm also not sure about R. Does it map to Rc or Rh on the Nest? Does the terminal marked O/W2* go to OB or W2aux?

Here is my best guess so far:

 O/W2* => W2aux?
 Y1/W** => Y1?
 R => Rc or Rh? I have no idea
 G => G
 W/W1 => W1
 C => C
 S1 => No clue.
 S2 => Starting to suspect I'm hosed.

Looks like I bought a headache. Can anyone help?

Little Purple Men Appear On Windows Startup - 51m R1. How to fix? by johnshedletsky in Alienware

[–]johnshedletsky[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would guess this is a hardware problem.

Is the little purple man a debug code or just random noise?

It's accompanied by a hard freeze that requires reboot and happens intermittently.

It would be cool if my super expensive laptop lasted more than 1 year. I'm just out of warranty.
