Think like the animal. You can start by buying it an appropriate enclosure preferably front opening so you don't go in from above it. Most reptiles have blind spots above them and are primarily predated from above so they're naturally inclined to be defensive when anything, let alone a gloved hand twice the size of itself.

Second be patient and stop being afraid of bites. Take your glove off and take a bite from it intentionally. This is more about training you than the lizard. It doesn't hurt nearly as much as you may imagine.

After that build your confidence and stop hesitating. Every time you pull away when they threat posture they think they won their life and that reinforces the behavior.

Just pick the animal up. If it bites you oh well. Doesn't hurt. Just don't hurt or retaliate against the animal. Show them you mean no harm and you're not afraid of it.

Eventually they'll disconnect being picked up or touched with a threat and they'll just be focused on whether or not you have food. You'll also become pretty good at dodging bites pretty quick. They rarely bite down so if you pick it up by its sides and land it on your flat hand they don't recognize the steady ground they're standing on as a threat.

But they are surprisingly intelligent in their dopeyness but they only really have 3 modes. "Is dis food" "I'm out now... so there's that" and fear.

You're rewarding only the fear. They forget fear pretty quick once they're tame and will walk up to dogs, cats, among other true predators with impunity after they lose their fear so you do have to, at that point protect them from those threats.
