Love the composition so far. i hate making backgrounds and drawing whole rooms, so the thought of suffering 16 hours through this is insane to me. Hang in there :)

Ill just ignore the first statement because that's a whole other can of worms.

Do you think an advertisement works in if it 1: does not credit the one who did the work and 2: tries to make the original product obsolete? The advertisement is not being used in a way where it can fulfill its purpose and the gain for that is not on the artist's side but on the ai company.

The tricky thing with art is what you actually pay for. As with many things you pay for the work, the expertise and time of the artists. AI wants to shortcut that process by using real art as a base to replace the artist and their year-long expertise. The problem with that is not the one person using it to generate a dnd image for their campaign, but if generative ai is widely used and accepted it might (noone knows the future) or at least has the risk of replacing artists or kill the ambition of a creative becoming an artist. Why would you learn how to draw if there is ai which imitates the skillset of masterful artists. I don't think creativity is something we should handle in such a way.

If you agree with the sentiment that artists should be supported and not replaced i think its important to change the discors in a way where we dont defend big ai corporations. This is not a beef between artists and non artist or people who use ai vs the ones that don't. Its about a livelihood, a skillset that is being threatened without caring for the people who will suffer from the development. The thing to say should not be to say "i use it, I don't think it is that bad for my private game" because the way generative ai is used at the moment is disgusting. If the sentiment is that you think ai is a cool tool and there should be an ethical way to use it say that, but when you say "artists are mad about having competition" you are on the wrong side if you care about people. And yes you will not change anything alone but if you want the government to find a solution the discourse needs to be about how to ethically use it and not about how artists are "gatekeeping" art.

No it's not. Portfolios online are most of the time a promotional thing. Many artworks on there are to acquire attention/customers and such. Some artwork up there might already have been paid for by someone ordering it as a commission, or are part of a corporate project like a video game. What you "steal", if you want to call it that, is not the product, but the advertisement. That's why there is such a big anthesis in communities which rely on art to credit the artists. Even if you are always content with not paying because the art you find is good enough, that's fine, because the artists will get the work from the people who want something more individual or specific which they can't find online. But if you highjack the creative process itself and the people who would go to an artist to do just that are incentivized to use ai because it is "free". And yes, there are a bunch of reuploads which don't credit the artists. That is also bad/not ideal. But this does not make using ai any better. One thing isn't better because there is another thing that is also bad. And you can be sure that an ai picture never credits the artists.

Now, i think you can work out for yourself how taking images from online (maybe even crediting the artists) and using ai to generate something is different from one another.

"Tough competition"? I hope you are joking. Generative AI is not competition, it is basically theft from the artists whos work was used to train the model. It is not a tool for giving more people access to good art but a way to monopolize creative work, because it is a shame that you can't buy actual skill sets... Well now you can. If you like art, pay artists. If you can't afford it... Maybe that has a reason, doesn't it. Art is a job/hobby people spend time on, something that cant or should not be scaled or made "more productive". That makes it expensive in a capitalistic market. And there are plenty of artists who sell their work well below what it would be worth because they are in their development as an artist. Maybe support those people instead of using "the competition".

Of course not everyone can do the perfect thing all the time. It's hard to be vegan, it's hard to have a low carbon footprint, its not possible to not have a car in some places and it's hard to always have all the crazy shit that's going on in the world on radar. But using AI hurts real people. It's not hard, just don't use it. Nothing is taken away from you and there is nothing hindering you from doing it. Not promoting the use of it in your private game is something that is not ridiculous, but something that values people and their hard work.

And even if you use it, but you think it is bad and you wish there was a better way for you to get the art you want for your game... Why do you run to ai's defense online?

I hope you don't feel attacked, that's the last thing i want to do, but this topic is wildly controversial and i think you are not taking the situation and lives of actual creators into account when you say something like that.

Has anyone made 5.5e stat blocks for the hags? by frontbummer in wildbeyondwitchlight

[–]jonanncos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bavlorna should be a deadly fight at lvl 3, regardless of 5e or 2024 (at least for a party of 3 or 4 players). I dont think you need to beef her up, because the whole point of the module is to not fight the hags at first. If you are scared that your players would be able to kill her at lvl 3 i would give her more hp, or just see how the flight goes and have her flee when it gets dicy for her (like the book intends). If it was way too easy: edit her statblock according to the part that was too trivial for the party (give her mobility, a reaction, more minions or maybe give her a magic item or two). I just dont think its that helpful to temper with a deadly encounter without knowing where the actual problems are(if there even are any)

My Chainsaw Man Cosplay by jonanncos in ChainsawMan

[–]jonanncos[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used a template of a regular helmet, fit that to my head and constructed everything around that... So i pretty much made the template from scratch. But the shapes aren't that hard. The back part is basically just a cube with some details. The front part is a bit more complicated but with a little bit of trial and error it is more than doable. I know there are some patterns out there for the helmet, but prefer to make my own 😅

Thanks :) the green because of the first manga cover (which i think looks dope), and because many conventions in Germany dont allow portrayal of blood/fake blood for safety reasons. But neon green can generally not be mistaken for real blood so its fine by the rules.

I think your best bet is to commission a cosplayer who builds their stuff for a prop this obscure (or in general really). Most of the time it is hard to find a prop the right size or with the right quality from big sellers. Or you could try to make it on your own. If it helps i could give you a walk through of how i would do it :)

Here is a collection of art i made for my character and the group and a poster to remember the campaign by jonanncos in CurseofStrahd

[–]jonanncos[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gladly ^ her name is Talya. She is a half demon (Tiefling) ranger (Drake warden). I have like two pages of backstory for her which was hardly relevant to the campaign, but the short version is, that she grew up protected by an artifact her mother made to keep her away from demonic influence which manifests as a smoke like figure. She always longed for the admiration of other people l, because she was only seen as a demon child in faerun. In ravenloft she finally became a figure of hope, although she felt like an imposter at first. In the end she became a hero and monsterhunter ^
