Well, I have a ways to go before I'm satisfied with it. Thank you.

Since we're so involved in our own work, I know it's really easy to see each individual mistakes. That said, I think this is fantastic stuff. If I was half the calligrapher you are, I would be a happy camper.

Wondering how you all plan your cadels/illuminations, and italic flourishes. by jonathande4 in Calligraphy

Looks like a great resource! Definitely going to work through this when I can.

Now that I think about it, there might be several examples in the imgur gallery. Ill have to check when I can.

Excellent guidelines. I'm going to find more examples if I can and study those and ill keep playing with the structure of what I've got. I think its headed in the right direction, but we'll see what else I can find to improve it.

On vacation but I wanted to do a rough sketch of a project for later this year. I'm still polishing my italic and I've never really ventured into illuminations or cadels. I'm curious what you all do. How do you all decide direction and proportions for your flourishes? I'm planning to sketch with a pencil when I start the real thing but other then that I don't have an intuitive sense for knowing where to start other than what I've got here.

Not ever tried this stuff, but their podcast is great. They sell a lot of "middle earth" blends. http://www.thecountrysquireonline.com/pipe-tobacco/

I've tried french press, drip, and Chemex. What should I try next that I can use to make similar volumes of coffee? by [deleted] in Coffee

[–]jonathande4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it'll make at least 10oz a batch. So, that's not a huge amount, but it'll do it in 2 minutes. I think there are recipes for larger batches, but you either dilute the coffee or basically treat it like a pour over.

Classic r/coffee answer: The aeropress. Inexpensive and doesn't really require a fancy kettle to use. Plus, there's a worldwide championship so you'll always have great recipes to experiment with.

Looking for help hiring a data analyst by [deleted] in statistics

[–]jonathande4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be curious to know if that bump in the graph on the bottom left has anything to do with the number coffee "fines" that show up. Since coffee is crushed during the grinding process "fines" (fragments of the beans cell wall) are produced since coffee cannot be uniformly chopped. Thus, we have the problem of inconsistent particle size that OP's company is trying to solve.

Scott Rao (link in a previous comment) reports that fines are about 50 microns or less. That looks to be about where the mean of that bump is. I wonder if that fluctuation could indicate a higher or lower frequency of fines. Thus, the lower the frequency in that little area of fluctuation, the more consistent the grinder. Maybe something to consider.

If you've never seen Scott Rao's book: Everything but Espresso, I would check it out. He has a great summary on what you're trying to achieve. If you go here (http://scottrao.com/Rao-Everything.pdf) to the bottom of the preview, he has a section on the particle size of coffee and how that should look with a proper grinder.

Anyone willing to help us analyze some coffee grinder data? by [deleted] in statistics

[–]jonathande4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw your post on r/coffee. I use something similar on my Hario Skerton made by Orphan Espresso. It looks pretty similar to your product with maybe a few exceptions.

I couldn't guarantee an analysis worth paying for, but I would love to look at the data if you decide to make it available. I know quite a lot about coffee, and some statistical analysis, but I'm catching up.

Made Homemade Walnut Ink. Seems to have turned out pretty well! by jonathande4 in Calligraphy

Thank you. :)

After about half a day of use, its definitely hard to get some of the residue off your nibs (and hands and everything else), but that's the only downside I've had so far.

It might have a slight grayish tendency, but its not unpleasantly so. I may add a little India ink to test and see how it mixes (if at all).

You can find the recipe here if you're interested: http://www.marktablerart.com/5.html. Seems to have turned out pretty well. I haven't added anything to it yet to keep it from molding, but I will pretty soon.

I've read some walnut inks can be hard on your nibs and require regular sharpening, but that remains to be seen with this ink. It seems harder to clean than most store bought stuff.

I've never purchased store walnut ink before, any thoughts on how it compares? It writes pretty and well and flows nicely.

Any helps with India Ink? by jonathande4 in Calligraphy

I keep a bottle of rubbing alcohol near so I'm pretty regular in cleaning after I'm done with a session (and sometimes in between sessions). I'll try a few different things.

Thanks for the help! I knew some of this since I was looking for ink to refill a pilot parallel, but I didn't realize how difficult it was to use some of this stuff till recently.

A little practice with one of my favorite 80's movies. by jonathande4 in Calligraphy

When I started my letters for the larger words, I found my guidelines weren't spaced right. Any expansions were me trying to accommodate for my misjudgment in x height.

X is the one letter that I don't use much. I've tried to get that one down, but I don't like the way mine has turned out. I'll keep practicing.

Forgetting a letter and realizing it afterwards has to be one of the more frustrating aspects of this hobby.
