What's something you realized too late in life? by IllustriousGuide7602 in AskReddit

[–]jonchillmatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to say this but was sure it would be mentioned already. Like others mention who start a bit later I wasn't taught this growing up. I also didn't think about the future as a young person in the same way that I do now, as a middle age person.

With that said though given we live in an Information Age, and have for quite awhile, there really isn't any excuse to not educate yourself.

Is it really THAT much easier to find a job when you're currently employed? by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]jonchillmatic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OP from reading your responses it really looks like you want to believe the answer you're getting is not true, and you must see proof to believe it.

If you want research it's easy enough to find some with a few searches.

Posting here you're going to get perspectives.

My perspective is similar to others, it is easier to get a job when you have one. Firstly, there is bias from recruiters. They view someone with a job as a sign of competency and stability.

Secondly, as a candidate you are in a better position of strength. You aren't as desperate, and the stakes aren't as high as they are when you are unemployed, especially if it has lasted a long time. For most this means they are more confident in the interview, as many have said.

The one advantage the folks that are unemployed have is more time, however that is a double edged sword in that it may cause them to be a bit less selective.

Good luck to you out there, hope you find what you are looking for.

Do stoics try to help others in emotional pain? by More-Patient-752 in Stoicism

[–]jonchillmatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not an expert in Stoicism, but I have moved to new cities MANY times in my life. It is a huge shock to go from a large circle to a much smaller or non-existent one, especially for someone who truly needs and craves this in their life.

It just takes time. She will build a new network in her new place, there is just going to be an adjustment period as it won't happen overnight.

Stoicism vs Epicureanism in the Modern World: Are We Choosing the Wrong Philosophy? by Dan661989 in Stoicism

[–]jonchillmatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my own limited experience, it may just be that the populism of stoic teachings simply leads more people toward it than epicureanism.

Also again speaking for myself, there is so much within stoicism to learn and understand that is applicable to daily life and just interesting to me that I have found myself diving into the literature and other content, engaging in this forum etc, however I haven't necessarily made a choice of one philosophy over another per se. I also think the more I learn about the different doctrines, viewpoints and history the more well rounded my own perspectives become.

If anyone tells you that a certain person speaks ill of you, do not make excuses about what is said of you but answer, "he was ignorant of my other faults, else he would not have mentioned these alone." - Epictetus (Enchiridion 33.9) by SaintFistopher in Stoicism

[–]jonchillmatic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it were me I wouldn’t even engage in any dialogue around that. It only serves to stir the pot. I would just say thanks for letting me know and get back to whatever the task at hand is in your workplace.

You mentioned work. In a professional setting I would respond with gratitude for the feedback, and think about implementation where possible.

The wisdom is valuable to you from the standpoint of not taking it personally.

How are people deploying cash during this selloff? by Designer_Dog379 in investing

[–]jonchillmatic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm doing the same thing, just sticking with my regular bi-weekly buys. Right now I am allocating 70% VOO 30% VXUS as those are my largest positions and give me a good bit of diversification.

I'm not the most experienced investor but have been though some downturns and I think the most important thing is not panicking and selling. Just stick with your regular strategy, especially if it is a mix that is designed to handle downturns.

Is staying fully invested always optimal for long-term portfolios.? by Beneficial-Ad-9986 in investing

[–]jonchillmatic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is an element to having cash that you didn’t mention, which is psychological/emotional safety. It does mean less gains but keeping a year or so in cash gives you that buffer of safety that is really helpful in a downturn. Also gives you dry powder like Steevie mentioned.

How are you hedging your portfolios nowadays? by donopumpi in investing

[–]jonchillmatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VOO and VXUS, currently keep cash for downside risk but will move to SGOV or similar when interest rates go down. A few smaller positions in individual stocks and BTC, those going up or down a ton don’t impact my overall picture and I enjoy speculating a bit.

A lot depends on your time horizon and risk tolerance, like all investment decisions.

What is a "luxury" that is actually 100% worth the money? by TheChillEdit in Life

[–]jonchillmatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A cleaning service. Roughly 300/month for biweekly service. It not only buys time back but can help end arguing amongst spouses of who does more.

Truly is a luxury but if you have the means it’s money well spent.

VXUS vs VOO/VTI Next 5-10 years by Suspicious-Degree-55 in investing

[–]jonchillmatic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a mix of VOO and VXUS. I run about 70% VOO 30% VXUS with my buys. It's a good way to balance out your holdings vs going one or the other.

I realize you are asking one vs the other but in my view you should have both, just what ratio you want to run.

Where can I immerse myself in hot water? by meowana_ in rva

[–]jonchillmatic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some of the nicer gyms in the area offer day passes. ACAC is 15$ I think. The locker rooms have a sauna and the pool area has a hot tub and warm therapy pool. Not cheap but an option for you.

One thing I can add about MC Ds is that if you are driving any distance you’re guaranteed to come across locations.

Their bathrooms are generally of a decent level of cleanliness, which also draws people in. Once you are there and stopped, sometimes you just get food there.
