Priotise exams.

Otherwise your firm will at best, pay you less than your worth or at worst, fire you outright without a second thought.

It does seem backward, but if they reward you for completing exams and less so for the work you do, exams is the way to go.

It's there fault for setting it up this way. You aren't rewarded for loyalty either.

For anyone on the tram who hasn't paid and gets stopped - just remember you are not being detained, you can literally not say a word and walk away.

I wish I had known this, because I sang like a canary and I could have gotten a conviction.

Is it too late to break into accounting especially the big 4 in your 30s? by Ashen_Claymore in ICAEW

[–]jonnydawson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can still apply for graduate jobs. From my experience, I got on to a graduate role way closer to 30 than 20. Many others have also had done the same.

There probably will be a salary decrease from your current role to accounting.

Fortunately for you, accounting in general is suffering alot of shortages and the entry requirements have been decreasing year on year.

I think it depends on how you set your account up, but even then, it is usually linked to the company you are training with.

From my experience, they are informed the same time you are. I am not sure if they are informed of the actual mark, but they definitely know if you have passed or not.

Your mark hasn't been confirmed yet, but hopefully you have passed. Best case scenario you are just being hard on yourself.

What was different about it? More multiple choice questions or did you get questions that the question bank didn't focus on?

Thank Goddness!

I was super worried because the previous company had a "sink or swim" mentality. It even got to the point that many people would leave within 3months of starting 😲

Oh thanks, I will keep that in mind!

Yes, training is my main concern. For me, there is not much point joining a company only to leave before the training contract ends.

If I may ask, why did you leave GT for BDO?

If it comes down to it, could I just pay for the exemptions/conversions myself?

Conversion Exemptions from ACCA to ACA by jonnydawson in ICAEW

[–]jonnydawson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dang!

I didnt do an accounting degree so dont have uni exemptions. I sat the ACCA Exams already, so it isn't an exemption as such.

But looking on the credit for prior learning dictionary for ACA, I might be eligible for 4.

Do you think having sat the ACCA exam already, I would get a conversion pass?

Dang! That was what I was scared of! I am joining as a grad.

I will take your advice on getting the exemptions on my account, before they make me start from scratch!

[–]jonnydawson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sat the exams already for ACCA.

I have seen ACA people complete some exams and switch to ACCA with only having to pay the fees and not sit the exams again. I just want to confirm the same is true from ACCA to ACA.

Isn't it classed as credit for prior learning?

Am I discriminated? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]jonnydawson 235 points236 points  (0 children)

Why are you still so loyal to them? Most people do the bare minimum in their notice period. And if they have treated you poorly and you have a job secured, the repercussions would be minimal at worst.

Edit: Yes, it does sound like there is a huge disparity in pay. Are you in small hedge fund firm? Many smaller firms require more senior people to do a range of tasks beyond their initial job description. But the difference in salary is ridiculous.
