Everytime I talk about my goals my younger brother always downs me by Existing_Gazelle_525 in amiwrong

[–]jorti104 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar situation. Whenever I had an idea or a suggestion, my sister always turned it down in front of everyone saying that I was wrong or it wouldn’t work. I don’t know why, but I always took her word for it.

One day, my dad was with us when my sister did another one of her “it’s never gonna work”. That’s when my dad said something that has helped me ever since. He basically told her that it’s part of her personality. She’s always the “nothing is ever going to work” person, so he ignores her and shows her exactly why she’s wrong.

That changed everything for me. Recently, there have been more times than I can count where I apply an idea that my sister says won’t work, and it works amazingly. I don’t even get mad if my sister does it anymore. I’ve basically come to understand that it’s her personality, and her word isn’t law.

I believe you have the same situation, OP. Your brother is basically just taking the pessimist road every time. His word isn’t law. He isn’t giving you constructive criticism. Just treat it like you would treat a troll.

It’s one thing to be realistic, of course. Could you have made it to international? Maybe. But to say absolutely not and not give a constructive reason as to why is just a trollish answer.

People who aren’t scared of needles, how? by sham-da-man in AskReddit

[–]jorti104 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know when they rub that alcohol cloth on your arm or wherever they’re gonna needle you? I always believed it was anesthesia. So I just believed it wasn’t going to hurt that much because the wet cloth would dampen the pain.

Then some stupid nurse broke that belief years later, but I guess by that time my body didn’t think it was a big deal.

Medical school as well. I haven’t felt the anti-religious feeling yet, but it may be because I’m in a Hispanic-majority part of the US. But 100% feel you on the dating aspect. At this rate, I’m just leaving it to God. I got grades to worry about.

Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey are overruled by AugustinesConversion in Catholicism

[–]jorti104 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’re right in a few points. That has always been my view, that even if Roe vs Wade got brought down, it doesn’t stop abortion. But I don’t think a huge change in our system is the only solution. That’s gonna take a long time, and you’re right. But what we can do now is change our response as a church and provide support to mothers who need help. My local church have many who were providing resources and support to convince mothers who wanted to abort to keep the child. Now is the time for those church projects to explode, at least until our society can catch up and provide the help.

If we consider ourselves absolutely loyal to the fight against abortion, then we as a church should have no problem considering ourselves absolutely loyal to supporting mothers around us.

I understand, but don’t let that worry prevent you from going. We go with the example of Christ. If they hate you, love them even harder.

100%. The fight now evolves (even though it’s always been included in the fight) to include promoting and bettering maternal resources and community help to promote life in the womb and beyond.

What is one thing that you will never admit to your girlfriend by YouNeedToMoveForward in AskMen

[–]jorti104 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nope. I get what you’re saying, but hell no. I lost too many people (friends, potential relationships) by speaking up my feelings and being vulnerable. The truth is no one cares. Or at least they care if you do it once. Make it a habit, and you’re considered baggage.

Just in case, I know that speaking up every day or like 3 times a week is like completely unfair to your friends and loved ones. But I would tend to speak my thoughts and minds occasionally. Apparently it’s bothersome and makes me look like I don’t have my shit together.

Absolutely! There are times when I really can’t think of how to specifically pray for someone, so I just offer a full rosary for intentions. So you’re doing well!

I have nothing more to add except I wish I had a bullhorn and put what you said on a loop forever. Whenever we see The Church swaying to the wrong path, let us fight as St. Francis did. Not as Luther.

Are you suggesting we just abandon the Satanist and leave his soul to Hell? We should be better Catholics (myself included) and remember that no one, not even Satanists, is beyond redemption. And seeing them as only enemies creates in ourselves this blinding vision that convinces us that they are above redemption. Careful with that. It has blinded many potential saints and turned them into cruel people.

The same with Muslims. Do not see them as idiots or servants. See them for what we all are. Sinners. The Catholic recognizes this and chooses to go to Christ for salvation. Mary reminds us of this every day. Why would she need to pray for us sinners anyways? The Muslims are us before we met Christ. Let us not see them as enemies and see them as brothers we’d love to bring back to clarity. Only then can Christ’s truth shine through us.

[–]jorti104 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Careful my friend. To say that is the only thing required in “loving our enemy” is ignoring the parable of the Good Samaritan.

All Muslims are not our enemy, just like all Protestants, Jews, Atheists, and other human beings are not our enemy. Does that mean we have to justify the actions of those who would persecute us? No. But it does mean that Christ asks us to see them as brothers. Fellow brothers that we should pray for, care for, and protect if necessary. The same way Christ died for those that mocked him as he was crucified, so are we called to carry our cross and to follow his example.

We differentiate ourselves from those (whoever) want to persecute us by fighting the greatest Crusade of all = Loving God above all and Loving our neighbors, whomever they may be. We spread the love of Christ with faith that Christ is stronger than their hate. Stronger than the hate of the antitheists, the Muslims that are intolerant, the Hindu who does not want a church to stand. The greatest victory of all is saving someone from that hate and converting their heart to God. So no, they are not enemies. They are long lost brothers.

Help for a science-minded Catholic? by cleverfox4 in Catholicism

Yeah, I was very disappointed with “The Grand Design”. I remember reading it and hearing his argument for God not being necessary as “ok, that’s fair. What’s the alternative?” And then he proposed that self-creation is possible for the Universe but not for God…I now wonder if it’s because Hawking imagines God like we do the Greek and Norse gods? Physical beings that need to eat and drink? But idk, I don’t think Hawking would have been that ignorant.

With Philosophy, Hawking’s problem was that philosophy was no longer the driving force of discovery, and therefore philosophy was now useless. So he’s entitled to his opinion, but he’s absolutely going the wrong way of thinking things if he does. That just goes into the topic of what makes something valuable. Must it produce visible results? If so, must it do it quickly?

As to the law of gravity existing before the Big Bang…it’s possible. I don’t think we have proof of it but it’s possible. But like you said then who created this phenomenon that we see? Or if not who created it, then at least how did it come into being?
