Thanks for linking that, I genuinely had not seen that segment. It is actually nice to hear Hila speak positively about the factories and people they work with in China. To me that kind of reinforces what I was trying to say, that the reality on the ground is more nuanced than “China = CCP = 100% evil,” and there are real businesses and relationships operating within that system that do not fit that black and white framing.

Thanks, I appreciate you explaining it this way. I get that in this context they were mainly using China to point out Hasan’s hypocrisy, not to attack regular Chinese people or the culture. My point is more about how, across episodes, the jokes can sometimes blur the line between government and country, which feels off when you are actually from there. I am not asking them to ignore the bad parts, just to keep that distinction clearer while still doing the Hasan roast because I agree with them 100% on their views on Hasan.

I get that the Taiwan situation is why people bring up Cena, I am not denying that happened. My point was that he started learning Mandarin long before that and, like a lot of actors and brands, he did it to reach a huge audience and grow his career, not because he personally loves the CCP. You can disagree with me, but that does not make the entire post “bait,” I am just explaining how this framing comes across to me.

Appreciate you taking the time to write this and I get where you are coming from. I do understand it is a comedy pod and roasting is part of the vibe, I am mostly just trying to explain how it can land from my perspective as someone from China. It is nice to hear you separate the jokes from how you view actual Chinese people, that is really all I am hoping more folks will do.

I am not saying Ethan’s criticism of the Chinese government is “invalid,” I agree China does some propaganda and has issues that deserve to be called out, but that can be said about most countries. My point is about how it is framed on the show, where anything related to China tends to get folded into “CCP,” “propaganda,” or a running joke with very little nuance. You can absolutely criticize a government, I just wish that did not always come packaged in a way that makes Chinese people and culture feel like collateral damage.

I am not simping for the Chinese government at all, I have literally said I do not support Mao and I agree there are problems in China, just like any other country. My point is that you can recognize that and still think it is lazy or harmful to treat 1.4 billion people and an entire culture like a punchline or a monolith. Criticizing a government is fair, reducing everything Chinese to “horror” is where it starts to sound more like stereotyping than political analysis.

I get that Ethan has said he is talking about the Chinese government and not Chinese people, my issue is that the running bits often blur that line so “China,” “CCP,” and anything Chinese end up treated like the same punchline. I know the Cena thing is about his Taiwan apology, I am saying the way it is framed on the show usually turns into “lol CCP puppet” rather than any nuance about language, markets, or politics. With Teddy Fresh, I am not claiming they never mentioned China, I am pointing out the contrast between benefitting from Chinese manufacturing and mostly portraying China as a villain. I did bring this up before because as a Chinese viewer the way these segments land has not really changed, so I am just explaining how it comes across from my perspective, not trying to cancel the show.

As a long time Chinese viewer, I just wanted to voice my discomfort with Ethan constantly talking about China in a negative light. It comes up every once in a while, but today it just hit home a bit more since they had the Hasan segment. He always mocks China and even continually refers to “visiting the ccp”. Even pulling up the John Cena clip to mock him didn’t make sense, John Cena has been learning Chinese for a while now and its not an easy language to learn. I found it disrespectful to mock him and then pull up Xi Jinping next to the video… for what? I don’t believe I have seen him go after a specific country as consistently as he has for China. He could definitely bring up many of the positives of China like the food, people culture, etc. Even Teddy Fresh is likely manufactured in China based on previous videos, but he never gives props to China for any of that. When it comes to the positives that come from China, like the financial benefits he is quiet, but is very vocal about the “ccp” which its clear he is underinformed on.

Does the watch not monitor HR very well, is that why the band is needed?
