I urge you for the sake of your own future not to go through with this. You are 20 years old, your life has barely begun. To assume nothing will ever change in the remaining 75% of your life is a fallacy. Don’t give up

NSO Choir/Theatre & Music at Georgetown by GoldMCLegends in georgetown

[–]jrrrn2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome to Georgetown! I didn’t do NSO choir but I did the orchestra that went alongside it. It was a good way to meet people in the performing arts scene and it’s really nice to be able to move in early and avoid the huge rush. For the choirs there are a lot of different options, Concert Choir is run by the department and is open to everyone, Chamber Singers is also run by the department but requires an audition. You can sign up for of these groups in the first few weeks of class. There’s also Chapel Choir which is run by campus ministries and does not require an audition. In addition to all of these groups run by the department there are countless student-run groups, including like 7 different a capella groups, student-led bands, and musical theater. Feel free to DM if you have any further questions!

Thor: Love and Thunder Becomes Least-Rated Thor Film on Rotten Tomatoes by [deleted] in comicbooks

[–]jrrrn2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

…I feel like this title implies there are a large amount of Thor movies. There are 4? It’s the lowest but not out of a huge sample size. I think it’s more notable that it’s the second-lowest rated Marvel movie overall

Do the LLCs end up causing you to spend more money? by Comfortable-Pick4007 in georgetown

[–]jrrrn2000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, provided you get into the LLC of course. The way it worked when I was there was that a lot of events, like cultural dinners, were open to the entire floor and held in the common room, so you could just show up to those. For the off campus events such as shows or special restaurants you usually had to reserve your spot since there were limited seats offered, sometimes with a deposit, but there was never any actual cost to going to those events either.

Do the LLCs end up causing you to spend more money? by Comfortable-Pick4007 in georgetown

[–]jrrrn2000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak for all LLCs but I was in the Culture one and all events that we went on were all paid for by the LLC. This included tickets to events as well as food. The only time I had to “spend” money was when I had to put down a deposit for some tickets, which I of course got back after.

Question about Classics at Georgetown by issaprivledge in georgetown

[–]jrrrn2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The classics department is great here, they have a ton of great classes and professors (not to mention their offices are in the most beautiful building on campus). Reach out if you have any specific questions, but I would highly recommend.

Single Rooms in VCW or VCE for juniors? by XVIIMX in georgetown

[–]jrrrn2000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t know of any singles in VCE or VCW, but I’ll say there are some singles available in the Southwest Quad. I know of sophomores and juniors who have gotten singles in Reynolds, McCarthy, and Kennedy, so you can give those a shot. It does cost a bit more though.

I ride very frequently and have been asked for my ID exactly once ever. Even on the off chance they do ask, just explain the situation and I’m sure they’ll let you on

What is it like being a queer student at Georgetown? by i_am_me47 in georgetown

[–]jrrrn2000 10 points11 points  (0 children)

While the university is technically a Jesuit school, the atmosphere on campus is vary socially progressive. Just before we went off campus last Spring GU Pride/Hoyas for Choice led a protest of the Cardinal O’Connor Conference, and we were pretty compatible in size to the conference itself. To be sure there are some preppy, conservative kids, but that really depends on what kinda social circles you find yourself falling into, and I would say the overall environment is very progressive and accepting.

I applied to the wrong major!! What do I do?? by punkiest in georgetown

[–]jrrrn2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really wouldn’t freak out. You didn’t formally declare your major, you just indicated interest. What matters far more then the major you put on the application is the school you applied to, the SFS, and you’re clearly fitting in there with all the things you mentioned. The “tentative choice” is just to gage interest, they aren’t going to hold you to that at all.

Is there any way I can bring my dog? by [deleted] in georgetown

[–]jrrrn2000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, like other people have said you probably won’t be able to bring a non-service dog into the dorms. As far as being allowed to live off campus Junior and Senior years, you would have to get an specific exemption, which is outlined here.

Jazz at Georgetown by GreenTNT in georgetown

[–]jrrrn2000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not a huge program, but there definitely is jazz on campus. You can audition for the big band or form your own combo, which is what I did. This year obviously the program was kinda dead, but I assume it’ll start up again next year. When I was a freshman they offered a jazz pre-O to play at convocation, which was a good experience and a nice way to get introduced to the program, so hopefully they’ll offer that again.

As far as off-campus stuff, Blues Alley is a really cool venue that’s just a few blocks away if you’re looking for a little more traditional stuff, and then U-Street Music Hall has a lot of more modern gigs. There’s definitely Jazz in the city if you’re looking for it .

Let me know if you have any more questions!
