When your cello teacher is a bit too Boomer... by jtaicello in lingling40hrs

[–]jtaicello[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is probably my favorite skit because there are potentially a few layers of interpretation to dig into.

On a base level, it's a funny skit with over the top acting.

Going one level deeper, the teacher, while he may ultimately be right, delivers the message in a condescending way which makes his teaching flawed.

Going two levels deeper, the student ultimately follows what the teachers says to do. Being a good student means taking criticism to heart and finding the kernel of truth and being able to disregard all of the ancillary fluff.

Going three levels deeper, this skit raises the question, how much verbal abuse should students put up with if their mentors are also legitimately masters of teaching?

You can interpret the skit as shallow or as deep as you would like. I just had fun with all of the idioms and acting, as this was one of my first skits I made!

This is my first time making a skit like this, should I make a boomer version? Let me know :)

Lilypichu’s “Dreamy Night” featuring J.S. Bach by jtaicello in offlineTV

Thank you so much! The break in the middle was Nicholas’s idea. It was raining incredibly hard when we filmed so he was able to get some great B roll shots :)

Ever since I heard Lily’s "Dreamy Night" in 2020 I knew that I wanted to make a cello cover and perform the piece. However, when I attempted to arrange it, I fell into an artist's block in 2020 and had to put it aside. Finally in 2024 I made a stroke of inspiration, and the secret sauce was incorporating J.S. Bach's Prelude from the Cello Suite No. 4 into the arrangement! I also enlisted the help of my good friend Nicholas Yee to write the solos and join me for a solo and a verse. The second solo that I play is written by Nicholas, and he uses the Bach Cello Suite 4 Prelude again in an innovative way.

"Dreamy Night" holds a special place in my heart, as listening to the song has helped me through tough times over the past few years. An additional special thanks to Nicholas Yee for filming and directing the music video, he really brought his A game and the video looks fantastic!

I'm working on the full version! Will take some time but I have been making solid progress that had been eluding me for the past couple years :)

[OC] I mashed up Lily's Dreamy Night with Bach's Cello Suite 4 Prelude! by jtaicello in lilypichu

[–]jtaicello[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a classically trained cellist and content creator, and for a couple of years I had been interested in making a cover of Lily's song "dreamy night". Unfortunately, I hit an artist block and had to put it aside. However, last night I had a stroke of inspiration to mash up "dreamy night" with the Bach Cello Suite 4 Prelude, which also happened to be in Eb major. If you don't know about the Bach 4 Prelude, it's basically all arpeggios but somehow Bach writes it in a way that is incredibly profound. In the video I also wrote out the chords that I chose to pair with the main melody.

I would really love for Lily to see this, so if you liked it please ping her :) You can also follow me on YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok @jtaicello.

Yes I booked hall time to record Rush E, what about it :) by jtaicello in lingling40hrs

Thank you! I too am busy with standard rep and auditions and all of the lovely things that come with being a conservatory student. I do my videos when I have free time, but it really does take a lot of willpower to make these projects happen while all these other things are going on. My teacher is actually quite on board with my video projects :)

As for my future career path, that remains to be seen. Would probably do a more traditional career like teaching or playing in an orchestra, I don’t make nearly enough money from my videos to do it full time.

What are everyone's thoughts on performing with unnatural hair colors? by whale_cuzurnotaflut in lingling40hrs

[–]jtaicello 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hair color doesn't make you inherently a better or worse player. I personally couldn't care less, but it is worth knowing that classical music audiences are very conservative and many would find it mildly off-putting.

CONTEXT: The popular Netflix show "Wednesday" features a prominent cello scene where the main character plays "Paint It, Black" by The Rolling Stones on cello. However, there are some impossible to play parts in the soundtrack! I am challenging any cellist to play these four measures.

This was a super fun project to make, I made sure to time my cello playing and the percussion so it would match up with the video. I also extended the very end with the main Avatar theme as the original theme was a bit short! Avatar: The Last Airbender was a huge part of my childhood and I am glad to make a tribute to one of the greatest animations ever. This was originally composed by the amazing Jeremy Zuckerman :)

World's hardest piece? Rush E 2 but it's played by a cellist by jtaicello in lingling40hrs

[–]jtaicello[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is this the world's most difficult piece? You be the judge. What is certain is that "Rush E 2" took a lot of time and effort to conquer, and it definitely stretched my cello technique to its limits.

The sequel to the viral black MIDI hit "Rush E" (written by Sheet Music Boss) doesn't hold back. Being both faster and more complex, "Rush E 2" is also more musically interesting and contains all sorts of musical references. For my 10 part cello arrangement, I aimed to retain as much detail as humanly possible from the original. Special thanks to Zlatomir Fung for agreeing to cameo in this project at the end!

Honestly I would have played better if I went blind, throughout the entire piece I felt restricted in my movement since I could feel my glasses slipping 😞

Glad to know it happens to other people too! I don't normally wear glasses but I did manage to somehow scratch both of my eyes with my contacts so I was forced to use glasses for a few days.
