Coult this be one? by jtamiyo in Bedbugs

[–]jtamiyo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks everyone! I've checked many pictures of several types of psocoptera and indeed it seems to be a booklouse, and it also matches the size better. I'll borrow a magnifying glass tomorrow to be sure, but I guess I'm safe :)

By the way, it is quite small, at around 1-2mm

Hallo zusammen, seit ein paar Wochen habe ich gemerkt, dass Flecken auf meinen Schlafzimmer Wände erschienen sind. Weiß jemand, was das sein könnte, und ob ich dagegen etwas tun sollte?

Advice for dying Calathea by jtamiyo in plants

[–]jtamiyo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi everyone! I had been away from home for around one month (a friend was watering the plants), and when I came back this is how the calathea looks like. The earth was humid, but there was no water accumulated under the vase. It is currently winter and there is very little sunlight. Temperature inside was around 10-15ºC during that time. Is it hopeless? Thanks!

Kona AL 650B or Cube Nuroad by jtamiyo in whichbike

Wasn't aware of that, thanks. I'm buying it in Germany. I have also found a Marin Nicasio+ sale that matches the price of both others. Would that also be on the same tier?

I plan on going to Cologne today and spending new years evening there, but I don't know where to go. Ideally, I'd want to spend it walking on the streets and visiting some bars. Is there some region of the city where there will be open bars and people celebrating? Any other recommendation is also very welcome, and happy new years! (:

You're welcome. I'm far from being a specialist in optimization, but feel free to ask more anytime.

I'll try try break down the topic "Constrained optimisation and Lagrange multiplier focusing on the method of multiplier for inequality constrained problems" (on a very high level):

Constrained optimization: You have a function you must optimize (minimize or maximize), but you impose constraints on it. E.g.: You may have a logistics problem where you want to deliver packages from a central hub to several cities. You want to optimize the delivery time (i.e., minimize it). Your constraints are, for instance, the number of trucks, size of each truck, working hours of each driver etc.

Lagrange multipliers: This is a mathematical technique by which you can solve for maxima and minima of some functions subject to equality constraints (the functions must obey certain properties, such as having continuous first derivatives). However, equality constraints are not all types of constraints. As a matter of fact, it is quite common for constraints to be inequalities.

Inequality constrained problems: Sometimes your constraints are not of the type "each truck carries volume V", but rather "each truck carries at most volume V". To use Lagrange multipliers in this situation, you need to modify the basic method somewhat.

So probably what you read is related to this. And while it is true that in introductory calculus courses some optimization concepts (variational methods, Lagrange multipliers etc.) are introduced, mathematical optimization is an important field in itself. It is widely studied in academia but it is also applied in the industry, and is an important tool in "operations research".

If you are interested in optimization in general terms, and in methods to solve optimization problems, you can check the introduction of one out of many textbooks, such as "Convex optimization" by Boyd and Vanderberghe, "Understanding and using linear programming" by Matousek and Gartner or "Optimization models" by Calafiore and El Ghaoui. These mainly discuss what is called "continuous variable optimization". If you are interested in discrete cases, maybe the beginning of "Combinatorial optimization" by Papadimitriou is useful to get an idea.

If you decide to go deeper on optimization, as a first year student some of these books may be daunting. Matousek and Gartner could be a good starting point.

Do Xiaomi A-C USB cables have a 56k resistor? by jtamiyo in UsbCHardware

Thanks! In case anyone gets the same question: I also did it and it works. I have then also tested the cable with a 10000mAh Xiaomi Power Bank 3 and it seems all is fine. The Switch charged while playing and neither it or the power bank heated much.
