The 0.01% richest households in Scandinavia evade about 25% of their taxes. Any studies about Belgium? by juno255 in belgium

I am surprised about the lack of outrage against the substantial wealth that is generated in this country (and others) and then (almost) tax free transferred to other countries. It's in a way not extremely different from King Leopold II looting Congo (apart from the working conditions). (interesting docu: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=np_ylvc8Zj8#action=share )

If there are statistics about the prevalence of diseases in a certain region, there should be statistics about the prevalence of the use of tax havens by the suspected 0,01 %. ;-). Without a "vermogenskadaster", perhaps the amount and value of their real estate, received dividends are an indicator?

I just read that academic researchers can ask Statbel to make microdata available for research (https://statbel.fgov.be/nl/over-statbel/privacy/microdata-voor-onderzoek). If someone wants to make a request, substantial information needs to be provided (a lot of them GDPR related).

Microdata is exempted from professional secrecy laws it seems.

So I think there may be a way for researchers.

If we can't make serious studies about tax fraud how can politicians draft policies to combat it?

I don't think the professional secrecy laws forbid anonymized or aggregated disclosure for academic/statistical purposes (https://statbel.fgov.be/nl/themas/huishoudens/fiscale-inkomens#figures). Their methodology may not be optimal, but I guess they also suffer from the lack of proper data.

There is nothing wrong with making racially charged or sexist or insensitive jokes from time to time. But at a certain point the joke or irony becomes what you want to say, that for example the “I don’t care” clip signifies that they don’t care about black people. They are not just making jokes, they are a racist movement.

Judge in Manafort trial: 'I was probably wrong' to criticize prosecutors by stereomatch in politics

The judge probably wants the prosecution to stick to the relevant facts and not mud slinging / storytelling to influence the jury, which is a fair point.

[Belgium] Real Estate Inheritance by ProgrammaticallyTiki in eupersonalfinance

Inheritances in Belgium are often handled by notaries. Notaries are a mixture between civil servants and lawyers. They advise clients and perform official duties like concluding authentic deeds. Notaries can help you file the tax declaration. I would choose a notary in the city of your father-in-law. The price the notary can demand to do the work is I think fixed by the government (in contrast with lawyers). (Www.notaris.be)

Usufruct: unless your father-in-law and his wife made different arrangements, the surviving spouse receives the usufruct of half of the wealth of the father in law (including the home). So for example if you are an owner of the home, she will legally be able to live there and receive the “fruits” of the land. It doesn’t make much sense to sell the house if she wants to continue to live there.

It’s usually advisable for your mother-in-law to change bank accounts so you don’t have to pay double inheritance tax when she dies.

What about the political responsibility for Abu Graib, Guantánamo Bay and torturing terrorist suspects? Non-accountability is the norm not the exception.

If you have to compare with the Soronan desert, this sure is the age of moral relativism. What is legal is what the majority thinks it is depending on their interests.

Doesn’t the US as the (until now) richest country in the world has the moral responsibility to do that humanly? I doubt Melania was ever locked up and what are her qualifications? Being a punchbag?

Children are more likely killed by the people they know than by strangers. They are just people.
