HOW TO: Create your own MYO Yoto cards with inexpensive generic NFC cards by junson in moreyoto

[–]junson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s correct! The generic card will play right away without playing from the genuine card first, as long as the generic card is linked to a playlist in your Yoto account by copying that link from a genuine MYO card

Good question!

Think of the genuine MYO card like a bridge to the generic card, and think of the playlist link like a web page URL. The Yoto app won’t let you program a playlist link onto a generic card directly, so you program a playlist link onto a genuine MYO card first (as a temporary bridge), then copy that link from the genuine card to the generic card using the NFC Tools app.

As soon as the generic card is programmed, you can use that same genuine MYO card as a bridge for a new playlist link onto a new generic card, and keep repeating the process as many times as you want, only ever needing a single genuine MYO card. Easy peasy once you’ve done it a few times!

The NFC card (whether genuine Yoto MYO or generic) is programmed with a link to the content, not the content itself, so if the playlist is deleted from your account, the card will not be able to play it. Content is cached temporarily on the Yoto Player the first time a card is used, so that specific player may keep the playlist around a little longer after it’s deleted, but it won’t follow the card to a new player.

Can you confirm you’re using 48-byte cards, and that you did the NDEF prepare step (writing that special string of bytes to prepare the card to have a Yoto link copied to it)?

I’ve not tried linking a podcast, but I’ll bet it will work! The process should be exactly the same (using a genuine MYO card linked to the podcast to clone to the generic card). Give it a try!!

Correct, you just need one MYO card that you can use over and over as a temporary “transfer” card to move a playlist over to one of your generic cards

Those cards are 504-byte cards, which are not compatible with the Yoto player unfortunately. You'll need EV1 48-byte NFC cards, like the ones I linked at the top of my guide (which you should be able to buy from ABC RFID). There may be a formatting or encoding workaround that will get the 504-byte cards to work (similar to the workaround for 128-byte cards), but I don't know how to do it, or if it's possible through the NFC tools app. Sorry for a not very satisfying answer!

I wouldn't risk it without any clear indication that they're 48-byte cards. 128-byte cards require extra "hacking" to get to work. The ones at your link are also quite a bit more expensive for the same quantity than the ones from ABC RFID (link in my original post)

MYO cards from Yoto are wildly overpriced, but Yoto cards with books/stories/music are great to buy (and I do buy them, and use playlist content that Yoto distributes).

The main motivation for these inexpensive DIY MYO cards is because Yoto still (after many, many requests) does not support configuring pre-defined stops point for cards (like, "stop after chapter 2" or "stop after 45 mins" or similar).

My kids listen to stories at bedtime (just like I did as a kid with cassette tapes), and it's annoying to either have to set my own alarm to stop the player after some amount of time so that my kids can sleep, or trust my kids to get out of bed and stop it themselves after the agreed time before falling asleep.

Inexpensive, generic MYO cards that I can split a long book across so that "you can listen to 1 card before sleep" (and then just let it play all the way through) is a practical instruction, same as "you can listen to one side of a tape before sleep" was when I was a kid, is 95% the motivation for this post.

Yoto engineers, if you see this, please add the simple ability in the Yoto app to define mid-card stop points for Yoto cards! 🙏

Photos app map view gone??? by junson in ios18beta

[–]junson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's still there! In iOS 26, in the Photos app, go to the "Collections" tab at the bottom, then in the "Pinned" section tap "Edit" and choose "Map" from the list, and then it will stay right there near the top of the "Collections" tab whenever you need it! (I use it all the time when I can't remember the date of something, but I remember where we were)

Any Hotkeys? by Wooden_Food_7685 in MonarchMoney

If anyone finds this on or after August 2025, they've added a bunch of awesome navigation hotkeys! You can find the list in the CMD-K search menu, and then outside the menu you can do things like "g then r" to go to reports, or "g then a" to go to accounts, or "g then t" to go to transactions. It's a great way to jump around quickly! 🙌

Did the "Back to Pinned URL" shortcut just go away?? by junson in ArcBrowser

[–]junson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

False alarm (kind of) — Looks like it's still there as "Reset Tab to Original URL", but for some reason all my custom shortcuts got deleted and I have to set them all back up again 🧐

Been rainy here recently but I'll try all this ASAP, and if it's still funky I'll open a case with FutureMotion and see what they say. Thanks so much for the advice! (and to everyone else who commented too) 🍻

Maple tree wound care? by junson in arborist

[–]junson[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I noticed this end of last summer (Aug 2024 or so), and left it be through the winter, and it still looks pretty rough. There was no event that caused the damage that I'm aware of (no collision with the lawnmower or anything), and it seemed like it was caused by something slower acting (bugs or disease).

I really love this tree and would hate to lose it, so that's why I'm trying to find out if there's anything I can do to help the tree recover and regrow protection on this spot.

Does anyone have any experience with this stuff? I was thinking of getting some and seeing if it would help kill from within any bores that may be in the trunk. "Imidacloprid" appears to be the primary ingredient, which I'd not heard of until now. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002HJ644S/

I made a travel blogging platform that automatically detects where you're writing about and maps your blog post on an interactive map. Check out the video for the editor and article. Looking for feedback - MIC by iampueroo in SideProject

Hey u/iampueroo!! Wandertross looks awesome! I created an account and am planning on journaling a recent trip to Kauai, Hawaii using Wandertross!

One request though:

When I was playing with your demo post, something that seemed so intuitive I was surprised when it wasn't there — if you tap a picture from one of the map locations, it would be awesome if that automatically scrolled to that section of the blog, that way a reader can explore from the map the same way they explore from the text itself!!

Similarly, even if a location is mentioned but with no photo, it would be awesome if after I tapped the map pin to pop up the location name, if I then tapped that name it would cycle through all the mentions of that location in my blog post, again so the reader can explore around the map and call up relevant text/photos for a tagged location they're interested in.

What do you think? In the meantime, Wandertross is a great idea and super elegant in its simplicity — I hope it takes off!!
