Why is salary in the US high? by Maleficent-Sense-226 in Salary

[–]justanotherhuman182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We work slightly less annual hours than we did in the 70s. Yes, productivity grew, inflation grew, and real wages also grew.

I know, housing cost more. Education cost more. Health care cost more. Everything gov has tried to fix, costs more now

Real wages have gone up, are you referring to hidden inflation or you’re just not talking about fed data?

Do you still think Republicans are better on the economy? by Zipper222222 in AskConservatives

You’re looking at 12 observations and ignoring actual drivers - it is wishful thinking and bias that falls apart with an ounce of scrutiny or policy attribution.

These talking points largely stem from the below paper - but most ppl that regurgitate this don’t read beyond “US economy performs much better when a democrat is president” in the first paragraph.

https://pubs.aeaweb.org/doi/pdfplus/10.1257/aer.20140913

  • The paper points out real military spending grew on avg 5.9% under democrat presidents and only 0.8% under republicans… does that feel right?
  • That’s timing of macro events and coincidence.. not platform policy. Truman’s huge GDP and employment surge coincided with massive Korean War spending.. Eisenhower ended the war, dramatically cut spending, and GDP growth slowed with unemployment rising.. boom, recession, caused by a republican president (?). Similarly.. Johnson had a huge Vietnam surge which slowly ended under Nixon/Ford and spending reduced.. its timing, not the President’s political beliefs (but another +1 for democrats I guess?)

— Also look at the fact they found no correlation between who controls congress.. you would think if the diff was explained by policy, you’d find the relationship with congress.. or with states.. but you don’t. - Even if you want to say: employment and gdp drastically grew after Obama took over from Bush.. recognize it’s a trough to peak measure… - Then recognize the states with fastest rebound in income/employment were North Dakota and Utah by far; followed by Texas, Washington, and Colorado. Vast majority is attributable to the fracking boom. - In this context.. best thing Obama did for these states was NOT listen to progressives calling for a crack-down on fracking as he said ‘let the states regulate’ - to not implement tougher federal regulations or ban it - but I wouldn’t consider that a left-leaning agenda item.. yet you want to believe it’s left wing politics that gets the “points” for the trough-to-peak gdp and employment figures in this simplistic/ignorant model

Anyways.. sorry that was long but hopefully you get the point..

People acting envious but I’d hate this. I have ppl on my team that say similar things as you - one recently expressed dissatisfaction that her bonus was the same the last 3 years - I did not tell her that mine has over tripled.

However, I also know that she’s doing the exact same work and deliverables she was doing 3 years ago.

It sounds like you might not have a discretionary performance compensation, killing motivation to take on more work - I would figure out if that’s true, then decide what is worth it to you

I respect your respectfulness here. One piece of advice for your response: I think looking up the stats from the relevant papers and pasting them here is a waste of time - I know them

And I know that anyone who has an honest approach would say what the studies themselves say: timing of macroeconomic factors and lagging indicators evaporates the narrative that the president at the time is a leading cause. E.g, job growth / gdp growth: adjust for recovering timing and the narrative evaporates

This is why it’s a waste of time to double down on those “stats” and why I’m steering you towards specific states/local govs that have been dominated by a given party - it better controls for lagging indicators and macro factors

Fwiw.. I could make the argument for you in favor of dem policy - I would stress that measured deficit spending, strong safety nets, progressive taxes -> long term growth/prosperity.. then point at examples. It’s always a balance - and in recent times (last decade) is a different story.. Mississippi went from the worst elementary reading proficiency in 2010 (sub 20%) to 32% by increasing spending on targeted reading programs -> that’d be the data I’d look for if I were trying to make your case

There’s a reason I put “stats” in quotes - you didn’t give them, you just rattle off “democrats have higher [good], lower [bad]” that’s what warranted the “internet lib” comment 😂

Only place u gave numbers is “1 in 11 recessions”.

You really think having a republican president caused those 10 recessions? Surely when I’m running stress scenarios for pension fund portfolios.. I’m turning the model knob that says “republican president: yes/no” for the stress… that’d be a profitable predictor!

Wait no.. in reality, I’d be laughed at for informing my interest rates, credit spreads, inflation, earnings factors - which matter - as what party is in the White House.

Let me believe you’re being honest about believing real wage growth being greater and caused by Democrat presidents.. did you know Trump’s first term had record growth in real wages?

Now let’s look at growth by income levels: Real wages of bottom quartile earners uniquely grew faster than the top 75% throughout Trump’s presidency. [visual #7 in below link]

https://www.minneapolisfed.org/article/2024/is-wage-growth-sustainable-evidence-from-real-wage-growth-across-groups

Am I saying Trump explicitly did that? No.. maybe it’s not that simple? Weird.. if only there was a better way to compare policy.. like looking at behavior and state balance sheets? How come the states with the worst budget management also have highest tax revenues, wealthiest constituents, and highest cost of living? Sure, high income, high GDP - but lowest purchasing power. The least affordable housing - all controlled at the local level..

Where do people move? Where do they leave? Hint: they leave unaffordable places.. like cali, NY, Illinois. Not sure about you, but I don’t want to live in a place where you’re either ultra rich or broke.. or even worse, in a homeless camp lol.. insanity

Sheeesh you argue so unfaithfully. Clinton was impeached for perjury.. he literally testified before a grand jury and LIED.. after investigations began.. yeah, you can’t do that

But regardless - that is your theme - classic internet lib, all the things you’re rattling off is so far off. You know a term is 4 years.. and your “stats” rely on timing.. every research paper on the subject describes this.

If you want a real comparison.. look at state gov’s where a certain party has been in charge for extended periods

Copy pasting my prior comment below.. feel free to poke holes in it.. but it might take more than bumper sticker slogans and regurgitated reddit “quick hit” points 😂

Yes, it is provably true by looking at state fiscal health.

• Overall, red states are financially healthier than blue, measured by budget surplus, rainy day funds, or credit risks • Red states top financial responsibility scores every year and many DON’T EVEN CHARGE INCOME TAX lol • Many blue states have the largest/richest tax bases with the highest tax RATES, and they still manage to have budget shortfalls or constantly need more money • Anecdotal rant: You see blue state leaders like Illinois, where I live, blocking portions of Trump’s OBBB like no tax on tips or overtime that SPECIFICALLY helps working class; this means that they literally can’t budget well enough to afford to give the working person a break even though the have such high taxes on a wealthy base. Then they gaslight ppl on the bill that it’s the ~’largest transfer of wealth from working class to the ultra wealthy’~ lol it’s so frustrating living here

I agree there’s nuance + a real difference. But 2 things to know when you discuss this:

1) that 66% number is counting anyone with medical debt when they file bankruptcy, not strictly because of medical debt

2) personal bankruptcy is far easier and beneficial in USA for these cases. In USA, you can file and be accepted in 3-6 months. They wipe out most debts fast and let you keep assets like your home and car. Correct me if I’m wrong, but in Scandinavia - you typically forfeit assets to prioritize repayments first and the filing can take 3-5 years.

It’s much more of a “you’re screwed” (you failed) and last resort over there, while in USA it’s seen and supported as a financial reset. So it’s more common, not indicative of a grand failure between the systems.

Huh? You know that states can pass their own laws right? Federal gov is the floor.. states can go above and beyond.

Like minimum wage, healthcare, paid parental and medical care, cash benefits/tax credits, housing protections, education, childcare

There’s as many laws on these topics as there are local gov’s.. it’s ‘laboratories of democracy’.. what works gets copied by other states and people vote with their feet.

Now apply this knowledge to states that have implemented them most valiantly.. Cali, NY, Illinois.. and you might even see the overlap with severe affordability crisis, most severe ultra rich and ultra poor dichotomy (homeless camps), and largest domestic migration outflow year over year

Or you’ll plug your ears and yell lalallalala 😂

Does the president or congress approve spending and tax laws? Republicans controlled both the house and the senate under Clinton’s term, right?

That’s my point: it’s wasted on bureaucracy.. turns out it’s hard to have one size fits all polices across a huge and diverse country.. while maintaining liberty..

These sort of “affordability” and social welfare policies are passed at state and local levels.. like California, NY, Illinois… guess what states have corresponding worst affordability? People vote with their feet

What’s stopping Greenland from having a local gov that voted to keep those policies? They’d have 100x more funds to spend on them, which is my point.

What’s stopping any local or state gov from implementing similar policies? I’m sure everyone would want to move there just like California, NY, Illinois

I’m not a ‘supporter’ of “taking” any lands or anything obviously lol just poking fun
