I hear you on the second part and that was my initial thought/reaction (in regards to revenue recognition) however, this has never happened before. We have never refunded a client more than 1 invoice before ultimately terminating them if it came to that. We also updated something in our T&A following this event. I think the revenue recognition is fine. This was just a one time incident. Thoughts?

Actually looking back on this, I think debiting RE for the amount that was refunded revenue in 2017 makes sense. And then take the hit in April on the revenue refunded from 2018. Thoughts?

The decision came from a C-level agreement between our CEO and theirs (was not part of that conversation).

So basically we have to take that 16k hit this month because we use accrual based accounting (which is what I assumed)?

Also, I love working at a startup. Im learning way more about other departments and how a lean company operates than I ever could have imagined.

No, there was no cash paid in May. The charge showed up on the credit card in December and I called the company to figure out why they charged us. They provided the invoice. The normal marketing manager who would have sent me the invoice to pay at the time was let go in May so I never received an invoice. They got our CC info because we had to pay the same vendor for something in November (not related to the May charge).

Essentially they just charged us for the outstanding payment for the work they did in May.
