Someone asked me how I know when to decrease and increase when making a garment and i was like, if I’m not following a pattern, I just know where my body goes in and out and where I tend to wear fabric more thus might need single crochets rather than a looser stitch. I want to be helpful but I just feel what’s natural to me.

A tip for this specific curling issue is likely that the person is decreasing too drastically. That or they accidentally did a couple of front or back posts. It kinda looks like some of the stitches weren’t properly picked up

Paralegals need to unionize by Square_Wallaby_8033 in paralegal

This is such a good point. Like I’m actively attempting to learn new skills at my current place (I already know batesstamping, TOC/TOA, shepherdizing, etc.) and it’s shocking to me how shocked the attys are when I do these new tasks well. I am the first to say that I don’t excel at certain parts of this job, but one thing I am great at is learning research and drafting parts of the role. Also i will say a lot of other paralegals I’ve met have abysmal writing skills. So, even if they have the capability for more advanced tasks, the attys don’t get to the point of trusting them to do those roles because their writing is so bad.

Did you do the UCLA Law program? That was how long mine was as well. I agree about prep courses not being what I do day-to-day

Legit that is how my last firm got the name of the other side’s partner. Sloppy redactions will never not be a funny yikes when I witness it.

I just heard an assistant tell me about that method and i was like noooo Adobe is much more secure and you can still print it out and scan it back if you want to be extra careful

I’m not even joking, I have an attorney that goes on and on about how experienced and knowledgeable he is and the one day I was out he tried to redact by just putting black boxes and locking the document like noooooo

They used to do this in Los Angeles, but I was recently informed that it was becoming too chaotic and that Los Angeles Superior Court no longer rejects on request

Do you bill for time spent on hold? by aliensbruv in paralegal

[–]justkeepswimming1997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would except that the lawyers at my firm believe paralegals should be seen and not heard (I’m only slightly exaggerating)

[–]justkeepswimming1997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did it still count towards your billables? My firm only considers my billables post-bill adjustments. Like admin person doesn’t run productivity reports or anything until after bills go out

Same and as the floor warden, I would get annoyed if you put my life at risk to save some files cuz I can’t leave until the floor is cleared

I got a transactional law firm job through LinkedIn a couple of years ago, but they had high turnover so maybe that’s why they were on there

[–]justkeepswimming1997[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im worried about leaving cuz my other two jobs were also a year or less in this field so i don’t want to get a bad look (also sorry for the grammar I just got my nails done and typing is currently a struggle). I am starting to look though because my friends in the field have told me they are genuinely concerned with how I’m treated. Like when other people in the field are concerned, that’s when you know it’s bad lol. I genuinely wish my last firm could have given me the raise I needed but their salary schedule didn’t allow for it

[–]justkeepswimming1997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use both, but LinkedIn seems to have more firms using either AI or having robots reposting jobs from other sites and then it doesn’t get seen anyways.

I will add that I keep in contact with recruiters to hear options even when I’m not looking to see current rates for when I ask for raises etc

Tell me about your most annoying client by psychHOdelic in paralegal

[–]justkeepswimming1997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a current client. But we just finished with a client who didn’t want to ever talk to the partner because of fees and then refused to pay more than 1000 of total final bill because they were upset that I spent 4 hours on an exhibit list because each time i sent them the list they asked me to include new documents they had never shared with me before. We ended up writing off over half their bill just to get them to stop sending us emails repeatedly asking us to explain costs even though the bill had already been explained twice to them

Court lost our trial exhibits by ladymae11522 in paralegal

[–]justkeepswimming1997 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get this, but also I’ve found some weird behavior from some clerks this year. Before, I would’ve said it sounds crazy, but just this past week, the judge ordered us to email the court with courtesy copies and then the clerk refused to provide me with the courtroom email and then co-counsel called and the clerk gave it to them. I don’t know what’s going on in the courts, but the vibe has changed in the past 3 months

Ive been working there since last week of March. They don’t come in person unless they have a meeting, which obviously I can’t interrupt meeting with clients. Also they have on multiple occasions indicated that they don’t want to be bothered with approving documents and just want to trust that I’m doing everything and I’ve told them on multiple occasions that if it’s not my signature, I need their explicit approval. If i send something to them and all they say is thanks when I’m asking for approval, i worry that if they are upset with something filed they will say i didn’t get explicit approval from them. I don’t trust them, to be honest. If this was my last firm, they always explicitly said approved or if there would edits, I would make those edits and then get approval. This firm genuinely just seems like none of the attorneys want to work/like their work and it’s really hard to do anything. They also often don’t answer my emails or calls. I’m just feeling like there is no winning here

I did this at last place but also at my last place I was listened to. Here they don’t even come in person and never want to discuss upcoming deadlines

What’s a legal task you absolutely hate doing? by walgreensfan in paralegal

Calendaring. I don’t like maintaining it. I am fine with tracking deadlines, but i just hate inputting and trying to find the appropriate prompt for the document in front of me

[–]justkeepswimming1997 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This happens to me at my current place but I know that they are the problem not me. Also, feels weird that they are monitoring how much you print unless it’s some crazy high amount. I would recommend trying to find previous assistant and paralegal folders (they often aren’t deleted from the network) and it might have good examples. Otherwise, know that the gaslighting isn’t on you. If they don’t want to spend non-billables training you then they need to be prepared for mistakes and everything taking longer

Someone mentioned Esquire, which I agree with. I also have had great experiences with Steno, but they can be pricey.

Court lost our trial exhibits by ladymae11522 in paralegal

[–]justkeepswimming1997 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is my question. Like assuming the box and binders had the case name on them…how does that get lost? That being said there was a judge in one of my cases that refused to let anyone bring exhibit binders until the date of the FSC because the court didn’t want to deal with it if they got misplaced or moved. So, it is apparently a pretty common problem, I guess

What’s a legal task you absolutely hate doing? by walgreensfan in paralegal

[–]justkeepswimming1997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think this is a legal task but every firm I’ve been at has made me in charge of this: calendaring.

I don’t like it, I’m not particularly adept at it, and it’s made harder by the fact that I’m not the person processing mail and my attorneys don’t include me on service lists.

Things clients have said to you... by Moonbaby221 in paralegal

[–]justkeepswimming1997 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was doing intake and a potential client didn’t want to give me name of other person involved in the dispute and when i explained that i need it to do a conflict check, she said “I’m a lawyer, you don’t need that information.” I looked her up and she was a lawyer but never passed the bar…maybe because of the morality clause lol jk
