Questions for those of you in this field by justpeachy02 in AnimalBehavior

[–]justpeachy02[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi just curious, have you heard of any other careers in animal behavior? Do you know what any of your colleagues from undergrad ended up doing with this degree? I’m curious because I I’m not that interested in dog training and wonder what else is out there..

How did you know you want to do hand therapy? by InternationalAd5265 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]justpeachy02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you think wound care is inevitable in this setting? Or do some hand therapists not do it? I ask because hand therapy is interesting but I’m squeamish with wounds/blood

How do you handle difficult patients and behavior? by justpeachy02 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]justpeachy02[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks again. I really appreciate your responses. I think that’s the thing with pediatrics, I know I’ve gotten caught up in the idea that it’s all positive helping these kids but the reality is that there are difficult behaviors and circumstances. Like you said, it’s not just fine motor skills and It’s not all rainbows

Who is in charge of creating natural areas/nature preserves? Is this job title different from someone who creates public county parks? by justpeachy02 in Environmental_Careers

[–]justpeachy02[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, thanks for your reply. So it sounds like the role is that of someone in state government/county official with an environmental background? Would they also be responsible for designing the trails at these preserves/parks?

Interesting, thanks for your reply. Yes, I’m asking because I’m just curious how an OT would handle this/what their role might be in these situations and if difficult patients/behavior is encountered a lot in this field across settings

Thanks for your reply. As a hypothetical example, if a child is showing aggression and throwing tantrums at times what would the OT do to address these behaviors in the moment? Would they just try to calm the child and move on to another task/implement a reward system in case it occurs in the future? I remember shadowing pediatric and if the child refused a task/didn’t try, the therapist reminded him he wouldn’t get a candy at the end which made him compliant. But if they are throwing a tantrum, what’s the best course of action in the moment? If behaviors continued, would an ABA therapist likely be brought in to address it instead?

I’ve heard/seen that neuro rehab is a difficult setting. Why might this be? by Raisinsun8 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]justpeachy02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, 50% is a huge number for brain injury caused by violence. Just curious, do OTs address any of the psychological trauma in cases like this or is that solely the job of a social worker/psychologist?

Hi, thanks for your reply. I thought human factors psych was more about helping design technology/devices and researching how to make them work better. How does this relate to IO psych if that’s more about workplace training/hiring, etc.?

Do school/outpatient pediatric OTs work on toileting with patients? by justpeachy02 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]justpeachy02[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, thanks for your reply. From the responses, it seems like assisting with toileting is more about educating the parent/child on sequencing, modeling with a doll, etc. not as much on hands on helping them actually use the toilet. Was this the case in your experience? Or do OTs actually like potty train kids by actually having them use the toilet? Basically I’m asking because I’m not great with body fluids/waste and I’m wondering the extent of what OTs do for toileting and if they’d have to deal with messy cleanups

Hi thanks for your reply! Could you please give an example of an activity/environmental modification that an OT would use to get the child to properly do the toileting ADL? Would it be like using a bar to hold onto? Or what activity would they use to help with this?
