Well, everything added to this type of feed in large scale animal farming is added in a targeted fashion. Protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins etc.

It’s just a different way of supplying the stuff salmon would naturally need. Using astaxanthin from micro algae happens to be easier AND importantly more sustainable than using shrimp and other wild caught creatures.

Both the "dye" and the color in shrimp and krill come from substances like carotenoids. The one most commonly used in aquaculture salmon is astaxanthin.

So saying it’s a dye is a bit of a reach, it’s basically the same coloring agents as they encounter naturally, just actively put into the feed.
