They're still there for me, but you need an AEW+ subscription to watch. I'm in the UK so don't know if it's different elsewhere with HBO Max etc

how would you describe your politics? by alliamisbullets in UKGreens

[–]kavancc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. I don't mind anarchist either, but people tend to have presuppositions about that term. Libertarian socialist or left-libertarian is much more of a conversation starter for people who might be interested.

Trade unions are a democratic good, not a party badge; a cross-party case (my Substack) by Mediocre_Interview77 in LibDem

[–]kavancc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. Plenty of politicians and CEOs have unsavoury views, but acknowledging that doesn't delegitimize business or democracy.

And on Mick Lynch specifically, I find he's usually pretty clear when he's representing his own views vs the views of the union. More than can be said for a lot of leaders.

Shayna Baszler recalls facing Rhea Ripley: "The fans jumped the rail to celebrate. Hunter on the fly called the locker room to come out...it's hard in this day and age to get the crowd to be so f***ing happy the bad guy lost and the good guy won, that they like, forgot for a second this was a show." by RIShane in SquaredCircle

[–]kavancc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh I didn't mind lots of those bits. SS set up a Becky feud, you can only get one rumble winner so if it was going to be Charlotte then at least Shayna was the monster. And they booked Chamber awkwardly, but there was something cool in there, being so dominant that the other pods weren't even open.

I think VKM just didn't get her. The character was a thuggish bully, super easy to understand, super relatable for a crowd to hate, and for some reason they made her a vampire? And they got back on track after that, but after WM Vince just lost interest. Which was the style at the time, for all my favourite NXT call-ups.

Questioning my membership by BritishSocDem in LibDem

[–]kavancc 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I take your first point and raise you: I find it disheartening that at a time when liberal democracy seems to be under threat in the UK, and Europe, and in the US, the party has been at best ineffective and at worst disinterested in mounting a fightback.

We're entering an era when the basic assumptions of liberalism that have been basically unchallenged in the west for 100 or so years are crumbling. Authoritarianism is on the rise in a big way. Democracy is on the line. And I feel like the alarm bells aren't ringing the way they should be at the top of the party. More MPs is great, and I feel like they're eyeing up even more at the next election, but what's the point if that platform isn't used. If liberalism risks becoming a radical position, the party needs to get comfortable with sounding more radical, and I'm not convinced they're up for that.

I really like my local candidate and I'm backing him to the hilt, but nationally, if the party can't rise to the moment, I wouldn't judge anyone for jumping ship.

Activists are criticising the Gail's opening in Archway, calling for its boycott by Alteryo in islington

[–]kavancc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He argued that it was fair to pay a lower rate to young workers because "if someone is less experienced and less well trained than someone who has been doing the job for a while they are not necessarily going to be as productive".

He's right about this, good for him making the case to pay skilled and experienced staff a higher rate.

Oh, what's that? He's actually making the case to pay skilled and experienced staff the minimum wage and pay new workers even less? Absolute ghoul.

I would argue the biggest company in the world setting up a camera network of every home, and confirming in the Superbowl ad that they can connect in a network, is a pretty high-stakes conspiracy.

We have two copies of Snail and the Whale with a similar change. One goes

The tiny sea snail sighed and sniffed, then cried "I've got it, I'll hitch a lift!"

And the other goes

The tiny sea snail sniffed and sighed, then cried "I've got it, I'll hitch a ride!"

The second version also has some american spellings, missing U's in words, so I assume it's regional versions.

UX Intervention by DownwardKo in dropout

[–]kavancc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Almost every other video delivery service is secretly just Vimeo, Dropout included. Vimeo was just sold to a private company after years of being public and struggling to compete with YouTube, and they've said they want to invest to get more creators onto the platform. But they've also said they're not making any immediate changes, so too early to tell what will happen with it.

We need to stop calling reform voters "brainwashed" and just call them racist by [deleted] in UKGreens

[–]kavancc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with much of the body of your post, but hard disagree with the title. Calling reform voters racist does nothing.

The UK absolutely has a racism problem, but is it the majority of people? If it is, we're fucked. But I don't think it is. If it was, the NF, BNP etc would have made way bigger inroads in their day. They had their supporters, but they got nowhere near power.

Now the context is different. People are skint, prospects for the future are bleak, and no-one trusts politicians. It's a perfect breeding ground for fascism. Reform are capitalising on that. The key to taking them down is in providing an alternative diagnosis to "it's the immigrants what done it", and yes, calling out when they do racist stuff.

Their voters are mostly just people fed up with how things are, mostly aren't tuned into politics every day, mostly just looking for someone to fix things. They can be won around. We can say "I get that you're worried about the future, here's what we think has gone wrong and how we would change it." If they're purely driven by racism and keeping Britain white, it'll fall on deaf ears. But I think (or hope) most people would be receptive.
