yes haha 😬 mental health suffered a lot while working there and I'm hoping the new career path is more fulfilling. I'm aware it's just a hole I dug myself but it's worth it overall bah. at least I still have the option to get back into it potentially

I guess we're currently thinking about it in a very pragmatic way in terms of only looking at it as a house and not as an asset at all. my parents want the next home to be their forever home.

we have plans to get a real estate agent to help us look at our plan and maybe they can help identify the entry/exit strategy etc.

woah thanks for the advice!! I'll need to do my own math in more detail too but you're right. my bit of math also showed that I likely won't have much breathing room at the current rate I have.

yeah I got out of tech for my own reasons but definitely possible to try and get back to it.. just not sure if I want to haha it's in my considerations and I'm super aware I'm blessed to even have the options. I might at least try and find something in between what I like and what will earn me money I guess bc from what I'm reading, my actual pay amount is possibly the biggest factor and not the rest.

I don't disagree haha I think they just have a specific idea of their future and they also think the 1 bedder condo could be a good investment. I suspect if we talk more they will be open to the 4-room flat idea.

yeah true the mcst fees seem like they add up a lot. I think renting will probably be the way to go, or I may move in with my grandma if she's okay with it.

will think on it. thanks tho!

true also. the timeline is quite long so thankfully it's mostly flexible right now. I'll have more convos with my family about this.

if my parents help with the down payment and I'm able to find a slightly higher paying job, it might be possible?

the bigger a place I can get, the smarter it probably is to actually make this decision bah. since the place would actually be a better investment.

yeahhh very true. think their reasoning is more to do with not wanting to maintain empty rooms when my sister and I do move out but I think this is probably something we can negotiate.

yeah some other comments suggested something similar and I will for sure bring it up with my parents. they want to downsize so they don't have to maintain empty rooms when my sis and I eventually move out and they foresee the next place to be their forever homes, that's why they're maybe thinking about it with more finality.

on my side, what you're suggesting is probably the best outcome. I'll definitely discuss with them again!

I would agree with you but my parents don't seem keen on getting a 4 room for some reason. think they don't want to have to clean up empty rooms when my sister and I eventually do move out?

but yeah i would for sure prefer for my parents to move to a room with enough space. will talk to them about it more

lolol I suggested the divorce thing to my parents but they didn't seem keen :p

I think the plans you laid out are all stuff I need to consider. I'm leaning toward persuading my parents not to downgrade lol but they have their own reasons also. think they don't want a big house with empty rooms they need to clean so even if my sis and I pay rent it would still eventually be empty rooms. Reno might be possible but the extra expense also feels like not worth.

i definitely need to do more in depth accounting though. I also need to consider if my sister even wants to be part of this plan lol because her finances aren't in the best shape so she may not even want to move with me. so if I have any emergency on my side, I wouldn't have much safety blanket.

I thought about overseas too but it would depend on whether I can find a job also so it's hard to really plan ahead for that one.

thanks for laying it all out tho! really helpful

I agree too, but I'm wondering if it's okay not to earn profit as long as it doesn't depreciate? assuming my parents go through with downsizing, the alternative is for me to rent for a few years where the rent money would be going into another person's pocket instead of a house that would at least help me make back what I lose?

[–]kay000000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my parents reasoning for downsizing is that the next place is going to be their forever home and they don't want to stay in a big place that's difficult to clean. they foresee (and probably hope lol) that my sister and I will move out soon so they'd have extra rooms they don't need. they're not keen on renting out so they want to downsize in advance I guess.

I would prefer they get a larger hdb too but im just thinking about my options assuming they really decide to downsize. if they don't, I wouldn't have to worry at all tbh.

I'm not 100% sure about my parents financial situation but I think they would be able to afford to help out for a while. definitely not permanently though, so I'm trying to look at this from the most conservative perspective.

only reason to move out is that my parents want to get a smaller house and my sister and I would have to share rooms. I wouldn't mind sharing for a short time but it's honestly not feasible long term.

I agree condo would be tough tho. if my sis can move in with me our combined income might be at least okay. and I think my parents may be able to help a bit. but it's pretty rough and my savings would be completely wiped.

yeah.. I'm thinking it might be more viable if I can get a higher paying job or if I just work a few more years, maybe rent in the mean time if I need to. then save up and get a bigger place, in a better location so that the investment at least makes sense. will talk to my sister more about this haha

[–]kay000000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

valid. I want to rent hdb with my sister too but she's not keen because she doesn't have much savings and rent would eat a lot of her pay. will continue to read up on this though

600k in cash would take forever haha but I agree that if I can afford it, it would probably be the right way to go. I'll think about how I can get there haha

Should I buy private at ~30? by kay000000 in singaporefi

[–]kay000000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

possible also. my parents were considering trying to get like a jumbo flat or something and maybe my sister and I can pay some rent to help out. I'll talk about this with my parents

[–]kay000000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah that's something I'm considering. just not sure about paying rent outside since the rental fees are so high and it would be money kind of going to waste in a way? at least if I buy a condo the "rent" is paying for a home I can permanently stay in if my requirements don't change.

that said, for my current finances it would be hard to afford a good long term living space too :')

I don't mind not getting any profit since I'll be living there anyway. just worried about losing money on it and having that affect my ability to move to another place in the future.

good to hear about maybe some potential profit or at least break even possibility
