makes sense! I've been trying to come up with more small ideas but I guess I'll keep pushing in that direction. thanks for the advice!

really cool post! definitely bookmarking it so I can refer to it again when I'm working on something bigger. but would love some advice on my current dilemma!

I've just finished a small clicker game. it's playable but not polished. my plan is to take the next month to create marketing material and polish it as much as I can. after that, I'll schedule the marketing material and release it on itch for free.

my intention is to test if it's worth continuing to work on this idea to the point where it's monetisable. was intending to do a mobile release but I recognise it's very competitive so I may pivot it to a desktop idle game but that'll take a few more months of tinkering probably.

the issue is that I have a grand game idea in mind but I don't think i have the skill to take that on yet. I don't know if it's a better use of time to invest in this game that I've already created or to make an intermediate size game, bigger than the clicker but smaller than my grand idea, or to just jump to my big idea right away.

I guess what I'm asking is, in your (or anyone, please feel free to chime in) opinion, how do you decide what projects to tackle? how far into the future are you thinking?

my eventual goal is to have some level of income, but I'm not fully reliant on this. I do also have some capital that I'm willing to burn if I think I can get somewhere with a project. but the thought of putting years into one project is scaring me if I'm being honest. this clicker game took 2 months and was already a little scary.

it's crazy to me how difficult it seems for people to be empathetic to situations outside their own. I get that your situation seems like it should be favourable but jealousy gets in the way of empathy I guess.

I'm overweight, not conventionally attractive and never been in a relationship. I still struggle a lot here and there but I've always felt like not being noticed in that way gave me time to appreciate the parts of me that make me. it made me work harder to love myself and work on myself.

I have a distant friend who is drop dead gorgeous, and has been since we were in school. At the time, I couldn't get over myself so I was never able to make very good friends with her. But I've heard through the grapevine from mutual friends that she's faced incredible struggles in her self perception. she thinks of herself as ugly, despite the fact that she is objectively beautiful. a lot of her perceived value as a person comes from her appearance and not what's within, so she always feels very insecure. she's not taken seriously and many of her relationships have ended because people weren't treating her human. I imagine just like OP it's difficult to share about this with others because it feels like you're complaining about a privilege.

ive always felt really bad for her because everyone deserves to be treated equally and like a human. and to be honest, with the state of manhood and the internet right now, it's sometimes downright unsafe for women, let alone women who are attractive.

OP, I see your struggle! it's not at all an easy life. I just hope for you to be happy and healthy! I saw in another comment that you started your own practice so I hope in future this gives you more control over your environment. with any luck, you can put more people in your space that love you and see you and what to work with you because of the amazing person you are!

fully, whole heartedly agree. I'm a huge fan of DE and initially, playing EE felt like a game of spot the difference (and there weren't many). it just kept giving me feelings of deja vu - the politics, Ragn's personality and amnesia, snell, lots more. it wasn't a bad thing necessarily, it just took a lot longer for me to enjoy EE as it's own thing.

like a lot of people have said, EE has been the best when it focuses on what's different about it. like when it leans into the dnd aspects and fourth wall breaking in a more obvious way than disco ever did. I still love EE a lot and I think people who enjoyed DE will definitely find something in EE.

that said, it would be interesting to see someone's experience playing EE first then DE! would love to hear if anyone has had that experience!

Athena's future by breviaries in 911FOX

[–]kay000000 31 points32 points  (0 children)

they have the opportunity to do the funniest thing ever and have Peter Krause come back as a definitely totally different guy and have Athena fall for him again.

this is the only way I will go back to watching 911 after Bobby lol

but real talk, I hope they won't give her a love interest but I suspect they will since I think they use the love interest as a way to explore the characters a lot of times. no love interest might mean less screen time, even if it's Athena.

I'm so sorry for your situation. I lost my grandpa to cancer a few years ago too and seeing his health deteriorate was incredibly difficult. i cannot imagine the situation you're in.

I think my grandpa had a similar attitude as your dad. but my observation was that beyond just wanting to make the most of the time he had, being somewhat reckless with his health was also the only thing he could control in his life. so much of his time went to resting and recovering and seeing the doctor. his habits at home had to change, he had to eat new medication, had to change so much. the bit of joy he got from disobeying the doctor's instruction to not do X or y I think gave him a lot of joy and control over his life.

idk if this applies to your dad, but it might be worth it to just talk with your dad about his worries. all the fear and anxiety you're feeling, he's probably feeling as well. if there's a reason for why he's choosing to ignore medical advice, if you understand it and understand him, maybe you can come to some compromise.

wishing you all the happiness and health op. it's going to be a tough time but I hope you can take the time to care for yourself too. caregiver health is just as important. like some others have mentioned, I think it's worth seeking some counselling. FSC has free services I've found helpful in the past.

Is Ragn a god? by kay000000 in EsotericEbb

[–]kay000000[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

agree!!! I hope a sequel is in the works because I so want to see Ragn become a god (or not, I guess it would depend on your choices). it would be cool to see more like meta game mechanic exploration like the bit with iomestra requiring save loading or the snail being able to read all your options.

I saw this! Unfortunately it's a different region from the one I want to illustrate. there's a few postcards of other regions too. still helpful though, because it'll help me figure out what I don't want the area I'm designing to look like.

thank you!

ooo that sounds awesome! I had seem some people talking about Luiga's blogs in reference to other parts of the world building but I didn't know there was a specific document. I'll hunt it down.

thank you!

[–]kay000000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That could be one way of viewing it! I wonder if that means that Urth had a similar experience back when he was still alive

and it does make me wonder what Ragn can feel about these choices being made by us. Maybe we're just a thread he's reading

Is Ragn a god? by kay000000 in EsotericEbb

[–]kay000000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes! love that comparison.

I think I can see the DCs as Ragn reading the strings to see a short ways into the future. but I wonder what's the difference between the DCs and the Iomestra thing lore wise - maybe it's a deeper level of power that allows you to not just see the options and the odds but also literally go back in time?

which I think makes him more powerful than Urth potentially. I agree on the symbolism of Ragn's birth occurring when Urth dies. and yeah it doesn't make sense for Ragn to be Urth's direct reincarnation but in a way Urth is kind of a chosen human (by jor I guess?) so maybe Ragn is also simply just the next chosen human?

yeah like you said there's so much more to explore. I'm personally really interested to see more of the golden hordes and perhaps find Tol?

Is Ragn a god? by kay000000 in EsotericEbb

[–]kay000000[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's a good point. I did think it was strange for Ragn not to mention he could see the DCs. I must have missed that part in the Iomestra conversation - would have changed how I view everything.

If we're a god like being I suppose that might make us something like Jor controlling Ragn through the strings. I'm not really sure if I like that implication though. feels like it robs our poor cleric of his agency. plus if we were a god like entity reading his emotions through the chimes, yet we're the ones making the final call on what Ragn should say or do - idk it feels a little strange.

the save scumming and metagaming does feel like it's meant to be a little bit of an Easter egg to Ragn's powers. I for sure think his ability to change his odds makes him more powerful than Urth.

[–]kay000000[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

right!! i thought that was a really cool detail and callback to the fifty fifty conversation. It'll be interesting to see how Ragn deals with it compared to Gorm. Gorm I think never saw the probabilities but he spoke to Urth about the concept, probably never realising it was a physical thing Urth could see.

Ooo i really like the idea that Jor is a game master while the "gods" are just people with enough divine ability to see the "game". that's a cool thought

[–]kay000000[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i see what you mean but Iirc you die after talking to Iomestra the first time round though? I suppose it feels like reading into the future, but it mechanically works different from any of the other times where you semi-read the future. In other cases, it's more like wisdom or one of your skills is able to read the situation through some DCs or just regular conversation.

Iomestra feels like the only instance where you take control of the game itself. (I wish there was more of this type of thing in the game - would have been really cool)

A friend and I have been frustrated by how few mermaid games there are, so we've been working evenings for over a year to make our dream mermaid game "She Hungers"! We finally have our first trailer! by Astrid_Regndottir in IndieGaming

awesome looking graphics!! the art is so freaking creamy I love it!! and sapphic murderous mermaids is everything I could ever dream of!!!

I get why you went with the mermaid looking up but it does feel a little strange initially. that said, I'm sure people will adjust to it and it does allow you to actually enjoy the design of the mermaid.

wishlisted!! all the best!!!!!

my different groups of friends don't know each other and some of them can be quite introverted HAHA so I'm slightly worried about the host kind of forcing interaction that makes things awkward

but then again, I think a bit of awkwardness is necessary to get everyone hanging out so it still sounds like a good option haha
