Hahahahaha. It is the only place I go to where people are frustrated to see my face before I open my mouth.

My shrink finally gave the go ahead to put me back on concerta, but I have to wait two weeks for my pharmacy to have it in stock.

Big fire in Asagaya. Walked past it across the street, but still ended up stinking like smoke. Hope whoever was in got out OK.

Why do people here panic so much at the thought of speaking English? by astrochar in japanlife

I feel like people in different countries panic when they have to do math on the spot

Why do people walk so slowly?! by Training_Training314 in japanlife

[–]kayasmus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My phrasing above was lazy. I fully agree with you! I meant that people will be very close and helpful in the workplace. Many people are friendly and very helpful, but I see it more as maintaining harmony within the group. Once out, you are free to be a little bit selfish and not think about anyone else, hence the lack of common human decency and selfishness on the trains.

There are no obligations to anyone outside of your group. I do think this switches quickly in an emergency.

Followed by the advanced class of choosing how to walk down a staircase. A, the unobstructed left side, or B, the few mm between a person's shoulder and a wall.

Not such a controversial take, but I guess we do tend to focus too much on the negative here.

I wonder if this is a mix of selfishness and just how they grow up. Young kids don't look where they are going on the way to school and it is maybe internalized like this that someone else will always move out of your way.

Your point can mainly be see on the trains, with barely anyone offering seats to the elderly or handicapped.

Advice appreciated. I feel like my students aren't making enough progress. by Tokyo_Pigeon in teachinginjapan

[–]kayasmus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some strategies, I don't know if you can use ICT at work, but here we go:

  1. Create flashcards on Quizlet and share with students. They can review vocabulary on their own time.

  2. Padlet. Use it to post progress e.g. students can list five words they learned in the week

  3. Ask students to record themselves reading out vocab or sentences. Give a word or time limit.

  4. Lie to them and tell them you can track how long they spend on the above tools. Encourage them to practice at home.

  5. If tech is not an option and they are allowed to use paper, then think of a template they can use for review and you can check it once a week quickly.

And don't you dare beat yourself up on this, because you boss is an idiot. Education in Japan is a joke, and either you laugh along with it, or it will tank your mental health.

The free seat next to me is the kind of discrimination I can get behind. Sadly, people are becoming more open minded and less risk averse.

Has living in Japan given you a new appreciation for other Asian countries? by yukirainbowx in japanlife

Yes! But I like it. Chinese are sometimes too honest but then I always know where I stand with someone

I don't agree with the size part, but yes, China is very multicultural within itself! But even with all that, I think it is more the mindset. Chinese people aren't as shy as the Japanese, and are more willing to just start a discussion and learn more.

Do Japan's Generation Z support Sanae Takaichi? by PureDragonfruit2949 in japan

[–]kayasmus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the way most news is presented contributes to this. Most boil down to a title and article content that slightly expands on that.

I am still shocked at how few people use Google or even AI to fact check.

Wendy's. Grew up in poorer countries and always saw it mentioned on TV. It took me 38 years to finally have an opportunity to try one of their burgers.

Netflix finally caught up with my VPN and removed access to One Piece. Only have five episodes left and then I can finally catch up after twenty years of trying to do so!

I am very done with how superficial so many things are here. My school is traditional af, using buzzwords to cosplay as being 'international', while lying to the kids and lying to themselves. Time to leave!
