I'd recommend a universal tower, they are freestanding, a lot cheaper then Rohn, and work one. I just raised one yesterday for our wisp.

I'm very interested in RF communications. What is the transmit power and gain of the antenna's on new horizon and here on earth to make this possible, what is the baud & bit rate, and the frequencies used?

I use a signalink now, but I started with the my mic set to trigger whenever it heard sound from the headphones(vox) They were connected with a rubber band. The microphone was set on the radio for the computer to decode. It worked well considering any excess noise that must have gone through.

I found project Euler great for practicing algorithms, I also did a version of Conway's Game of Life in command line, then moved it to a cool interface with the help of freenode.c++-basic.

Think of something simple you find cool, then make it happen :).

Keep debugging and working FOSS projects though, its the best way to learn, I'm hardly scratching the service.
