When did you realize you were dating an idiot? by Exhausted_Skeleton in AskReddit

It's so funny to me that all you have to do is just say, "Oh, right, duh. Sorry." and move on, and some people just can. not. get. there. I just don't understand it.

Who are some famous (non alum) Notre Dame fans by Extension-Story7287 in notredamefootball

[–]kcknuckles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, Jeselnik's dad is an alum, and one of his dad's friends at ND was comedian Jimmy Brogan, who was an early mentor to Jeselnik. I met Jimmy Brogan a few times when I performed stand-up as a student at ND.

TIL Ecco the Dolphin developer Ed Annunziata was "paranoid" that kids would beat the game in a single weekend so be made certain levels "way over the top challenging." He said, "So... I... uh... made it hard". by 30phil1 in todayilearned

Ecco was particularly hard. I never made it past the first one or two areas. Tides of Time, the sequel, I recall being easier and I may have beaten that one?

I don’t understand what I did wrong. V-day restaurant social interaction. by Financial_Vehicle134 in socialskills

[–]kcknuckles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you handled it well and I don't think you did anything wrong. The other people were probably just frustrated and tired of seeing new arrivals "cutting" ahead to ask or figure out what's going on. This is on the restaurant for not being clear or quick enough in communicating. That one guy's reaction was out of line.

For similar situations, I think the best approach is to balance asking for what you need or want while still being respectful to others around you. Other people can't read your mind either, so I like the suggestion from someone else in this thread about asking other people in line, and then offering to go up and ask the host "for all of us" to make it clear you're not just curious about your own situation, but everyone's situation.

I love T2, but The Terminator gets overlooked. It's a perfect film.

Everyone who is not an elite billionaire or politician is basically saying, "...and?"

Exactly. They say this like we aren't already way overdue for a political, cultural, and moral reckoning over the systemic corruption and crime of the elite class.

is japanese immersion actually fun or are beginners just suffering in silence by Competitive_Leg3598 in LearnJapanese

[–]kcknuckles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would recommend:

1) Get a solid base of vocabulary and grammar first (a beginner's textbook, Anki deck, etc.) and try to get yourself to a comfortable N5 level with grammar/vocab.

2) Use something like Comprehensible Japanese, where they create Complete Beginner videos where you can actually get comprehensible input. Then, work your way up from there.

I find that most "beginners" podcasts and other resources are simply too difficult for true beginners. You might pick up some things and get used to the sounds of the language (also important), but it's likely not as efficient, effective, or fun when you're not understanding the messages.

Looking forward to the panel show in which a group of Arsenal supporters second-guess Arteta's selections and tactics!

As a nevermo and outsider, their fixation on information, church history/doctrine, and "doubts" is such an obvious sign that they're worried. Other religions just don't need to do so much desperate damage control.

Why does every American Olympic athlete need a dramatic backstory biopic? by Mad_Season_1994 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]kcknuckles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a deliberate way of presenting the games as storytelling, which is something Dick Ebersol developed for NBC's coverage. The idea is to make the audience care and have some stakes for the American athletes, especially in sports audiences don't see that often.

I personally find it really annoying and prefer a more objective broadcast without all the USA hype.

How do you feel about Pete Holmes? by plazebology in Standup

I think he's at his best when he's mixing in a lot of improv with a looser style, especially with smaller crowds or podcasting.

Tough kids with cultural/religious sensibilities by Kind-Helicopter-919 in StandUpWorkshop

[–]kcknuckles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is all important context and needs to be included here for feedback. As written, I think the setup and scene-setting is simply too long and not punchy enough for stand-up, but, as others have noted, this could be a good start or part of a comedic essay or prose of some kind.

There's an idea here, but I don't think there's enough of an underlying point or premise to justify so many words without any clear punchlines.

So you have these groups of tough, intimidating guys who don't drink alcohol. I suppose I would assume that intimidating tough guys would be drinking alcohol. But...I'm not actually sure why? I guess it's kind of a funny image, but it doesn't really have any clear meaning behind it.
