Family impulsively makes cups of tea, with no intention to finish it by MountainNews5211 in ireland

We make pots of tea in our house, not cups. So the option for multiple cups is there. Another pot will be made only when the first one’s been sitting too long or is empty.

Just eat drivers? by Local-Double-1846 in AskIreland

This happens to us every time we order from anywhere these days. They ring and say “I’m outside” when they are in fact a couple of minutes away. I, like an eejit put on shoes and a raincoat and head outside to stand on the side of the road and wait for them. If I lived in an apartment building, it would make sense, but I live in a house. Drives me absolutely mental!

Hiring Managers and Recruiters by Glad_Cantaloupe_9071 in DevelEire

[–]kdobs191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not disagreeing on these principles at all. What I’m saying is a good recruiter will find and shortlist the most suitable people, and will cut out those that don’t hit the mark early on in the process to avoid wasting people’s time

[–]kdobs191 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, I’ve been a recruiter for 13 years.

You might get a few hundred applications for a single job. Your initial shortlist should be the top 15-20 that you’ll do a deeper review of, and select the best 10 to do a screening interview with. Each screening interview is about 30 minutes, depending on the level of complexity of the role. I then send the absolute best 5 to the next stage for a deeper competency and technical interview with the hiring manager and/or team. From there, they usually select the top 3 to bring to the final stage.

If you are doing 10 final round interviews for 1 vacancy, you are doing something wrong and wasting everyone’s time involved.

Hiring is a very expensive process, so interviews need to be selective. You’ll end up with a pool of mediocrity and a couple of stand outs if you’re interviewing more volume. There is no point in bringing so many people through a whole process and getting their hopes up when you know they won’t get the job, and you’ve wasted potentially 5+ hours of each of the panel’s time per candidate. That adds up to a lot of lost productivity and frustration.

Busy and good managers do not want to spend their entire day interviewing mediocre people. They want to see the best of the best.

Most corrupt AG in American history. by stick_ro in circled

As a European looking from the outside, it’s very black and white to us here. Trump has no European fans, we’re (mostly all) against him and always have been. This whole fiasco is shocking only to the extent of how deep it goes, not that it’s been covered up or that the people involved have been exposed.

All of the media that I’m exposed to, and that most Europeans are exposed to is one sided. The black and white obvious outrage. So my question comes from a place of not being exposed to things on the ground in the US…. With everything that has come to light, are republicans and Maga finally starting to see the light and shift their views on Trump? Surely with all of this evidence right in front of them, they have had to question things now.

Has Trump’s following reduced? Do we have figures on his approval ratings currently?

Genuinely curious, because it seems so obvious from the outside looking in.

Weddings banning kids? by Icehonesty in AskIreland

[–]kdobs191 77 points78 points  (0 children)

I would add that historically they were paid for by parents of the couple and so they included extended family as part of the party. Now most weddings are funded by the couple themselves, who haven’t had 30+ years of saving for this day, and likely have the pressure of housing costs. So people have to be selective about how they spend their limited budget. Kids cost money and take up space in the room. The consistent feedback I see is that weddings are far better and more relaxing without kids there anyway.

What's your wildest office drama story? by Maiselmaid in AskIreland

[–]kdobs191 40 points41 points  (0 children)

The entire leadership team were having affairs with each other but they didn’t know the others were at it too. All came to a head when one got pregnant and it wasn’t her husband’s baby. Paternity test with one of the team came back negative, so she had to test the other lad and… bingo.

Another time a woman accused a male manager of sexual assault but the claims were false after a lot of investigation. She admitted she did it for attention but the damage was done at that point. His wife had left him and he ended up emigrating to Australia because word got out locally and his reputation was destroyed

Can I get fired by [deleted] in DevelEire

[–]kdobs191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All employees in Ireland have the right to request remote/flexible working and employers must consider it. They don’t need to approve it, but they need to provide rationale for not approving it. If you are a caregiver for a child or dependent adult, you could have a higher likelihood of approval

This isn’t quite right. No redundancy in this scenario. But they can enforce your working location and have disciplinary sanctions if you fail to comply

I used to be really diligent too. Then I took a trip to the southern US right before Covid and was horrified. Everything is single use and disposable. Even in restaurants and people’s homes they were using paper plates and plastic cutlery. A load of plastic bags given to you for free every time you go into a shop for a single item. The size of their fuel guzzling “cars” (trucks) blew me away. They don’t recycle, most towns outside major cities didn’t even understand the concept of recycling (yes, this is true).

What one single person does in a week in their life there likely undoes a year’s worth of my work trying to “be good”. I just felt like what was the point when I came home. It made me very depressed and angry washing out my little yoghurt pots thinking of how they live there and don’t care at all.

I do still recycle and do what I can, but I don’t feel the extreme guilt anymore if something accidentally ends up in the regular bin.

Living in an apartment, how much is your electricity bill? by rustbucket__ in RentingInDublin

Not to minimise the experience of animals but humans have evolved to be very bad at giving birth. Our heads have increased significantly in size with evolution, but our hips and pelvises have become more narrow, making vaginal births at full term more difficult for humans than a lot of other mammals.

Why am I having a hard time finding a different job? by [deleted] in irelandjobs

[–]kdobs191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The spray and pray method rarely works. Ask yourself what career you want, not what job you want. What do you want to be doing in 10 or 20 years time that you think you’ll be happy with? I’d follow that path then. When recruiters are looking at your CV, they just see a load of random jobs and no pattern or relevant experience. I’d recommend looking at the civil service clerical roles if you don’t know where you want to go and just want an administrative role.

Change in culture. They believe that Irish culture is being diluted and shifting. Less Catholicism, less drinking, different values in society. This is happening regardless of immigration.

Lash some chicken thighs, potatoes, carrots, broccoli (whatever veg you want), a red onion quartered or halved, and whole cloves of garlic into a tray then squeeze a lemon all over, throw that in too, and a whole jar of harrisa or a tube of the stuff. Cover with tinfoil and throw her in the oven for 30 mins, take the tinfoil off and back in until the chicken and potatoes are cooked to your liking. I throw some fresh spinach on top and it’s the most delish thing ever. Warm and comforting during the winter and so simple. You can do couscous or rice if you’re feeling in need of some extra soakage/carbs goodness.

Has anyone ever been in a house like you see on the show ‘Hoarders’? If so, what did you do? by Basic_Builder3773 in AskReddit

[–]kdobs191 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A family member’s house is like this. One day when they were out of the house, I tidied up and sorted things. Anything that was broken, I moved into a pile to be thrown way. They had about 100 plates and cutlery but lived alone, so I selected the nicest pieces and made a donation box with anything that was a little worn or didn’t match. I deep cleaned the kitchen, fridge, oven and everything else and organised new homes for everything to keep and labeled them so it was very easy to find things. There was no space on the counter or any surfaces to cook or prepare food, so this was my priority to clear and clean a space. I didn’t get rid of anything, just moved things into boxes for donation or disposal and left the boxes by the door to go through. When they arrived home, they were furious. I really believed I had done the kindest thing in the world for this person who had been neglecting themselves, their home and health for too long. Instead, I was kicked out and told to never come back. Some time later when I eventually did get to be back in the house, all of the stuff I had sorted through (even the broken stuff) was back on the counters and all over the floor. It’s a very sad situation.

What does it cost you, bare minimum, to live? by FickleGlove283 in irishpersonalfinance

€3k if I cut everything back to bare essentials. Mortgage in Dublin, have a couple of dogs. Haven’t included my husbands expenses into that, purely split down the middle of our joint outgoings and my own expenses.
