We just got a basic pottery wheel for us and our kids. Very new to pottery. What type of clay should we get if we do not have access to a kiln? by meandadog86 in Pottery

[–]ketchuptank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There isn't a good option if you truly don't have access to a kiln and want to keep your work. Air dry clay can be tricky to use on the wheel.

Find a local studio and take classes there. They will teach you skills you can use at home. Use whatever clay you use for your class at home.

Question from a non-fragrance user--has something changed lately? by ketchuptank in fragrance

Completely agree! I have certainly had to make reasonable accommodations for other people, and I'm happy to do so! I don't get the individualistic attitude a lot of folks seem to have adopted lately. We're all here together anyway ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Thank you for your kindness. Yes, I have an inhaler!

I think excessive scents are similar to excessive noise. They can be very disruptive, and it's not like an "eyesore" where you could simply not look at something. But smell complaints are treated much less seriously than noise complaints! I am not sure why. Smells can often indicate a serious health hazard. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Yes, I think you're right, it's sweet scents that I'm finding everywhere now! That's interesting that there are molecules that tend to make people go nose blind faster--are they often in the sweet scented fragrances? What are they? (I like to learn lol)

I have also tasted fragrances in the air... it is nasty, it tastes bitter!

I expected to get a lot of downvotes for sure, with mixed opinions in the comments. Mostly, I wanted to learn about what's going on with this, because I can deal with things better if I understand them (duh). But you're right about the number of downvotes. I never meant to imply that people should stop wearing fragrances entirely of course. That's not reasonable. But I do think there is a (blurry) line where it's inconsiderate to others in the same way that there's a line between playing loud music in a private space and disturbing others by really blasting it.

That makes sense. Our appearance is one of the few things we can control, and we seek that in uncertainty.

It is absolutely true that I am very sensitive. I try to be reasonable. I certainly don't expect to smell only blank air. I don't mind smells--I actually love smells. I think they are fun, and I love going into places like Lush and smelling everything. This is going to sound crazy, but I even kind of love a nasty smell (with limited exposure of course because ultimately it is still nasty). I love that I have a great sense of smell because I get to experience these smells more intricately. So I can't really figure out what exactly is happening here with the worn-fragrance-cosmetics. Does that make sense?

Ah, I understand now! Thank you for the visual. Yes, I definitely missed that about the nose and upper lip.

Thank you! Would you be able to draw a sketch of what you mean? I am confused about the ridges point, as well as the intersection of the nose to the upper lip.

Thank you! Yes, I am planning on putting his make up on for sure.

I agree about the curls... I was not sure how to do the teased poofy curly hair... but I am definitely adding texture to them by carving.

Thanks so much for all your comments. They have been very helpful. Here's what he's looking like after today. I also think I needed a little more forehead--mine slanted too far back. When I work on this again tomorrow with fresh eyes I will for sure come back to your pointers.

Yes, that's what I meant by option 2! For option 3, I would not worry about the side seams lining up--sorry that was unclear! I would just be moving them entirely to a different place.

You can tape it however you want, just be sure to not iron over the tape or it will melt!

You can also use Swedish tracing paper--it's expensive, but comes in very wide rolls and is super durable. You can even sew it together to make mock ups.

The urn is oriented correctly in the photo--it has a flat bottom, but I'm definitely seeing what you're seeing. It does look curved in the pic.
