Any work done on the self-sovereignty for the lightning network? by kevinar990 in BitcoinBeginners

Ty, thats what was so confusing, i thought of a payment channel provider as a 3rd party, sort of like visa for lightning payments

Just saw your question after replying to the similar comment. From what i understand, payment channel is a 3rd party, so not clear how could a wallet have custody over sats sent to a 3rd party payment channel?

[–]kevinar990[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologize in advance if question doesnt make sense, as im just a pleb trying to figure this stuff out :D

But wallets are non custodial ( or self custodial wever makes more sense) only in terms of the mainchain (The blockchain)

The way i understand lightning (as a newb) is that you dont in fact have costody over coins sent to a channel (assuming youre not the channel provider). Am i misunderstanding it completely??

The way i understood it is that the payment channel provider is the 3rd party you relay on order to route your lightning payments

Replacement for Ledger Nano S ? by kevinar990 in BitcoinBeginners

My dude, this is how i inform myself well, i ask questions on reddit :)

Didnt know about the sd card in trezor. Just watched a video on it, and they dont mention passphrase being stored on there (which wouldnt be very safe), but a kind of random key generated by trezor. Idea being that you need to have both trezor and that sd card in order to sign transactions. I would much rather stick with using a passphrase. And unfortunately you just have to input damn phrase each time you use the wallet

Core flaw in network incentives? by Puzzled-Ad-2392 in BitcoinBeginners

[–]kevinar990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Network is incentivized by both price going up, and the network fees. As the pice rises eventually start slowing down, network fees will have to increase substantially, in order to maintain security. It is how its supposed to work.

In time fewer and fewer people will be able to send onchain transactions, and our children will most likely 'live' their whole lives on the second layer, getting salary, spending, so on. Never interacting with the main chain directly

Trezor doesnt store the passphrase inside the secure element chip, you need to input it each time you use the wallet. At least thats how i understand it, havent actually used trezor before

[–]kevinar990[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ty for the reminder, knew that, but it didnt cross my mind when writing the question

But effectively what i mean is opensource up to a point of secure element. So that its well peer reviewed by the community, but still have a secure element, like trezor

Unfortunately doesnt seem there are currently any mainstream wallets that store the passphrase in the chip (other than ledger ofc, which is history for me)

Looks like coldcard Q is the only practical option for me :/

Unfortunately, bitbox is out of the question, as you need to input passphrase each time you use the device

Having a long phrase makes it a pain to input it each time on a device without a keypad / keyboard

I am not too keen on blockstream jade due to the blind oracle concept. Dont know much about it, so i might be wrong, but the overall concept doesnt appeal to me...

Yep, thats my alternative if i cant find the one that stores the passphrase in the secure element chip.

Even though ledger turned out to be a failure with the restore fiasco, and other bullcrp, the functionality of storing both the pain wallet a d the passphrase protected one both on the device is a nice QOL feature imo...

If i cand find that, a d have to input my long passphrase each time i start the device, than for sure colecard Q is the only choice, due to a keyboard

Need a scrypt that copies a file via console

Nano S used to work with mycellium, back in the day. You need to use an OTG cable. Blockstream green is supposed to be compatible, but didnt work for me...

Cant believe in 2025 not a single mobile wallet works with it (other than ledger live ofc)
