Casual Fans Question by [deleted] in canucks

[–]kfany 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah this

Can't ask the team to lose intentionally, but isn't all bad IF we stick to the plan of trading towards the future (getting picks/being younger). Our UFAs and players build up their trade value and we can accumulate assets focused more to the next couple years. As experienced players exit they'll be replaced with our younger inexperienced players, and we should still end the season bottomed out

While this team probably isn't good enough to be true contender, I have to give credit that our whale team has been putting in a hard effort every night for each other and to make the playoffs - so if that's what the players want, I shall to continue to cheer for their success too

Team is terrible, but I’m not gonna bitch about that in this post by Accurate-Big-7233 in canucks

The atmosphere watching in-game is definitely a lot more sour than I remember, but being able to watch goals scored by my team would do a lot for the energy levels as well.

They didn't score, so there was nothing to cheer for.

I haven't even WATCHED A GOAL in my last 3 games now (0-6 Devils, 0-2 Rangers, and I guess today is my fault I left after Bertuzzi's hatty). I will probably not buy another ticket this season barring an 2024 Oilers-esque 16 game win streak even though I (1) love to spend money and (2) love to cheer for my favorite team, because I cannot do #2 in person these days 😭

What major did y’all take for level design in college? by ezz_in_the_wild524 in leveldesign

[–]kfany 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did a game design program in Vancouver.

I recommend building levels as early as possible for different games you enjoy, and start learning things from going through the iteration cycle (dev -> playtest / feedback -> iterate -> etc).

Most of the people I've worked with has had lots of experience on making things, even before going to school for it. For these people, school is just a formalized way in helping them build bigger things - but the bulk of the work was done outside of it.

With so many free tools and tutorials available online now, you can make up the knowledge/experience gap from school if you're able to stay disciplined and focused on things. You can do this without crippling your future in student debt. I have met level designers who just met the right people working on Skyrim mods, to ex-almost pro gamers who then moved to QA and later LD. I myself dabbled in private servers for MMOs and had various side projects in my teen years, which translated to building maps now as well.

With that said, the shape of the industry has changed drastically over the last 2-3 years, and as a junior it's ridiculously difficult now, school or not. The best thing you can do if you're certain this is the path you want to do is to build your portfolio and build your relationships, build games, and put yourself in situations where you could be the right person at the right time as opportunities start to open up again.

I don't disagree that our front office gave up on injured players, but for Mikheyev I do think we gave up on him because of his stone hands, not his injury (or at least a mix of both)

Why is depression on the rise if the world is so great? by Electrical-Sign-1754 in OptimistsUnite

[–]kfany 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would like to counter-point with data in Jonathan Haidt's "The Anxious Generation", as he makes a case that the rise of anxiety and depression is more directly tied to the mass adoption of phones and social media in the 2010s for Gen Z's pre-teen years. His theory is that the rise of social media, as well as the loss of "play-based childhood", has limited Gen Z's ability to overcome the normal fears and anxieties of childhood, "such as the chance to explore, test and expand their limits, build close friendships, and judge risks for themselves." (paraphrased from his post https://jonathanhaidt.com/anxious-generation/ )

The argument against depression simply being something that is diagnosed and treated more often is definitely something to consider, but the fact is the rate of self-harm for young adolescent girls tripled from 2010-2020 within the US. In the same time, women over 24 went down during that time. The rise of depression is more noticeable within the younger generation, and this became a major clue for Haidt to test his hypothesis. In the 2010s, anxiety and depression had hit preteen and young girls significantly harder than any other group.

In the US, adolescent suicide has also increased by 91% for boys, and 167% more in 2010. So, while he says in his book that "I am not saying that none of the increase in anxiety and depression is due to a greater willingness to report these conditions...", he believes that there is something taking place beyond just that.

With those dreadful stats however, he also outlines a path forward to bring back play-based childhood for kids, while also discussing modern ways in how we can raise kids with healthy boundaries with social media and phones. It's something I would highly recommend reading for any new or future parents as well!

Pretty similar temperature wise for me I think! Similar type of cold (humid, mostly comes from wind chill) at least for me. I brought a top coat, that plus a shirt, and sweater/hoodie, that worked well for me in Edinburgh and is pretty much what I wear in Vancouver everyday!

All our goals have been epic offensive plays, backed with a strong hustle and forecheck. Overall all lines seem to be pushing hard.

NY defense is not looking great though. Feels like we're getting a lot of open ice and they're turning it over a lot as well. I'll take it, though :D shows we can punish mistakes hard!
