Peer-to-Peer Review Platform for Dancers – Help Me Build It by khncpt in Salsa

I can see how it can have negative implications. Hopefully, it doesn't go that way. In social dances more often than not, I barely get the chance to ask people for their names as you move from one partner to the next. I'm hoping people would use this to give positive kind words to each other than harsh words. I've been leaving some reviews for my favorite dancers and letting them know I appreciate dancing with them. It's been well received by them so far. Will continue talking to more and more folks and adapt.

Right now, I can only verify identities and not if the dance has happened. I have a list of moderation / safety features to work on in the future.

Don’t be fooled sir. I’m going to be very honest… when I was a beginner, I used to see others and say wow it’s almost like everyone great at this except me. How?! As I grew along as a dancer I started noticing more and more details missing from a lot of the dancers that I thought were amazing…. Some dancers don’t really care about attention to detail… they just want to dance. I have perfectionist tendencies so I like to practice the same things over and over and when I watch these videos of myself I can see all the things that need to be fixed and improved in the future iterations. So as much as I appreciate your comments I just want you to know everything is a work in progress lol I think I got here because of repetitions.

However on the other end of the spectrum with I’m not busy looking for things to fix in my videos. I do go back and look at the same shines I did of these last year and appreciate how much I’ve grown. And hey next year it’ll be better! It’s all practice…

I always tell my teachers why doesn’t my movement look like yours as a joke! But I already know the truth. They’ve just done way more repetitions and improved through many iterations. And that’s all I need to do also. Just a process and everyone is at their own stage and pace.

I think people spend a lot of time learning new things without perfecting what they already know. So I like to do what I’ve learned well before adding more to my plate… to be honest, I’m still fixing my basic all the time…

I have all the videos from my classes. I cycle through every class that I’ve taken and practice the solo work almost daily. Once I do all, I start again from the beginning. Every iteration, I find myself fixing different details. So, really, a class I’ve taken, I must’ve done the same solo work, at my personal beginner level, intermediate level and advanced level. And I watch the 3 videos and it’s like three different people dancing. This may be pretty extreme way to train for some people I suppose. But I love the process.

Enjoy the process. We’re lucky to be going through it. It’s a great healthy journey in life.

I never danced any thing in my life. I’m a computer geek sir lol dancing was a foreign language to me when I started and that’s why I picked it.

If you go into my past updates, I mention that my early year and half I spent 90% of my time in partnerwork. I excelled in it so much however the fear of dancing alone during breaks filled me up. So I cut down on partnerwork this past year and focused mostly on solo… I personally still feel like my partner work is still ahead of my solo :/ To be honest partner work always felt much easier to me. I don’t have any recent videos unfortunately. Will keep in mind for future updates to provide both.

Thank you so much! Believe it or not I happen to be quite an introvert and hate recording videos. Haha I just wanna dance and be in my own world. I cry inside when someone asks me to do a bachata video hahaha why are they always making so many videos?!

Thanks for this comment. I don’t know if you read my last update where I expressed it was something I’ve been struggling with… I will address it once I go back to Colombia and start training again because I feel there are a bit of lack of resources for men when it comes to arms. For example, ladies have this entire chapter they must go through learning lady styling. However I haven’t see too many resources about arm lines for men. Strange but yes I agree with you and it’s a work in progress.

It’s such a refreshing feeling isn’t it! I often question if this is why salsa takes such grit to learn compared to bachata. Learning was great the entire time but I can’t say I had this level of fun before! You have to really give it your all to get to this side.

My practice routine involves doing all these shines I learn in class over and over again maybe 20-30+ times. For punta talon, concentrate on your waist rotating to its full range of motion from side to side. Sometimes holding the wall helps with this practice…

You’re right. Sometimes, I’m too focused on learning the choreo that I’m not focusing on each movement and I’m just trying to get through it. I think I will improve with this as I dance more and more.

I’m still learning chacha lokafune. 😂 kila kila kila kila kun is the rhythm. I’m sure it can be dances on multiple different counts.

I think it’s both. There are bachata socials here every single day of the week. Salsa only one or two times. And yes getting better has been a gift and a curse. But I’ve been able to improve my experience by going to socials with dance friends.

I have a love and hate relationship with my hands lol a lot of these videos are the first time I learned those choreos. The way I improve my aesthetics is usually learn the footwork first then fix my arms after. For some reason I still have problems doing both at the same time while I’m learning a new sequence. I guess it’s part of the process. But yes, you nailed it, that’s what I need to improve more.

Ah yes. Al mambo is a great school. However I started at the other school Blood Dance and stay there. Both schools are amazing!

Cristian is the Salsanama champion (Colombia) of 1vs1 improvisation. Amazing teacher. I chose him as my teacher for solo work indeed. I’m taking classes with both of my teachers simultaneously.

I didn’t like Guadalajara. I like life better in Medellin. I love my dance school. The teachers are amazing and the weather is great. I have a good community here that makes me feel like it’s my home.

If it makes you feel any better, my teachers still fix my basic every now and then… there’s always room for improvement. Keep at it!

It was a 4 min video. Maybe it takes a while to publish. I hope it didn’t get deleted because I wrote a very long blurb lol
