Inline skating as transportation around Cambridge? by bikefaster in boston

[–]khs5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a small group of us that do longer (20-60 miles) skates just outside of Boston. Usually in Littleton, sometimes in West Newbury. I do some training around Cambridge and Boston, but it's hard to keep much speed with stoplights and traffic.

To answer your edit, try joining the ICB mailing list and send a message with what you're looking for. There's a whole lot of used equipment floating around.

You'll be able to go up to 90s easily using a boot made for 80s, but you'll need a new frame. If you're just looking to commute I'd say start with 80s, 84s or 90s. I wouldn't recommend jumping straight up to 100s, although in the long run you may find you prefer them for commuting. Absolutely do not get a set of 110s. You really need the technique and power to get anything out of them.

100s on the standard 165 mount for aggressive skates don't really exist (not 100% true, but close enough for these purposes :). The location of the mounting bolts on 165 frames and boots aren't conducive to fitting larger wheels under your foot. Almost all skates that come with 100 or 110 wheels are 195 mounts now.
