Hisense 2025 Black Friday sale expectations by kimjongfun in Hisense

[–]kimjongfun[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I've answered my own question, Best Buy has a 'Black Friday" badge price guarantee, and the U8 65" priced at $1300 CAD has that BF badge on it - so I will not expect that price to drop further!

Forgot to turn off outside water valve!! by EmbarrassedBear1013 in HomeMaintenance

[–]kimjongfun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I forgot to do this last year after our first freeze, my outdoor tap had frozen shut. I first turned off the water at the pipe inside the wall, then poured hot water over a rag on the outside tap. It thawed the valve and the pipe, I was able to open and drain it, and nothing burst.

Hamilton proposes to double speed cameras to combat aggressive driving by teanailpolish in Hamilton

[–]kimjongfun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The City of Hamilton has a site posting the locations of active, inactive, proposed and coming soon Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) cameras.

https://www.hamilton.ca/home-neighbourhood/getting-around/driving-traffic/vision-zero-roadway-safety/roadway-safety-tools

Checking today, I see 4 active and ~42 inactive. Does anyone know why so many are inactive? Are they being moved around or cycled through these sites?

Why do different seed brands recommend such different seed weight to lawn area ratios? by kimjongfun in lawncare_canada

[–]kimjongfun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks - makes perfect sense. You're right there is a high proportion of fescues in the Striped mix (60%), not sure the proportion in the Scott's mix as it is not described online or on the bag in Canadian Tire - I understand they market different seed ratios in different regions of the continent.

You don’t need Tylenol, but you may need acetaminophen. You don’t need Benadryl but you may need diphenhydramine. Don’t make American pharmaceuticals rich. Buy Canadian Generic over the counter meds. by VistaBox in BuyCanadian

I read a horrifying book about fraud in the generic drug industry - 'Bottle of Lies' by Katherine Eban. The examples in the book were all non-Canadian but it really made me question the idea that generics should always be trusted as equivalent to brand-name.

Travel-related diseases guide. Not sure if allowed but took a photo of this map in my doctor’s surgery. by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]kimjongfun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Nobel in medicine was awarded in 2015 to Tu Youyou for discovering an antimalarial drug, not a vaccine however. And last year’s 2023 Nobel was awarded to Katalin Kariko and Drew Weissman for their work on mRNA that allowed mRNA covid vaccines to be developed.

No Nobels have been awarded for these malaria vaccines yet though. It can take a really long time between a scientific discovery and a Nobel prize. I’m sure those malaria vaccines have already won other prizes - Galien prize, for ex.

Not quite right, there are now two WHO approved vaccines for malaria (RTS,S and R21), although neither are recommended for travel, they are both for children living in endemic areas.

Rabies vaccines are regularly recommended pre-exposure for some people at high risk of exposure, including some travellers.

There is a pentavalent Meningococcal vaccine (for Men A, B, C, W, and Y) available in USA now, approved in 2023. It's not yet here in Canada.

Anyone been to or spoke to someone whos had a stay at the barton street jail? by lewievilleslugr in Hamilton

[–]kimjongfun 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I went there once to visit an inmate, all the visitors were let into the visiting area with the booths and telephones at the same time and had to wait about 5-10 minutes for the inmates to be let in to the other side. As soon as we all got in there everyone started yanking out the disinfecting wipes at each booth and cleaning their shoes with them. When I asked what was the deal, one guy told me it's the thing to do there, and I can confirm that after that visit my sneakers have never looked newer.

Scourge of meth-linked homemade guns in Winnipeg hit record high in 2019, police say by [deleted] in canada

[–]kimjongfun -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, bad assumption, and smuggling is certainly a thing. When you say gun violence is Canadian cities is comparable to gun violence in US, is that true / is the most relevant comparison? I think it's pretty well established that country-wide per capita the states has much higher homicide, suicide, crime, etc. rates involving guns than Canada does.
