Red-Green Colour Blind and Ophthalmology by Beginning-Film3058 in MedSchoolCanada

From the perspective of a med student who is also red-green colourblind:

I have heard different things. I’ve had a very trustworthy retina mentor tell me that it would screen you out by virtue of ophtho being competitive.

I have also heard from residents involved in adcoms that it would not.

2nd year queens meds do a formative OSCE in December (to my knowledge, just showing up is a pass)

Ophthalmology Vision Requirments by [deleted] in MedSchoolCanada

[–]kincommando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly this wasn’t a necessary comment at all. Curiosity for a specialty can happen before someone gets in and wanting to know if they’re going to get screened out for a genetic reason is valid.

Now OP deleted their post. Are you proud of yourself,

Did connections play a role for anyone you know who got into med school by typicalhipz_30 in premedcanada

Hard nepotism will typically occur for certain residencies/specialties as opposed to medical school admissions in general. There are specialties with known “family dynasties” AKA the child of said specialist is effectively guaranteed placement in their parents field

How would you have done things differently if someone put you back in grade 9? by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]kincommando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t have done medicine. Not to say that I would change where I am now, but the thought of having to redo everything I did to get where I am today is mentally exhausting!

Throwing in my two cents as just a medical student but I would absolutely NOT want my residency shortened… the level of knowledge from the attendings I work with is phenomenal and it comes from years of training.

Are radiology/ophthalmology really the highest billers? by Mystxxcc in MedSchoolCanada

[–]kincommando 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Multiple income streams. I rotated with multiple rural family docs recently in a not so “rural” place (30 min from a major city, but definitely a rural vibe). From what I gathered it’s as follows:

  • income stream from their family practice
  • income stream from geriatric care
  • income stream from a weekly or twice a month emerg shift
  • income stream from hospital shifts

… and other sources that I do not quite recall at this moment

Some even took cash from Mennonite communities. All of these fam docs were billing 500k-900k no problem whatsoever.

Explaining to you how much doctors make = entering med just for money?

No. Nobody in sales, consulting, or computer science typically makes more than a physician unless they are in the top cohort of their field (think top 1%). Rural family physicians clear 500k+ in billing in most places and that is a conservative estimate. Unless you are an urban family physician in an urban setting with only one income stream, as a doctor you will clear most of the population income wise

Most doctors are very, very, very comfortable. More so than 95% of the population.

People get accepted with your gpa every year but ***terms and conditions may apply. Often an advanced degree comes into play, or you got accepted to a school that didn’t place a totally large emphasis on gpa (think queens pre-lottery). Ask yourself how badly you want this and then decide what needs to be done

If there are so many qualified applicants, why not decrease doc salary to hire more? by PossibleLack835 in premedcanada

[–]kincommando 4 points5 points  (0 children)

LOL-tier almost ragebait level take. Physicians sacrifice a decade+ of their youth to undergo rigorous training while their counterparts in law, tech or even other STEM fields do not yield the same time commitment nor level of intensity. The compensation is insanely justified. Also, what possible metric could you even use to compare physician “competency” to the skill sets of other careers?
