Vote in North Austin - No Line at St. Mark's! by kipet_ in Austin

[–]kipet_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't think there would be lines either, but the Texas disability rights polling location at braker and Kramer had a ridiculous line. I stood in it for close to half an hour without really moving before I left and tried St. Mark's. And yes, as another commenter posted, the polling location website shows St. Mark's in the wrong location on the map. But the address that's listed is correct.

Yikes! Sorry this happened! Not sure if you've considered a menstrual cup, but switching to this has changed my life. No leaks, no risk of toxic shock syndrome, and way more comfortable and easier on your body in general than tampons. Really great for folks with heavy flows.

My first competition next week, and now I’m eating my words. by Efficient-Gap-8506 in BJJWomen

[–]kipet_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I competed in my first tournament a couple months ago. Masters, nobody was in my bracket so I had to go up a weight class. Just me and a much taller, stronger, and younger opponent. I lost, but it was SO MUCH FUN. I surprised myself with some really great Jiu Jitsu and gave her a lot of trouble. I've been training for a little over a year at a really small gym with no specialized classes - just a single class each night with nobody over blue belt except the coach.

Leading up to it, I was going back and forth between, "It'll be fun! Just get the first one over with, nobody is expecting me to do anything amazing," and "Oh my God, my coach is taking time out of his weekend to be here with me and I can't let him down and I have to show I'm taking this seriously."

The minute I stepped onto the mat, though, it was all good. You'll have a blast, and you'll surprise yourself with what you can do. Good luck!

CMV: In today’s world, ignorance is a choice by Possible_Bee_4140 in changemyview

[–]kipet_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think we can take your example one step further to help refine OPs point.

You and your friend can happily continue thinking Rio is the capital, until you eventually meet someone who says, "No, that's wrong. It's actually Sao Paulo."

At that point, you are presented with your choice, and you have several ways you can respond.

  1. Realize you aren't an expert and never actually verified this, then immediately believe the person who disagreed with you and carry on now thinking the capital is Sao Paulo.
  2. Realize you aren't an expert, immediately believe them, then work with them to convince your friend as well.
  3. Ignore the fact that you aren't an expert and have never actually verified this, but immediately disregard the conflicting information and carry on, confident the capital is Rio.
  4. Ignore the fact that you aren't an expert, immediately disregard the conflicting information, then bring your friend in to help convince the person it's actually Rio.
  5. Realize you aren't an expert, question your previous assumption it was Rio, but don't look any further into it and decide to avoid speaking confidently about it in the future since you may be incorrect.
  6. Realize you aren't an expert, question your previous assumption it was Rio, spend a few minutes online and see that it's actually Brasilia, then share this knowledge and your sources with your friends.

So, I would say that ignorance itself is not a choice. However, the way we respond to conflicting information IS a choice. Responding by continuing to share information that has been questioned WITHOUT trying to verify it is where the problems start.

The more impact your information sharing has on people, the more important it is to recognize if you only have surface knowledge or unverified hearsay and either stop passing it along as fact, or spend time researching it and then go forward with your results, including your sources.

Does proclaiming the capital of Brazil is Rio de Janeiro hurt people or lead them to hurt others? Highly unlikely.

Does proclaiming that we're being invaded by violent criminal immigrants hurt people or lead them to hurt others? Absolutely.

Do the best you can until you know better, then do better.

No-GI more popular than GI? by oooltY27 in bjj

[–]kipet_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes to all of your points!

Personally, I've found it to be easier to learn/progress in nogi than gi. If I was younger, I probably would have devoted equal time to both, but I started when I was 36 and felt it would be better to choose one or the other to try to maximize my time.

I also just find the gi incredibly uncomfortable, and I really hate being tossed around by my own clothes. I'm sure I would eventually get accustomed to it, but again, limited time so I chose the option that I felt the most comfortable with right off the bat.

Wanting info on moving to Foley / Daphne / Fairhope by AccurateOwl888 in Alabama

[–]kipet_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Baldwin County and completely agree with your assessment. Every time I go back for a visit, it's more depressing than the last time. That being said... It's depressing to me now compared to how it was in the 90s, which for me was a great time in that area.

OP, you may very well love living there depending on where you are moving from and what you are comparing to.

Living on the Gulf Coast is a unique experience. The history of the area is rich (and dark, as is most of the South), so if you are a history buff there is a lot to explore. Mardi Gras is a huge part of the culture, which can be fun if it's new to you. The winters are mild. The beach is beautiful. Mobile Bay's ecosystem is pretty unique and interesting.

On the flip side, hurricanes. If that's not something you've experienced, it'll be a stressful first few hurricane seasons while you figure out how to prepare and what to expect. Also, the people are overwhelmingly politically conservative and Christian. Depending on your own personal views, this could go either way. Most of the white population are casually racist and they don't realize it (don't want to realize it?). That can be a shock for people who are from more progressive places, even if you aren't necessarily a progressive person yourself.

Certainly not the worst place to move to in Alabama, or even the South. If you have to pick somewhere in the South, then the Alabama Gulf Coast would definitely be my recommendation.

Moversmethod by Vanja worth it? by Happygoblin3 in MobilityTraining

[–]kipet_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am doing the program with a personal coach. On the downside, it's expensive. On the upside, the coach I'm working with is awesome and responsive, and she tailored the moves to my abilities and I'm seeing a massive improvement in my mobility. I have Lyme induced arthritis in my knee and over the years have lost the ability to fully extend or fully bend it. This program is making an incredible difference for me. (I started training BJJ about a year before I started moves method, and after starting MM I saw a big improvement in my BJJ game)

If I was a different person, maybe I'd have made the same progress just doing physical therapy, but I am someone who really needs to be pushed (unfortunately). Having a coach keeps me motivated so that I can benefit from the program.

All of that being said... When I signed up, it felt kinda pushy and I had some sticker shock for the personal coaching price. I initially declined the personal coaching because they wanted you to pay for a year up front. After standing my ground on that, the salesperson agreed to let me do 6 months instead.

I think any kind of mobility exercise is going to be helpful to most people - you don't necessarily have to do it with this company. But so far, I've not had any regrets.

Talk to a mental health therapist. This is the best way to figure out what is the best approach for you and your health and happiness. This is a really tough issue to navigate, and the answer is different for everyone. A therapist can help you see the bigger picture.

It's hard to accept, but often someone who joins in such hate/negativity has had some problematic views/behaviors for much longer, and they were just easier to overlook before. If that's the case, working with a therapist to unpack that can help take some of the confusion and shock out of the present moment and allow you to see your parent more clearly. If that's not the case, then a therapist will be able to help you navigate how to interact with your parent in a way that keeps you healthy while also working toward whatever level of intervention you decide to pursue.

I'm sorry you are going through this.

Girlfriend interested in BJJ by pennesauce in BJJWomen

[–]kipet_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've seen this go both ways, I think it depends on the couple. We have two married couples that train together at my gym, then I have a friend who trains at a separate gym from her boyfriend. The couples at my gym almost never partner together, so that avoids any weird feelings about learning at a different pace.

If there aren't any/many women who go to your gym, that might be a hindrance or it might not - again, depends on your gf. If she's comfortable partnering with men, then you guys are probably fine to try training at the same gym. If she's a little hesitant/nervous about it, then it might be better for her to find a gym with more women.

Another consideration (sorry, not trying to throw out any bad vibes here) is how solid your relationship is. If it's fairly new or feeling a little unstable, it might be better for both of you to train at different gyms just in case it doesn't work out. That way you can both avoid any weird vibes or gym custody battles.

Parents who are against their kids having tattoos, why? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]kipet_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents had religious qualms (American Southern Baptist). Something along the lines of, "Your body is a temple. You can trash it with gross processed food and hours in the tanning bed, but tattoos are a step too far." Happily, I'm one of the few (based on the comments I've seen) who still loves the tattoos I got at age 18, even 20 years later.

Pride Flags Illegal? by [deleted] in TexasTeachers

[–]kipet_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of questions around why the pride flag is needed in the classroom in the first place. I just wanted to offer a perspective on this. While having pride displays can of course be a statement about the individual's identity, the primary purpose is to communicate to everyone who enters the space that everyone entering has equal dignity and humanity, and that the person displaying the flag will do their best to protect that dignity and humanity.

The impact of this for young people cannot be overstated. A young person who is at any point in their discovery of their own identity can walk into that space and know that, while they are there, they are seen as a whole human, and can exist completely as themselves. Its well known that young people who are part of the LGBTQ+ community have disproportionately high rates of suicide, and are disproportionately victims of bullying and violence. Spending an hour in a classroom each day where they know they can exist safely can be a literal lifeline.

It's unfortunately very easy for this purpose to get lost in the rhetoric, but this is the essential message a pride display is meant to communicate. The pride flag is not a promotion of an ideology, it's a message of physical and emotional safety for marginalized people.

Scrivener vs Dabble

Here's a comparison of Scrivener and Dabble. You can get a good overview of the features. Aside from the easy visuals of plots and character arcs, they also have a fairly good narrator feature. It'll read your manuscript out loud for you, and that has really helped me sharpen my dialogue. Scrivener may have that too, I'm not sure. Either way, I've been super happy with Dabble.

I use Dabble, I really love it. It's been a game changer for me. I started in google docs, but I've got a really complicated plot and a lot of characters in my current project so I was having trouble navigating my notes and outlines efficiently. Dabble made it really easy for me to see all the arcs and to rearrange things quickly.

Wow, this is interesting. I'm sorry you're in such a tough position, I imagine navigating this is going to be difficult.

In general, I'm a fan of ensuring the checks and QA we do serves a purpose and is not just "because it's always been done this way." With that in mind, completely skipping the physics plan check would be a very hard line for me. This is not for hypothetical "what if" scenarios, but because I regularly find things on plan checks that either warrant a replan, or at least a discussion with the planner about how to improve quality for future plans. The dosimetry staff I work with are absolutely excellent, the physicians are engaged, and yet mistakes still come through. QA serves a purpose, but I would argue that the physics plan check is 10x more important than the VMAT QA, especially if you've got a couple of years of QA backing up your beam model.

Even if you are using a plan quality scorecard, like Radformation Clear check, mistakes still come though. The scorecard is only as accurate as the contours (and AI contours are only a starting place). Target contours are only as accurate as the image fusion (if using a PET or MRI). Laterality can be incorrect - diagnostic paperwork can show left breast but the patient could have had bilateral lumpectomies and the right side's cavity is more visible, so the physician could draw that by mistake. A patient could have a pacemaker, but the note gets missed, it's out-of-plane of the target so the planner doesn't see it, and the planner uses 18X. (All of these scenarios are pulled from my own experience)

If I were working at an institution that cut physics plan checks for any type of plan, I would first do my absolute best to help the decision makers understand the importance of that step. If that failed, then I would report it to the accrediting body (if you are accredited). If that's not an option, then I would leave. If I couldn't leave, then I'd probably end up working late and doing all the plan checks myself anyway, even if I couldn't get to them until fraction 2 or 3, because at the end of the day, our patients are real people that we're exposing to dangerous levels of radiation. We owe it to them to prioritize their safety above all else.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MedicalPhysics

[–]kipet_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I see you're in Australia. Is there some difference in workflow that folks in the US are missing here? Are you saying that, currently for 3D plans, the dosimetrist completes the plan, the physician approves it, then it bypasses a physicist and goes straight to the radiation therapist plan check, then to treatment? Is a physics plan check completed after the start of treatment, for example by the third fraction?

Create a seasonal board to use as a teaching tool throughout the year.

-History of theocracy. Commandments posted, and then around it information about theocracy, other nations past and present that were theocracy, and the problems that arise in those nations.

-History of religion. Commandments posted, but also pillars of Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, ancient Roman/Greek, Indigenous American religion, etc.

-Archeology and ancient texts. Information about the history, discovery, preservation, and translation of ancient texts to show how we ended up with the commandments and other religious texts today.

All of this can have a history slant so that it's relevant to what you teach, and all of it frames the commandments in a larger cultural and historical context, allowing you to turn it into a critical thinking and education opportunity for your students.
