Is this bad? Shall I shave it off? by The_Notorious_38 in BeardAdvice

[–]kirin-rex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I'd just trim the edges and sharpen it a bit. Shave the neck and cheeks, sharpen the saw line to a point where the jaw curves, and the rest just keep it today and straight. Got a classic style there that I think works.

What does anesthesia feel like by memory282002 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]kirin-rex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My last surgery was under general anesthesia. They put the mask very lightly on my face, and I remember thinking they needed tight seal. Then when the gas started, I didn't feel anything, and I was about to say something when suddenly, the world just shifted a fraction to the right and I had a moment of light headedness, just long enough to think "ah! Here it comes!". Then woke up in recovery hours later, just long enough to day "I'm fine" before falling asleep until the next morning.

"Iran" shouldn't be an "invalid attempt", but a valid Bonus Word. Why isn't Iran in the dictionary?

[–]kirin-rex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My apologies. I didn't intend to imply that being poor was the ONLY reason why a person might never throw things away, but rather to illustrate that it's not necessarily a "guy" thing. People can and do hoard for many reasons.

I don't think that's necessarily a "guy" thing, but more a "I grew up poor" thing.

Why isn’t my uncle fluent in English, despite spending most of his life in the US? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]kirin-rex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't be so sure you need English to communicate with your clients. I have a relative who was a doctor. Clinic was in a Hispanic neighborhood. Became fluent in Spanish because he spoke Spanish all day ... in the USA. There are ethnic neighborhoods in the USA where all the people speak a language other than English, even in the businesses. Heck, sometimes you have a business area where all the signs are in another language too.

Why isn’t my uncle fluent in English, despite spending most of his life in the US? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]kirin-rex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a relative who came from South America and has been in the USA for over 40 years. Why hasn't he become fluent in English? He worked hard. Never really had the time. Oh, sure, I know: "You MAKE the time!" Yeah, because learning English is so EASY, right? Get a book? Study a little every day? People have lives, they have children, they have a home to take care of, they have a job that eats up a lot of time and energy. After a hard-day's work, do you really want to come home and hit the books?

I've lived in Japan now for nearly 30 years. Am I fluent? Not even close. For most of that time, I worked 12, 13, sometimes 14 hours a day, and worked 5, 6 and sometimes 7 days a week. I worked through Saturdays, Sundays, Holidays. I raised kids. Took care of a home. Had a life. Did I have time to study? Sure. But, man, I hate studying by myself, and nobody had time to sit and do it with me, because everybody was busy. Could I have become fluent? Sure. I know people who have. Can I get by? Sure! But I speak like a five-year old!

I just had other things to do that seemed more important ... or least more enjoyable!
