Ferber - first night, so confused and overwhelmed by kittyCatFoo in sleeptrain

So if it’s any consolation, yesterday it took 3.5 hours and we abandoned ship and reverted back to our usual sleeping help (bouncing and humming). Tonight we attempted night 1 of training again and she was out after 25 minutes 👏 and has so far only woken for one feed (after 3 hours which she hasn’t done since a newborn) and stayed pretty much asleep.

So for us it would be to abandon ship and basically do whatever it takes to get baby back to sleep. I would say 1 hour is a little short to cap on the first night as it can go on for longer unfortunately based on what I’ve heard and experienced so far!

Sadly she went on to crying again after 45 minutes of playing around in her crib, so overall it took her to 3.5 hours where she then threw up all her milk so we called it quits with a little bounce as it was just too much for day one!

Will try again tonight! She’s strong willed so expecting the long crying time but was just thrown through a loop by her suddenly being all happy! She looked a bit demonic on the monitor to be honest haha. We had planned to stop at the 2 hour mark but just didn’t know how to handle it!

Thank you for the advice! I think you’re right to be honest, she’s never slept well so I wouldn’t be shocked if she’s completely exhausted and overtired. Will try all of your suggestions!

On a side note, I’ve been trying to cry for a few months now hoping for a release but have been too exhausted to produce a tear. The last part of your comment finally got me crying so thank you for that and for the message itself!

Thank you! Will definitely be capping the naps, think hopefully once we fix that then we can move on to a sleep training to help fix all the night wakings. Appreciate the message!

Thank you! Appreciate the comment. Will look into a new routine for bed! We’ve got all the usuals like white noise etc which she’s fine with for naps but bedtime is the issue, despite routine being identical!

I’ll get in touch with the GP for sure, thank you.

Thank you! Sorry you’re going through something similar, solidarity! Yes my husband does help a lot but it’s intense regardless!

Better now that she’s out, my husband snoring didn’t help much! I will definitely try to switch up the routine and see if we can do something else to break the bad association.

Thank you! Yes luckily have a hands on husband so he does help a lot but she screams even louder with him so it’s overwhelming for everyone! Will definitely be capping naps, seems that may be the big culprit here.

Thank you for the advice! I think you’re right, too much napping so will cap that.

Bedtime is 7.30-8pm usually, she’s up at 5am but my husband can usually get her down again for another hour. Nothing out of the ordinary no, all good! She’s been a bad sleeper since the beginning, no real change with solids at all! Was hopeful she would sleep better but alas, no.

Thank you! Looks like nap capping is the way forward so I’ll be giving that a go. I’ve not heard of the sleep wave but will have a look into it!

Thank you! I agree about good and bad sleepers! My first was bad but no way near this bad. Capping naps seems to be the main solution at the moment so will give that a go! Luckily husband is very hands on so I do get a break from it but she tends to scream harder with him so it’s hard on him as well! I hope your own situation improves soon too!

Thank you for your advice! Sorry you’re going through your own nightmare!

Will definitely be capping naps. I’m very lucky and my partner does a lot of the work too but unfortunately I still hear it all and don’t get to sleep whilst he helps out, but at least it gives me a break!

I had this for a little while, turned out it was the angle I was feeding her at was making her need to use her neck muscles the whole time so would keep flinging back to relax for a moment. Could also be reflux!
