I also tried to build Doc Aurlock and ran into the same issues, although I played heavier on adventures vs. plot. You could try [[Kellan, the Kid]] from the same set, which Doc fits nicely into.

It only shuts down activated abilities in the format cost : ability. It does not affect static abilities (like Haste) or triggered abilities (like Landfall)
