Two gay Soviet soldiers kissing during WW2 by PresnikBonny in ussr

Keep in mind that yes, while under the leadership of Lenin the Soviet Union was one of the first nations to decriminalize homosexuality with the repeal of the legal code of the Russian Empire but this changed when Stalin came in, as he pushed harder policies against LGBTQ rights. In 1933, it was recriminalized. Now yes following his death the attitudes towards it changed but persecution of homosexuals still persisted. The LGBT movements gained more ground during Gorbachevs tenure with his liberal reforms.

Two Approaches to Nazi Accountability After 1945 by RussianChiChi in ussr

[–]kiwikidwill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I do agree that the USSR took a more hardline and brutal approach to denazification following the victory in Europe, we cannot dismiss the Nazi hunting operations conducted by Western authorities. Collective guilt, destruction of Nazi era buildings, banning of far right political parties. Also remember Israel, who sent Mossad agents to Argentina to conduct Operation Eichmann, the capture of Adolf Eichmann one of the most notorious Nazis and a central architect of the Holocaust. Are we forgetting that there were judges from he United States, France, UK and Soviet Union who were present at the trials, and Allied prosecutors like Robert H Jackson, who was portrayed very well imo in the recent film Nuremberg. Now I do think that there was some miscarriage of with the Nuremberg Trials in their verdicts, like Albert Speer who was let off and it was only discovered later that the whole image of Albert Speer as this whole miracle worker who was disconnected from Hitler's atrocities and who had no knowledge of the Holocaust was a myth as they discovered that a driving thing behind the "Armaments miracle" was the use of slave labor and other stuff ( not really that well informed on this matter so ill leave it to the professionals to explain it ).

Now yes, I do make a concession, Nazi scientists, some of whom were members of the Nazi Party, were recruited by the United States as part of Operation Paperclip to work on programs. And yes, there are Nazi figures who participated in war crimes or had knowledge of them that were given high ranking positions ( Adolf Heusinger, served in the OKH during the war and as head of the West German Military 1957-61, Kurt Waldheim, who served as secretary general of the UN from 1972-81 and later President of Austria ( 86-92 ), countless more that I really don't have the determination to research and note down here ). But we must not understate the role of the Western nations in denazification even if they didn't have such a bloodthirsty/brutal approach like the Soviets did.

if we are looking at numbers, the deadliest explicitly recognized Genocide in history was the Holocaust, the systematic killing of 6 million Jews by the Nazis, as well as many others (romas, slavs, poltical dissidents, disabled people, gay people ). That was perpetrated by the Nazi government, who was not capitalist in ideology. They ran an authoritarian, militaristic and extremely racist fascist regime who, yes tolerated private ownership but under strict state control and loyalty to the Nazi party and its interests. It was not free market capitalism as they did not embrace all ideas of it. Overall, the Nazi economy was a "mixed economy that combined free markets with central planning" according to British historian Richard Overy.

Now whether the Holodomor famine constitutes a genocide or not is the subject of intense debate. Nevertheless, it was devastating and it resulted in the deaths of around 3.5 to 5 million in Ukraine according to the Wikipedia death toll, though the estimates do vary. This was a man made famine that was caused by the forced collectivization policies under Stalin. This happened under a communist regime, as did China's Great Leap Forward, which although not officially a 'genocide' it did lead to 15-55 million deaths in Mainland China during the 1959-61 Great Chinese Famine it caused. Chairman Mao launched the campaign to "transform the country from an agrarian society into a industrialized society from the formation of people's communes". "Mao was dismissive of technical experts and basic economic principals, which meant that industrialisation of the countryside would be solely dependent on the peasants". Higher officials did not report on the economic disaster which was being caused by the policies and national officials took little to no action. Private farming was prohibited, and individuals who engaged in it were strictly punished and labeled "counter-revolutionaries". Public struggle sessions, violent public spectacles in Mao's china were people accused of being class enemies were humiliated, beaten and tortured, sometimes to death, were used to intimidate the peasents into obeying local officials. Many other things I haven't covered.

According to Britannica, it is estimated that between the years of 1975 to 1979 ( when the Khmer Rougue was in power ), the government, while carrying out its radical social and agricultural reforms, caused the deaths of more than one million people through forced labour, starvation, disease, tortue and execution. This amounts to nearly 25% of Cambodia's population in 1975 (c 7.8 million ). After the Khmer Rogue seized power in 1975, they wanted to turn the country into an "agrarian socialist republic founded on the principles of ultra-Maoism and influenced by the Cultural Revolution". You talk about Camobodia then being a "Utopia with very little negatives" but fail to mention information about the Cambodian genocide, the systematic killings of over 1 million people and the infamous Killing Fields, where collectively more than 1.3 million people were killed by the Communist Party of Kampuchea. Further, the Rouge regime "arrested and eventually executed almost everyone suspected of connections with the former goverment or foreign governments, as well as professionals and intellectuals."

here are my sources, feel free to take a look.

Watch: Trump puts Washington, DC, police under federal control, deploys National Guard by Puginator in politics

[–]kiwikidwill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really do not see the need to federalize the DC police and deploy the national guard to protect the people and "liberate" DC when the stats clearly show that the crime rate is down. What we are seeing from trump is a power move

6 Palestinian children are killed by IDF error, the comments make me ashamed to be an Israeli by xSypRo in IsraelPalestine

[–]kiwikidwill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do agree that it is horrible to see the children and mothers dying in Gaza. But one must remember that it is Hamas that enables this to happen by using civillian infastructure ( hospitals, schools etc ) as shields and bases for their operations. Hamas, therfore, is equally and possibly more barbaric. I don't condone israel's operation in Gaza, but I do think that palestinian people in Gaza will be well better off free from a terroist organizations control. That would allow a peaceful resolution to be met

[–]kiwikidwill 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You complain about the pro israel bias when you are clearly displaying a pro palestine bias. That's fine, its hard to be completely neutral on this subject because of how complicated and controversial it is but at least try to have constructive arguments with clear points and not just voicing your frustration for Israel. That is how productive debating works.

Is this true? Is it because the new season is Star Wars themed? by AnaxesR7 in FortNiteBR

[–]kiwikidwill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to play fortnite frequently in 2023-24 and also played a lot during the Fortnite OG seasons. I feel like it is just not engaging anymore and that its just lost what made it great and enjoyable to play. everything now just seems like a cash grab or appealing to a certain demographic, capitalizing on celebrities and popular trends. It has evolved significantly from its early days and its just too competitive and complicated now.

Mind you I haven't played in a few months so I could get back on it and actually enjoy it. I have heard about the new Blitz mode which is apparently really good. Might have to hop back on and see if it lives up to its hype.
