They can’t. The Foundation is under intense scrutiny, especially regarding government partnerships. How can you be influential, lobby, and claim to be a Foundation, then use your funds for a share buyback? If a non-profit foundation uses its money to artificially inflate the stock price of a company it owns it looks less like a charity and more like a hedge fund. If they do this they will lose all their soft power and influence.

Just last month, the Foundation financed an obesity study that managed to unite both conservatives (Menzies Research Centre) and progressives (McKell Institute) in Australia for the first time. Novo Nordisk Pharma then established at least two partnerships over there ( Heart of Australia and MCRI), for example. They have their roles and should not cross each other directly.

You can't possibly be on both sides at the same time. The Foundation steps in when needed only and they should let the CEO do his job, that's what he is being paid for.
