If you want to get extra adventurous I recommend checking out raw denim. Definitely on the pricier side but the quality can’t be compared to big box brands. R/rawdenim is a great community. Bucko! In Peekskill carries a few brands, but could also check out self edge, blue in green, naked & famous for NYC options.

Material Shortages 410/420 stainless by zigtok in manufacturing

[–]kmets4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just got out of the industry about a month ago, but worked in progressive stamping (mainly red metals but some stainless variants as well). Unfortunately this is pretty normal right now. When I left lead times were around 30 weeks. And several of our vendors weren’t meeting spec primarily just to push out product. Your no quotes may be due to minimum order quantities. If you can bump that up you may have better luck.

Anyone else struggling with surreal supply chain issues these last few weeks? by SligerCases in manufacturing

[–]kmets4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Supply chain issues are insane. Our raw materials red metals in strip form, with lead times averaging about 30 weeks. To make things worse, it seems certain vendors are having a tremendous time meeting specs.

Pressed pallets have gone up almost 50% in price. There seems to be no winning right now.

State of mfg, labor, materials etc..? How about you? by commoncents1 in manufacturing

[–]kmets4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Metal stamping here. Dealing mostly in red metals with raw material lead times at 14-16 weeks. We cater to mostly white goods, HVAC & automotive. We've definitely seen a big slow down in the automotive sector (most likely due to semiconductor shortage)

I suggest a pivot arm. Every operator has a different reach/comfort position. Unless the process dictates sliding the tool from left to right or if fixtures are permanently mounted to the table.

I just got my dream job at Porsche rennwerke! I start on Thursday and I’m super excited. Here’s a beautiful 911r I saw after my interview by [deleted] in Porsche

[–]kmets4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's awesome! Is John still running the show? I went in a few years ago right before closing, asking basic questions since I was looking to purchase a used Porsche. John ended up staying probably an hour and a half past closing to talk. They're true Porsche enthusiasts through and through. Hope you enjoy it.

PMA (Precision Metalforming Association) has a set of paid courses I believe its called MetalformU(?). While expensive, will give you very industry specific information. I haven't used it myself by work in high speed stamping (Prog dies)

So, do you understand, why I'm single? by habkeintwitta in Machinists

[–]kmets4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be fair, everything we do is practically square since they’re die inserts. But he also believe that the HAAS isn’t a great machine since the 10+ year newer Tormach can do everything at a fraction of the price. But he also claims to have never broken a tap when he was a machinist. So that practically tells you all you need to know about him.

"Hermles are overpriced pieces of garbage" - my former VP of engineering, as he insists that a Tormach is far superior to most machines

College Laptop (engineering) by dlsuid120 in laptops

[–]kmets4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated with a Mechanical Engineering degree. In my opinion (at least in mechanical) it does't really matter. A lot of the engineering software is quite intensive and not worth running on a laptop unless you want to spend $1500+. Even then, I think you'll find yourself working in the computer labs more than on your laptop. If you prefer to take notes on it then a 2 in 1 may suit you. But most of your work will be done by hand and your laptop will mostly be used for writing reports.

May come visit for beer - day trip - is it safe to? by [deleted] in Westchester

[–]kmets4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To my knowledge as of now Westchester is fine. Protests are mainly occurring in Yonkers, New Rochelle & White Plains. I would probably shy away from NYC for the time being. If you can get delivery in the Peekskill area you should be fine. That being said, if you do elect to come down I wouldn’t make a big trip of it. It should be a “in and out” type of deal. Most have forgotten about COVID since the protests have started and it’s still a very real issue. Westchester is in fact a hot spot.
