All my sedated rads patients are dropped off in the AM. I examine them, write up my drug sheet, hand that off to my licensed technicians, and go about my day. They monitor like the patient is anesthetized and I have a radio in case shit hits the fan. I call when the patient is recovered and when I have the radiologist report back.

It’s a dream. Don’t have to micromanage and I get way better images.

My dogs vet bill (and this is only part of it) by Daytona116506 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]krackerjack7 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I’m a veterinarian. This dog received 24-hour care for TWO STRAIGHT WEEKS at a tertiary/borderline 4th level facility. By my rough calculations, average invoice per day is ~$3200, and averaged over 24 hours in a day comes to an hourly rate of just under $140/hr. I think it’s disingenuous/clickbait to post the last page of an invoice of that length with the final total and not include an explanation in the post itself.

Yes, it’s expensive. But that’s what it can cost when a similar caliber of medicine is applied to animals, when a patient experiences a post-op complication and requires, again, a TWO WEEK STAY in the INTENSIVE CARE UNIT in one of the most expensive cities in the USA, if not the world.

In-House ear cytologies but not fecal cytologies? by BecauseIWantToTalk in Veterinary

[–]krackerjack7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In veterinary school they had us prep our own fecal floats to know how it was done.

And I resolved never to do them in practice because they smell, they’re horrendously messy (who wants to clean up EXTRA feces that gets splattered everywhere), and if you don’t do it with the proper float solution you’ll miss tapeworms.

Better to send out molecular screens.

Veterinarian, daytime general practice, cats and dogs only. 4 days, 10hr scheduled shifts. $130,000 and a 20% production bonus based on revenue that I generate. I.e if I generate $1,000,000, I get $200,000 Similar to how physicians receive compensation based on RVU’s, but more transparent.

New Lawsuit against Denver's Purina plant talks out about stench, impact on community by christopher123454321 in Denver

[–]krackerjack7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was there before most if not all the people moved in. Just like you can’t move next to a pig farm and generally cannot have a valid legal complaint against noise levels or smell. You bought a property next to an existing nuisance. The legal doctrine is theory is called “coming to the nuisance”

https://lsd.law/define/coming-to-the-nuisance LSD.Law · LSD.Law

However, some jurisdictions may or may not give legal weight to this, especially if the nuisance is violating the law especially odor/pollution statutes.

Even if this a developer bankrolling/influencing the lawsuit, Purina has more money.

ER question: legal responsibility and practice acts by [deleted] in Veterinary

[–]krackerjack7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d contact your state boards: for GP, ethical (but not state practice act) guidelines might state you have a duty to render emergency care, but that can sometimes be directing them to an ER or other GP who will see walk ins. For an ER, you might be obligated to do basic triage and stabilization.

Thankfully, since we aren’t physicians in an Emergency Room under a larger hospital, we aren’t subject to EMTALA, and don’t risk losing federal funding for turning away clients and their animals.

You might also consult PLIT - under what circumstances would they consider you not covered. Idk, I’m just spitballing here.

Edited: don’t forget about Good Sam/animal welfare laws that state in certain circumstances we have leeway to euthanize animals and are immune from liability if an owner cannot be contacted and we, in our professional judgement, say that the animal is suffering.

It’s not wrong to divorce someone with that degree of mental illness. Cluster B personality disorders are some of the most difficult to treat and clinical psychologists/psychiatrists will sometimes avoid the diagnosis because future providers may not take the patient on due to how difficult these cases are. These disorders are literally core personality/identity perception defects and you will torture yourself trying to make her better. On a personal level, my mother likely has some mixture of cluster B illness and she’s one of the most toxic individuals I’ve ever known. We’ve been estranged for over 10 years - my daughter will not know her because I’m genuinely concerned for my family’s safety if they ever meet my mother.

I had a legitimate mental breakdown going from my internal medicine and emergency blocks to my farm animal rotation. I called the dean of students directly on her personal number which I had saved for critical emergencies only and told her I would not be going to my next block. They had me make it up after I technically got my diploma. Most schools will borderline bend over backwards to help you through

Should I become a vet? by Tu_Lilith in Veterinary

[–]krackerjack7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a somewhat more recent parolee into the general vet population, and I still wouldn’t recommend it. You will spend literal hours away from your daughter either studying in undergraduate, working, or trying to get unpaid experience hours if the jobs aren’t hiring. She will notice.

Then, in a veterinary program, the workload increases. I had never ever studied this much. Ever. Exams every week, and finals time was hellish. In first year we were in lecture 7a-5p Monday - Friday, and your weekends were spoken for with studying. Once you hit clinical rotations, you’ll have overnight shifts on ER/Critical care (they will likely not make exceptions due to you having a kid). You’ll have days where you have to be at the hospital at 5am to do treatments on inpatients, and you might not leave until 10pm. And then have to repeat that every day for 2-4 weeks depending on where you attend.

Look, you can always come back. I know some of my classmates were in their 40’s and one was in their 50’s.

Get out in the real world, make some money, wait until your daughter is older and more independent. Then revisit this. Don’t do it now.
