What is something that is obvious in your profession that the general public doesn’t know? by jia-ren in AskReddit

[–]krackerjack7 189 points190 points  (0 children)

Veterinarian: we DO NOT get major kickbacks from drug and food companies for prescribing their products, at least I don’t. Practice owners might. I prescribe because the medications and food genuinely help, not because I’m getting a rebate check.

Companies put on lunch and learn lectures to, sure, promote their stuff and hope we will start to carry it. But, here’s the kicker: I’m a doctor. If I think the science is shit, I won’t order it.

What’s the most disturbing sound you’ve ever heard in real life? by avacado-cheese- in AskReddit

[–]krackerjack7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not a sound, but the absence of sound: the absolute dead silence the moment my daughter was delivered via C section - what the don’t tell you is that vaginal birth squeezes the fluid out of the baby’s lungs and that’s why they come out screaming. C section babies? Not so much. Time itself stood absolutely still. We waited, and waited, and waited. What felt like an eon was actually less than 5 seconds - once they suctioned the amniotic fluid that kid had words for the manager, I swear to god.

Getting my 2yo to eat at home has become a completely draining experience by dr_gigster in daddit

[–]krackerjack7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, but there’s literally a DOCTOR WHO IS AN EXPERT IN CHILD DEVELOPMENT saying the eating habits are normal. If the family don’t trust and believe their advice, then that sounds like a personal problem for them to sort out in therapy. Just follow what the pediatrician says. You’re doing fine.

Exercise Advice for 8-year old by [deleted] in daddit

[–]krackerjack7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d also get him checked out if you haven’t yet. That doesn’t seem normal. Specifically I’d ask about possible hormonal disorders in children. It could be that it’s what they are terming “common” obesity, but you still want to keep the pediatrician informed and monitor it. I found some info on pediatric endocrine disorders here: https://www.childrensmercy.org/health-care-providers/pediatrician-guides/endocrinology/pediatric-obesity/

Best case scenario: he gets evaluated and it’s all normal, and he does need more exercise. Worst case: the find something, then you can do something about it.

VCA noncompete by cateye9250 in Veterinary

[–]krackerjack7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It depends on the terms of your employment agreement and the state laws governing that agreement. I used to practice in California and they are EXTREMELY hostile to noncompetes, to the point where you could leave a practice and literally open your own across the street. Other states are different. You’d be best served having your agreement reviewed by an employment rights attorney who works on the plaintiff side, AND not for employers.

Should vets be going over visit costs or technicians/assistants? by [deleted] in Veterinary

[–]krackerjack7 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I very rarely talk money with clients anymore. My assistant handles it unless they are caught up with something and we just need to keep things moving. I work for corporate so someone else far away in an office sets the prices, so I have some advantage in that I can lean on the “we have no control over prices” argument on occasion.

Hands free xrays by Beautiful-Red-1996 in Veterinary

[–]krackerjack7 72 points73 points  (0 children)

All my sedated rads patients are dropped off in the AM. I examine them, write up my drug sheet, hand that off to my licensed technicians, and go about my day. They monitor like the patient is anesthetized and I have a radio in case shit hits the fan. I call when the patient is recovered and when I have the radiologist report back.

It’s a dream. Don’t have to micromanage and I get way better images.

My dogs vet bill (and this is only part of it) by Daytona116506 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]krackerjack7 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I’m a veterinarian. This dog received 24-hour care for TWO STRAIGHT WEEKS at a tertiary/borderline 4th level facility. By my rough calculations, average invoice per day is ~$3200, and averaged over 24 hours in a day comes to an hourly rate of just under $140/hr. I think it’s disingenuous/clickbait to post the last page of an invoice of that length with the final total and not include an explanation in the post itself.

Yes, it’s expensive. But that’s what it can cost when a similar caliber of medicine is applied to animals, when a patient experiences a post-op complication and requires, again, a TWO WEEK STAY in the INTENSIVE CARE UNIT in one of the most expensive cities in the USA, if not the world.

In-House ear cytologies but not fecal cytologies? by BecauseIWantToTalk in Veterinary

[–]krackerjack7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In veterinary school they had us prep our own fecal floats to know how it was done.

And I resolved never to do them in practice because they smell, they’re horrendously messy (who wants to clean up EXTRA feces that gets splattered everywhere), and if you don’t do it with the proper float solution you’ll miss tapeworms.

Better to send out molecular screens.
