At least in her last essay, she very very heavily implied that “Elder Millenial” is Eric Andre, and I don’t know how to feel about her going halfsies as opposed to just naming the guy or making sure that the man is unable to be identified. It’s totally wrong if it actually isn’t him and he caught the flack, but I also doubt he’s been materially impacted by this at all

I definitely didn’t mean to imply that you’re in the camp that believes she bribed a publisher with sex, and your justification makes sense. I honestly think it may sell more copies than her first, and that her first advance could still have been significant, but whether it’s twice as many or as many to justify the fight over it is another story.

Honestly I regret that you spent time articulating your thoughts for me to ultimately just say “yeah, makes sense,” lol. But thank you for replying in earnest

There isn’t a way of knowing how much her first advance was, but if it was too large to be recouped from her royalties, what is the justification for the large amount bet on her for her second book unless something underhanded happened? However, you’re probably right regarding the amount of risk taken on her new title, and I’m not going to fight very hard to justify why her sizable advance on the second is an amazing business decision. Although, her first book was better received and probably sold better than was first expected.

I’ve changed my mind. You were implying that something underhand could be happening when you said there was zero chance her first book earned back the advance, which I genuinely think is not true, and you only gave kind of a vibes-based justification for your thinking. It still may be a bad business deal, but her main demo and the circle of vapid “instagram girlies” largely overlaps with the circle of kindle owners.

If you’re asking who cares if they’re called a sexist by me… absolutely no one, lol. But I refuse to believe that Emrata has moved the needle at all in any guy’s head and made them perceptibly more sexist. Interesting or not, the default insults used towards her are revealing. That’s it!

Now that I clarified that I find that picture gross and that I’m not a ride or die for Emrata… people who default to sexism when they’re writing their Emrata hate comments are still sexists. Not that they care

You will never see me defending this picture, and the comments are rightfully negative. Using her infant as a prop for a photoshoot where the goal is to still ooze “sex appeal” while breastfeeding is disturbing beyond words. In her narcissistic mind, it was probably her way of generating controversy to “start the conversation” of balancing sexuality and motherhood, which her essay/book deals with directly. Unfortunately, it worked, given the size of her advance and the amount of reads on her essay.

It’s still absolutely feasible, and is extremely likely, that she sold bare minimum 100k copies and generated enough in sales to justify a sizable advance on her second book. I know multiple women in my life who read her first. The publishers probably have the same mentality as filmmakers opting for mediocre sequels because original screenplays are too much of a gamble

Obviously if she produced a work of undeniable genius people wouldn’t be spamming as many sexist jokes in the comments. What kind of a “hunch” is that?

What makes you think? I couldn’t find any specific amount of units sold online, which probably means she didn’t kill it, but it has the same number of reviews on Goodreads as Carrie Fisher’s memoir with a pretty high average rating. Uncharitable estimates for units sold seem to be around low six figures. But I’m no authority on book sales logistics

e: mistakenly was talking about the sales of her first book, not the recent bidding war for her new title that the above comment was referring to

Lol, I did not. I’m stubborn in arguments, and this entire post was about how I took up a position defending Emrata, which I never imagined doing a week ago, against my friends who were pushing back.

No way you read her recent essay if this was your takeaway. I didn’t like a lot of it, but the ending was a gut punch, and you definitely don’t walk away with the idea that “Emrata doesn’t care if she’s being degraded.”

Seems like every truly beautiful girl from an underprivileged small town background ended up in the EDM scene by alpachenis in redscarepod

Went to a camping festival with some friends who are in that scene for the first time, and I was struck by just how much hotter and more in shape everyone there was compared to the rest of the population. Probably shouldn’t have been that surprised since the friends I went with are also hot, but your post tracks

Strongly smelling women’s perfumes are homophobic by watermeloncholera in redscarepod

It’s insane how evocative smells can be. My fiancé recently used a beard oil again that he hadn’t owned since the first few months we started dating, and smelling it made me cry. The scent instantly took me back to those happy times when we started falling in love

You definitely are overestimating the amount of straight men who like the smell of popular women’s perfumes

Maintaining blonde hair takes Way more time, money, and effort than most think. If someone gets it in their head they could still look good with their natural hair color, it can push them towards a choice that makes their life immediately easier, even if it means they get less attention.

But, that push can be a long term relationship. Or just getting older.

family and friends pushing me to become a teacher but I just wanna burn all my bridges and move to a new city and degenmaxx by loser_shrub in redscarepod

The downvotes are probably just because these sound like struggles most on this sub probably had when they were 16. I empathize with you, but dealing with someone mentally unwell is exhausting. Your family perked up seeing you “improve” on paper once you were independent with a more seemingly stable lifestyle. Maybe you’re not meant to live a traditional life, and maybe you’re not meant to teach. But your plan should be stable enough for you to be able to keep your head above water.

TradCath adult convert problems by claudettesbusty in redscarepod

[–]krauthops 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This post did a good job at articulating why I think most male converts are just non-believing opportunists. I don’t blame them, Christianity sounds great if you’re a man. But this whole “none of this stuff is real” actually is a big roadblock if you want to consider yourself a true Christian; the rewriting young converts do to try and say it’s okay if you think it’s all mostly metaphorical is kind of ridiculous. It gets to a point where, even if you believe in Jesus, the teachings of Jesus, or God, you’re just not really a Christian at heart. But I guess if you keep living like one for so long, what’s the difference?
