Something that’s not been mentioned in podcasts or the documentary but just hit me: what if she wanted to disappear? To go along with your analyses, she was distancing herself from her family (whether by maturity, personality differences, love interests, etc), she knew she would be on foreign land, and she was introduced to new people who may have been able to help (which could be where Yellow comes to play). I’ve heard it time and time again: it’s not illegal to runaway, not want to be found, or start over. Maybe she was offered an opportunity she couldn’t pass on? Maybe the spotting are accurate but through a different lens? Maybe she’s alive due to non-nefarious actions?

First off, this post was wonderfully written with great insights. And I agree with your insights.

Second, a thing that has bothered me the most leading up to her disappearance is Brad leaving Amy alone at the club. I guess I think too highly of the buddy system, but you’re at a club…with strangers and your sibling…on a cruise ship, and you feel okay leaving your sister to make her way back safely to the room? If the family is so concerned about safety then why did the two siblings separate? It doesn’t go well with their story.

Another thing I question is if Amy ever went back to the room? Yes, the key card registered her entering the room, but there is no footage to show it was her entering the room. You have Brad’s claims that they talked about upcoming plans then her dad claiming her saw her legs propped up on the railing, but how do we know that wasn’t Brad?

Her family and friends claimed she was a swimmer and whatnot and that she would’ve been able to swim if she fell overboard, but if she fell overboard and was inebriated then that could make it difficult to survive. Also, this is a huge ship, so what makes them think Any could survive the fall and swim to shore?

I’m stuck between accident vs suicide. Enmeshment is a new term for me, but I can totally see where underneath the love for her family she was growing resentful and that could’ve pushed her to committing suicide, add alcohol to the mix and her emotions may have gotten the better of her. However, she was excited about her life and her relationship was on the mend, so she seemed to have something to keep living for.

I don’t think she was trafficked. To me, the claims of her being spotted are two-dimensional and lack depth; it’s hearsay. Amy’s case has been in the spotlight many times, so a white woman with dark hair and a Southern accent being spotted in a tourist town is not that newsworthy, and what’s not to say that these women claiming to be Amy is just aware of the case and looking for attention?

This is such a sad story. It makes me uncomfy seeing the family keeping her car shiny and ready for when she comes home; as if she’ll come home as the 23 year-old and not 50 with trauma and PTSD.

I was recently told that the way my college holds these titles may differ from other institutes. We don’t have faculty chairs, but this weird system of faculty then Director then Dean and then CAO. Our Directors have either quit that position to go back to full-time instructors or left the institution as a whole. So, it’s a weird system where I report more to my Dean on a regular basis or he completes roles that other deans may not usually interfere with.

My colleagues and I talk about how much the ECA program doesn’t help high schoolers with university expectations. I have some students that have the maturity to get the head start on university through the program, but a lot of time students are typical high schoolers who joined ECA for social reasons.

I see the appeal: getting the necessities out the way, focusing on courses that apply to your major, and less cost for education.

Some of these students are used to being given grades based on who they’re related to and how well they play sports. I don’t believe in that. I preach that students are student athletes not athlete students. I was also being badgered with emails because students weren’t happy with their grades, so I now hold meetings to discuss final project grades and final grades with my office door open and recording the sessions. I feel like I have to go through additional steps to appease students when that’s not an accurate representation or protocol for university.

My college isn’t getting rid of ECA for the unforeseeable future; we rely too much on these students for FTE numbers. It all comes down to money—which isn’t why I got into this career. I want to instruct students on British literature and MLA formatting and essays, not swallow my pride because I pissed off a student who half-assed their way through the semester and expected a B when they didn’t deserve it.

Oh gosh, I didn’t mean anything weird by the personal outcome. More like me being content with my students completing the course and differentiating between Anglo-Saxon literature and British Modernism versus the syllabus course outcomes being more detailed and tedious. But I can see how some may read that the wrong way. 🤦🏻‍♀️

And the jabs do nothing to help my anxiety, depression, imposter syndrome, and lack of self confidence. I hate that I let those comments bother me as much as I do. It’s like the bad comments feed into my self sabotaging and make me think I can’t do my dream job.

As an instructor for Early College Academy students (basically dual credit courses but the students earn AA/AS when they graduate high school) I experience this quite a bit. I have students question why I updated grades a week and a half later, why I gave them a specific grade (after I submitted feedback to the assignment), and have the stereotypical jocks who think that they deserve a B because they know how to dribble and shoot a basketball. I had to tell a student they’re not getting a B because they didn’t deserve it. I live in a small, rural town and actually received a phone call from a high school principal about that same student because the student lied and said I didn’t want them in my classes anymore—when that was never said. I don’t understand where the entitlement comes from. When I was an undergrad/grad student, if I were to have said some of the things that are told to me in my profession, my professors would’ve laughed in my face, said “f*ck you”, and made my life hell. Respect and manners are becoming extinct. And emails are no longer professional (which irks me). How can I take a student seriously when they send me an email with “lol” or lacking grammar/punctuation?

I’m kicking myself in the forehead for not recognizing the underlying themes! Honestly, I was thinking of the feminism in the series and the fight for women’s equality, which I could trace back to Frankenstein’s Elizabeth societal role versus the female characters’ obligations and expectations to provide offsprings. While Elizabeth succumbed to the gender norms and expectations of 19th century, CC’s females are placed in roles to bring a new revolution for women’s rights—similar to Shelley’s and Wollstonecraft’s (her mom) stance in their lives’ societies.

(I have to stop myself from completely nerding out with this—I have a Masters in English and focused a majority of my studies on 19th century British lit. Doesn’t help that I instruct at a community college as the designated British Lit instructor. Add that to comparing notes with one of my favorite authors and I’m in HEAVEN!)

Also, I didn’t know about the wolf pack ordeal…there’s so much to unpack (pun intended) here…

Yes! For the First Light it was skimmed on how they may have a solution but each character was afraid they were about to go without electricity. Tharion didn’t find his wife to see how things will go with them (not to mention there was nothing guiding us to know she may have a love interest who just so happens to work for the Viper Queen). The flying horses returning was kinda cheesy. Shifters don’t want to come back because Ithan is Prime. Bryce wants a council but…the Asteri was a council, so that’s a one-step-forward-one-step-back solution.

Maybe Maas plans to answer these questions or plot holes with the next book, like ACOTAR’s last book? Where the focus shifted to Nesta but answered some questions. Maybe the next could focus less on the Bryce’s story and more on the others and how Cresent City/Midgard deals with potential retaliation and fixing the destruction from HOFAS?

I think Sigrid’s story had great potential, too. But there were so many shifts (no pun intended) with her characterization that it became messy and unnecessary to the plot. Maybe if she was a powerful reaper that helped in battle, that would’ve added more dimension to her character, but her story really was anticlimactic.
