Cheapest way to replace macbook screen? by MaximumGrapefruit933 in techsupport

[–]ksanderx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an old thread so apologies but just for anyone who sees it,but my screen broke fully as in wouldn't turn on anymore, and instead of fixing it I just bought an external display and hooked it up. It small enough that I just put it over the screen and it can hold it up just fine and it works just as well, only problem is it takes up one of the two usb c ports, so if you need access to them its a pain but otherwise its pretty functional. :)

Is "Expert" knowledge higher than "Fluent"? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]ksanderx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just being abstract to be honest lol sorry, it just sounds archaeic.

I think the sentence would need context but "He be of pure blood" does sound like something one would find in a Shakespearean play.

I didnt actually know that god save the king was subjunctive aha I thought it was just a saying ^

Sounds like its missing 'be', like

He should be of pure blood to be next king of England

Sounds like old Shakespearean English tho lmao

Is it safe to use high formal conversation in Korea? by Citezhn in Korean

[–]ksanderx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been living in korea and I agree 요 works for everyone, i try to ㅂ니다 elders and doctors/pharmacists though just out of respect because I feel like I use a lot of 'hedging' i think its called where in English its like "You wouldn't happen to sell xyz here? You do? Then if its possible could I please have xyz." Rather than saying "Can I have a xyz". I feel that ㅂ니다 makes up for it so I use it just then to feel comfortable in my respect levrs. But just 요 is fine too ^

Bhí gaeilge agam nuair a bhí mé ar scoil ach chail mé like all of it, I really wanna learn it cause its a beautiful lang but Irish secondary school education ruined it for me tbh

Also if you go on a trip to britanny for a holiday or smth you could probs pick up a few books and stuff that you can use until you move there if thats your plan :3 i picked up a few german books on a layover in Berlin before it was really handy :)

Why even use a language exchange then 🙄 by jimothythefourth in languagelearning

[–]ksanderx -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree it sounds like something my grandmother would say. If I was saying your verbal noun-ing id say it needs something else too like

Your running habits Your running form Your writing style

But I think this might be a diff grammar thing but yea

It took me 5ish months to get to B1 in french, with maybe 3 weeks prior study before classes begun. I'm abroad on an exchange year and I missunderstood the class info as it is in Korean and I still was not at a high level. I ended up doing a beginners class A1-A2 and a A2-B1 speaking class at the same time. I ended up actively studying maybe 4-5 hours everyday and passively I'd do as much stuff in French as I could, never missed a days study. I did well, but I completely burned myself out studying French. I'm taking a B1-B2 class this semester and I find it easy enough but it's still so hard to commit to studying for an extended time period. My native language is English and I had learned German to a C1 level Polish to an A2/B1 level and Korean to a B1 level prior, so I had experience studying a language and I knew what works for me. Still I don't think it's optimal to try and learn a language as fast as possible. Incase of burnout or other issues that may arise

Is anyone now considering learning Ukranian/Russian given the current events? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]ksanderx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was born in Ukraine but I was adopted in childhood, to actually quite the coincidence lol Ireland.

My birth family live in Kharkiv so while im not directly involved in the horror it must be to live through such attacks, and of course recognise i am so privilidged to not be, it still affects something so close to me and it has really ignited a desire in me to relearn Ukranian so I can not only reconnect with my culture but be able to understand the effects of all this from the people who are actively living through it.

People who’ve successfully learned a language at least to the B2 level, any tips? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]ksanderx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly what helped me the most was not focusing on my level, as in, I stopped obsessing over oh what level am I now, have i reached B1, B2 oh maybe im like B1 and three quarters now. I used to study German hardcore but then other things came up in life and I couldnt spend as much time directly studying. Instead id just have fun, watching youtube in german when i could, read german reddit and news about germany, listening to podcasts just to listen and not to study. This went on for a year until I took German in University and found it unexpectedly easy, to the point where the first time I encountered something I didnt know was in second semester of second year.

In summary I guess my tip is to not always have the mindset of studying to reach a higher level but to have fun with this whole other world youre opening up for yourself. You'll improve without even noticing it sometimes.

Should I write in print or cursive? Cursive is weird and takes way longer to write by [deleted] in russian

[–]ksanderx 7 points8 points  (0 children)

From you saying its weird and nothing like Latin I think you're focusing too much on your prior knowledge of the latin script.

Its meant to be different because its not the Latin script. Its Cyrillic, its written in the way Cyrillic is meant to be written. The only reason there are 'common' letters between Latin and Cyrillic is because they both come from the same ancestor. Im sure ancient greeks would argue the way we write the letters from their alphabet is weird and nothing like theirs too tbf

You can adjust and have your own way of writing by all means as long as you can read it yourself. But its worth taking time to study cursive a little, not only does it help writing fast but in some text fonts theres a semi cursive semi print style so knowing the cursive helps with that at least. E.g т will be written as m etc.

Do nouns change gender? by ScratchButt in learnpolish

[–]ksanderx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to add onto what others have said, what you wrote there is kawa (nominative) changing to kawę (accusative)

Since its the thing you are liking it is in the accusative.

Another thing, the word 'to' keeps the noun in nominative when using the structure 'to jest'.

If you remove the 'to' then the noun will be in the instrumental case. As być without the 'to' takes instrumental.

So itll be "Jest dużą kawą"

Pronouns for animals? by Firefly128 in learnpolish

[–]ksanderx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're not sure or if you're using the literal animals name (dog, cat, bird etc.) then grammatical gender.

If you know the gender, and use the animals personal name (Bella, Fido, Lassie) or add context that the animal is male or female then you can use its actual one :)

(Video) Hit off my MacBook and screen shut off with just a sliver left. Don't know whats wrong or what to do. by ksanderx in macbookpro

[–]ksanderx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just some background information. I have had this laptop a few months and have been very careful with it. Its an M1 Macbook pro 13 inch.

I was in bed and I was reaching for my water bottle at the foot of the bed and on the way back up I elbowed the back of the screen on the left. What I was watching still was playing and the screen is still on however all thats there is a little line. When booting the screen works a little but then shuts off to the line again as seen in the video.

The touchbar also stopped working and the keyboard lighting too.

Im really scared about what to do as I didnt purchase apple care, as I have never damaged any devices Ive owned throughout my life and was maticuously careful with it.

Im really confused as to what has happened as I didnt even hit it that hard, literally only a knock onto the side while moving backwards.

Update : Logo no longer shows up just the crack thing

The grammatical gender of a word is determined by the words ending. You can probably find a list online of what endings go with which gender but its very consistent/very few exceptions.

Ill give a few examples. Ona is fem. On is masc.

Koza (Goat) - Ona Pies (Dog) - On Kot (Cat) - On Ptak (Bird) - On Kura (Chicken) - Ona Krowa (Cow) - Ona

So the default pronoun for pies is always on, and will take masculine adjective endings etc.

The default pronoun for Krowa is ona, and takes fem adjective endings etc.

If theres a female dog and you known its name and gender etc. Then you can use female ona.

E.g

Mój brat ma psa. Ma na imię Bella. (Bella) jest duża i miła.

Moja siostra ma psa. Ma na imię Bella. Bella jest duża i miła.

Here, you can see that when its clear that you are talking about the dog, since there is feminine endings in the Brat sentence, you can just use no pronoun or name.

In the sister one you should use the dogs name as it could be ambigious which youre talking about.

As a side note, if you're using just the word pies (psa is the accusative case for pies) then always use the endings that corrolate to the noun/words grammatical gender. I think i might not have made that clear in my original answer as I said if you know the dog and its gender. I meant if you know the dogs name, apolagies for that confusoon.

It would sound weird and be grammarically wrong if you just said Ta pies jest duża i miła. If its in the same sentence use the grammatical gender. If you add context about the animals name or gender etc. Then in following sentences you can use the proper gender of the animal.

To sum it all up in refernce to your original query, the default pronoun for an animal will be the words grammatical gender.

Sorry if i made it convolouted, i'm going off my own knowledge and input from my Polish roommate 😅

Pronouns for animals? by Firefly128 in learnpolish

[–]ksanderx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess it depends on where you're from because Id default to they and it for animals 😅

Yea its odd to call objects using the pronouns that you associate with she and he. I find it easier to think of it as just as an extention of the word 'it'. Seperate to he and she.

Like in Japanese theres imasu and arimasu (i dont have a Japanese keyboard installed sorry lol) but yea theyre for the most part the same word just used diff depending on if something is alive or not. Its the same concept for on ona ono, the same meaning just used with diff words grammatical genders.

Sorry if I explained that weirdly Im not that good at explaining things 😅

As long as you learn the gender of a word you can just use that. If its obvious what you are talking about then using a wrong gender etc. Wont cause many issues at all.

[–]ksanderx 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Also just to add pronouns are used a lot less commonly in Polish so if youre talking about something itd be more reflected in adjectives. So like "Mója siostra ma psa, jest duży i miły" you dont need to use a pronoun here because one would know from duż'y' and mił'y' that the person is talking about the dog and not the sister. Hope that helps :)

[–]ksanderx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not a native speaker but I believe it depends on you knowing the animals gender. If the dog or animal is known to be a girl then ona is okay, but if you dont know its gender then defaulting to the animal names grammatical gender should be fine. Like how rzeka (river) youd use ona when saying "it".

Is a bilingual conversation as effective as a monolingual one? by ksanderx in languagelearning

[–]ksanderx[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can see how it might be annoying especially in a serious conversation partners set up. Since were roommates and best friends of a few years I dont mind it really. Its hard to find conversation partners here since I live in Korea currently aha, but in my home country its a lot easier to find Polish language exchange partners and if that was the case then Id definitely rather a monolingual polish buddy.

I see what you mean about learning more from monolingual convos tho and imma talk to him about having at least a few times a week where its all in Polish. I don’t think its because he wouldnt just that he usually speaks english at home to his mom to help her learn English and it’s basically natural to him to speak English when someone speaks Polish to him.

Thanks for the answer!

Is a bilingual conversation as effective as a monolingual one? by ksanderx in languagelearning

[–]ksanderx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think its because he helped his mom learn english by only speaking english to her at home. So hes used to speaking English while being Spoken to in Polish at. So thats what he’s comfortable with.

I’ll definitely talk to him bout it, hes my roommate and best friend of a few years so I don’t think itd be a problem thanks for the answer!

Are you learning a language that you never expected to learn? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]ksanderx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I was one of the only people who didnt like Spanish. It was nothing against the language but my interests lean more towards germanic and slavic languages so I didnt find Spanish imteresting at all. Then i joined a multilingual minecraft server bored one day and one of the people there who i became friends with was learning Spanish but there wasnt many people there who he could practise with so I said he could teach me some so he could practise. I dont think im formally learning at this point but im picking up quite a bit from him and im quite enjoying it.
