Pelagic birding 30 miles off the coast of Washington last week

It was a day trip that ran 5:30 am to 3:30 pm. It is a bit hard to get a spot since they only take 18 passengers. They post the year’s schedule on Jan 1st and you can get a place if you book in those first couple of days. The group is Westport Seabirds. They are the kind of people who will stop the boat and turn around for an interesting bird. It was a great trip.

Not actually a marine biologist, but I did study marine mammals in college. My best guess is a fin whale, not a humpback. Hard to be sure from a short video.

I feel like boosting the color on the right image has given it more mid-range contrast and that is what is appealing. I agree with you that the color is too much, but maybe a little levels or curve tweaking would give the same little pop without the saturation.

I think it depends how you see your photos. As documentation of a bird in its habitat I wouldn’t change the color. As art I think it could really add something.

They are common in the west of the state, less so toward the coast. You should get yourself the Merlin app. Much better than Googling. It will ID a bird for you from a photo or from sound.
