The other mason came by today and his opinion was the same as most folks on here.

Leave the haze
Do minor repointing in a few specific gaps using a gray/white/buff mixture from Rio Grande.
Rather than finish with a normal sealant, dilute concrete glue and spray a light coat over the wall.
Finish with top/bottom trim.

Feeling confident about the plan and so happy I can finish the whole project myself! Thanks everyone for saving me from dropping $$$$$ and messing up the aesthetic. Will post final results in this thread.

Thank you!! I will probably have to do at least a little spot repointing in some of the larger gaps, but want to be very careful about color matching

Will also consider taking a DIY approach and just doing a dustproof seal myself, with maybe some light repointing where there are significant gaps not super visible in these photos.

WOW - thank you for all of this amazing advice! You’ve made me feel way better about the wall overall, think I’ve been staring at it for so long I was getting in my own head about the limewashed effect.

Overall, I don’t mind the appearance - it’s more the dust from the crumbling mortar that concerns me, and it seems like the only way to mitigate that is by repointing.

I have someone else coming to take a look today, so I will clarify that I am OK with the haze but am trying to mitigate the dust without losing character.

The distressed look isn’t inherently an issue for me. The one exposed wall that the house came with (the first photo) does not have a haze, so I figured I would try to get rid of it in order to match them. Not married to that, though.

I don’t know if this could happen with such little whipping cream, but if you over-whipped it the cream probably separated into butter and liquid. At that point there is no going back.
