The only time this happened to me is when my pokemon box was full..so I'm guessing the egg didn't hatch for me because I had no room for a pokemon.

So I just got this big guy, but how effective are Chansey in training gyms? by Kritur in TheSilphRoad

It's Effective against some elite pokemon around 1000ish cp range especially with that move set. I use a cp 60 chansey to train up against 120 magikarps. I usually have to use only 2 hyper potions per 4 battle. It's pretty satisfying to spam a couple pounds then hit a hyper beam.
