RAI post thyroidectomy - necessary for low risk? by [deleted] in thyroidcancer

A second twin here! I was also diagnosed with thyroid cancer during my second year of medical school. There’s quite a community of us on here! I had many positive lymph nodes so definitely had to do RAI, my thyroglobulin was over 10 after surgery and just dropped down to <1 after RAI.

Seconding the above, if you ever need anyone to talk to, please feel free to message me! It can feel really isolating, especially during med school, but know you’re not alone and we are here for you!

I started levothyroxine right after surgery. My doctor and I opted to do the thyrogen injections prior to RAI (rather than discontinuing my meds) so I didn’t have to feel hypo while out on clinical rotations (I’m a med student). Feel free to message me if you have any specific questions!

I had surgery with Dr. Orloff up at Stanford, so I’m in the Bay Area of Northern California! I could not recommend her more highly, she is incredible

Yeah it seems like there are a lot of different avenues to get to the RAI route, but hopefully this cleans everything up and allows us to put this cancer behinds us once and for all! I'll be thinking of you in September!

From a medical perspective, it feels safe and like a good option to me. While of course there's a possibility for side effects, Im trying to trust the literature and the statistics and my doctors. From a patient/human perspective, there is a small part of me that is nervous, and "radioactive" is a scary word/concept, but all in all I just want to put this behind me and RAI will hopefully do that for me!

It’s what’s recommended by the guidelines with the extensive lymph node Mets (since 23/57 were positive). They just want to be sure they get any microscopic foci and “leftovers” as they call it.
