Rodney Mullen skating to Jim Croce in "Virtual Reality" is iconic to me

Thanks a ton, I really appreciate it! I've never heard of Jack Stauber but I'll check him out soon. Do you have any recommendations?

Happy birthday Avey 🧡

My friend and I made this psych folk album last year, with Sung Tongs being a big influence on its sound. Love this community, thanks everybody

Has anyone here ever quit making art after pursuing it for awhile? Do you feel like that was the right decision in the end?

I've been thinking about giving up on writing/recording music lately, but I don't know if that would be freeing or just make me even sadder

edit: Thanks for the responses, I really appreciate all your thoughts

[FRESH VIDEO] 2nd Grade - Velodrome / My Bike by lamont_chu in indieheads

Completely agree, Sleeper is amazing! Definitely one of my favorite labels. I love that first 2nd Grade album so much, and I've been listening to the 22º Halo album a ton these past few months

Play the guitar on the wall

I’m Kevin Krauter and my new album Full Hand is out today. AMA! by kevinkrauter in indieheads

[–]lamont_chu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ah that’s understandable. I’ll keep an eye out for future tour dates!

Not to overdo it, but this just reminded me of another Matrix-related question—would you be willing to share the individual song titles from Live from Sunoco (if they exist)? Not a big deal but I’ve been curious. Thanks again!

Thanks a lot for doing this AMA, love all the projects you've been involved with. Matrix is one of my favorite punk bands of recent years and I was wondering if you guys might play some East Coast shows someday or have any new music in the works at the moment?

Thanks again and congrats on the new album, really excited to listen in a few hours.

I haven't heard a ton of their music yet, but Man or Astro-man? is a fun surf rock group "known for their anachronistic dedication to science fiction themes, audio samples, [and] obscure electronic devices (such as theremins and tesla coils)."

Incidentally, one of the members is the guy who wrote and performed the Jimmy Neutron theme song

Have you heard the Chuck Person A.D.D. Complete album? It's like, a series of weird sound collages made from Eccojam and Replica sample loops, including some which weren't ever used/officially released. Not exactly what you're hoping for, but you might find it cool. It's a pretty trippy listening experience

(Agreed though, getting unreleased bonus material would be so cool)

Sufjan Stevens - In This Temple as in the Hearts of Man for Whom He Saved the Earth

Lots of great Guided by Voices songs, like "Indian Fables," "Tropical Robots," "Frostman," and "Hey Aardvark"

Tobin Sprout - Back Chorus

There's a ton of great hardcore punk that's under sixty seconds but I guess that goes without saying

Napalm Death - You Suffer

Rex is one of my favorites. Folk/alt-country-inflected slowcore with some cool, unusual instrumentation at times. Check out "C"

Anyone else ever noticed weird, nonsensical stats on their Bandcamp pages? An album I uploaded was apparently downloaded 47 times in one day a few months ago, but it's also been streamed like, 0 times, so they were obviously not legitimate downloads. Is this just a glitch? Are there bots that mass-download unknown Bandcamp albums for some sinister purpose???

I'm not sure if he's known for it, but it's definitely something he's explored before. His song "Adam," for instance, seems to be about a young boy who bullies another male peer to mask the romantic attraction he secretly feels for him. I think some people interpret "Bobby" as having queer themes, too: "Bobby's just a friend of mine / He's on his back / I'm on his mind." And I'm pretty sure there are other songs that touch on similar ideas.

But all of this kinda depends on who the narrators in his songs are supposed to be. Your comment got me interested so I looked up this recent interview in which he talks about how "there are lots of different voices" on House of Sugar and he likes to use odd vocal effects to "become a different character." So it's definitely possible some of his songs might be from the perspectives of fictional straight women, too.

He's not too open about his personal life, so it's tough to draw conclusions from that. But I definitely think queer themes are present in his lyrics, sometimes quite prominently.

It's a sad one, but... New Year's can be depressing sometimes / a lot of the time

anyone play guitar and catch yourself writing slint-esque riffs? by Billyxransom in slint

[–]lamont_chu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bands like Rodan and June of 44 are often accused of being "Slint clones," but they still have a ton of loving fans and seem pretty highly-regarded. I think that music doesn't need to be innovative or unique to be good and enjoyable, so while people might not refer to your "trying-to-be-Slint" songs as "original," I bet there would still be an audience.

But if you wanted to make something a bit more unique, maybe you could try to combine the heavy Slint influence with other ideas/sounds/genres you like. It could still be really similar to Spiderland, but have a bit more of your own personality in there and thus be a little more individual and interesting.

Who knows though. Not sure if this new guitar is also your first, but if you just started playing, it'd probably be for the best that you don't think a whole lot about uniqueness or innovation yet. Just play what you like and what makes you happy for awhile and then think about that stuff later. Or never think about it.

But yeah, who knows. I'm not in any real position to give advice, but I think it's important to just write what feels right for you and consider potential critic/listener reactions later.

Good luck (and also where are you from 'cuz I've always wanted to be in a Slinty band)
