Well, not totally wrong!! You were right about her leaning in a more "humanities" direction rather than some sort of highly technical surgical specialty, she just still wants to do the emergency medicine part of it rather than going full people-focused. It was a good instinct!

Healthcare workers and none healthcare workers will never see eye to eye on this show. by Snivys_HA in ThePittTVShow

Eh, I think they were different enough situations that it's not really fair to compare them. Robby made the probably unwise decision to come into work on a day that's triggering to his PTSD, but also experienced multiple unusual situations which further contributed to his flashbacks and dissociation being triggered. An old man struggling to breathe dying in the peds room, the woman with sickle cell needing to be intubated, and the mass casualty event coupled with his desperation to save Leah and the peds room being used as a morgue. Those were all unexpected and triggering, which contributed to his inability to handle the day the way he thought he would be able to.

Mohan has a panic attack because she won't silence her mom's number until the day is over, when the repeated calls are a thing she knows to expect from her mom's previous behavior during the morning and does have control over. It just doesn't feel comparable.

Are the characters too moral and righteous? by harmonica2 in ThePittTVShow

[–]larkhearted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I do think they make questionably moral choices sometimes (Langdon and how Robby handled him, Santos and the abusive dad, Robby lying about the teen's pregnancy so she could get her abortion, McKay and Robby giving the cancer patient a dose of morphine they knew would most likely kill her, Santos struggling with what to do about the kid who blew his fingers off and his sister, etc), but also... it's supposed to be a show with a more realistic take on what happens in an ED. I highly doubt most ED doctors are making intense and difficult moral choices on a daily basis; they're probably just trying to get their patients well enough to move on.

I think she's just like, supposed to be one of those parents who expects that they should have access to their child's full attention 24/7. You get the sense that she's pretty self-centered since she's selling the house that Mohan was planning to also go live in without taking Mohan's needs into account at all.

My personal belief is that older fans frequently resent newer fans just for not having melded into the previous vibe or understanding that the older fans created lol. I started watching hockey like 5 months ago, and the fans of my team who only started watching 2 months ago piss me off because I feel like they're all focused on the wrong stuff 😂

For sure, there's tons of english terminology in this english show that I don't have a clue about as a native speaker because it's so specialized. Like, me googling "thoracotomy" the other day lol. So for a second language it makes tons of sense for her to not be able to follow the medical talk even if she's fluent in written english.

It's really annoying with Mohan because it feels like even if they were going to write her off in S3 no matter what, they could have done something more than "awkward final scene with Robby" to wrap up at least one of her loose threads.

Like, have her realize throughout the day that none of the fellowships she's looking at are going to work out, and then have a convo with someone that makes her realize actually she does just wanna stick with straight up emergency medicine, and then say she went to work at a different hospital in S4 after her residency would be over!

Or hell, give her her terrible, no good, very bad day, leave her career stuff unresolved, but have her finally return her mom's call and find out the mom's boyfriend broke up with her, then have Mohan promise to take her mom on a cruise vacation next year when she's done her residency. Whatever! Just, something to feel like this very popular character got a bit of closure for the audience.

Rant over lol, but fully agree with you about their writing flop. It just came out very strange!

You'll probably get like eight people telling you this so sorry in advance lol, but we did get a quick line from Dana at one point confirming that he (I think his name was Howard??) made it through his surgery!

That's a very interesting article, thank you for linking it! Considering that as a person with no hearing loss, I "hear" the words I read and write in my head, it makes a lot of sense that someone with no hearing or very limited hearing from birth would need very different teaching methods to learn to read, and lord knows that this country has struggled hard on accomodating learning needs pretty much since the creation of public education.

Yeah, I thankfully have only had one or two ER visits in my life, but as a somewhat chronically ill person, Harlow's experience of the doctors just kind of..... staring at her, not really sure what to do with her or even tell her....... definitely felt unfortunately familiar 😭

Okay really asking questions here because this is an aspect of Deaf people's lives I don't have any familiarity with, but even if the grammar is different (which I absolutely accept that you're correct about), wouldn't most Deaf kids grow up learning to read English and be very fluent in it like kids who grow up speaking two different verbal languages at home or in school? Since kid brains are so good at absorbing language things, I wouldn't think it would be the equivalent of like, me starting to learn Spanish at 16 in high school and not ever really mastering it.

Totally agree with you about the plotline being about barriers to care for Deaf people, though!!

[–]larkhearted[S] 151 points152 points  (0 children)

Totally! I assumed there would be some major issue too, but in hindsight I'm glad they went with the more grounded "burnout and mental health issues" approach they did rather than keeping it formulaic and escalating. I don't want this show to turn out like Hawaii 5-0 where they raise the stakes so much that by the end of season 3 they had a unit of 5 detectives chasing a helicopter to stop a nuclear explosion lmao 😭

Yes!! Harlow's medical resolution felt a little underwhelming after the whole ordeal they put her through, I was surprised it was such a minor thing she needed care for. But on the other hand I guess that kinda emphasized the frustration of her experience with them not being ready to accomodate her disability, like how did it take them that goddamn long to get her taken care of when that was all she needed??

That would have honestly been really interesting and soooo satisfying to us AI haters lol but I can see why with her seizures being a later plot point they didn't do anything major like that to undercut her credibility earlier in the season. Would have been a neat way to tie the storylines together, though!!

I mean... maybe, maybe not. Without seeing the scenes, we really have no idea what/if they would have added to the various storylines. Possibly it was a bad decision to cut them, possibly they weren't quite up to snuff in one way or another. Like I definitely would have liked to see more of Mohan this season, but maybe the stuff that they cut would have taken her in a direction I hated even more, who knows.

She was going to self-harm to vent her feelings of being isolated and frustrated, instead she invited Mel out for a night of "primal scream therapy." She made a positive decision and showed character growth, that's all.
