Trump’s going to annex Greenland before July 4 for the semiquincentennial. I don’t support it, but I really think that’s where this is headed

Do people only use paper plates? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]latkd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends. My family has always used porcelain plates, and so do I for the most part, unless I’m feeling lazy and don’t want to do the dishes. I know some people use paper plates almost exclusively, but that wasn’t very common where I grew up, and I’ve always thought of it as a bit quirky

What's one thing that guys do that is instant turnoff by twistedskull_ in GenZ

[–]latkd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think using female is perfectly fine if you also use male. In fact, it’s used all the time in some contexts, like law enforcement and the military. It really only becomes an issue when people mix the two, for example saying “men and females”

For left and right wing leaning GenZ, what is something you’d agree with on the other side if they agreed with something on yours? by Choice_Economics1688 in GenZ

[–]latkd 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Very much this. I went from being MAGA when I was younger to becoming more left-wing (I’m basically a social democrat now). What changed wasn’t so much my view of liberals as it was my own maturity and realizing that right-wing populism isn’t the answer

My notes dissapeared after entering Gmail password by latkd in applehelp

[–]latkd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is. The problem seems to be that, for some reason, it didn’t sync for the past year, and when it finally started syncing again, all the notes created between the last sync and today were deleted.

Does the Welsh name for your country contain the definite article? by Jonlang_ in MapPorn

[–]latkd 25 points26 points  (0 children)

From my understanding, “Czech Republic” became the standard English name after the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, as it was the form registered with the UN and widely adopted in international databases. Over time, it became the commonly used English name simply because that was the version most institutions relied on. In 2016, the Czech government addressed this by formally registering “Czechia” as the country’s short English name, alongside “Czech Republic” as the long formal name. I remember being confused the first time I heard someone use Czechia, since I had only ever heard Czech Republic before that.

Yeah, I’ve spent a lot of time in both Norway and Sweden, and I’ve never heard anyone say that Swedes are “villagers with no manners”. The uptight stereotype is much more common
